Surveillance vehicles, I'd guess. Look out for the footprints of removed switches in cunning places for the goodies.

According to an article in the Driving section of today's Sunday Times people who drive white cars are overwhelmingly from the 'lower social orders, low paid and probably on benefits'. Red car drivers are nearly as bad but are redeemed because red is coming back into fashion, whereas white is the pits; unless the car is in Japan where white cars are popular because it is believed the occupants are shielded from evil spirits. I shall try to remember and tip my forelock to all you superior types in your black and silver velocipides; or perhaps not. I must admit to enjoying reading some of these moronic survey results, quite entertaining sometimes. There was one recently that came to the conclusion that people with surnames containing two syllables were considered more trustworthy than than those with only one, or three: like the late Mr Maxwell then?

Apart from a red Jaguar SJ12 and a blue and silver Rover 3.5 Coupe I have always gone for white cars but as I come from good Suffolk peasant stock that is probably not surprising. I seem to be going on a bit. Merry Christmas.

Hi

I have a 1989 Mk2 Golf 1272cc with 71k miles. Generally speaking it is in immaculate condition but two things are really beginning to bug me about this car.

Firstly - when starting off in first gear there is a slight rattle / clunking sound that comes from the engine bay area. The noise only lasts a second or two until the clutch is fully released and the car is moving. The noise is also noticeably worse when the clutch is under more strain (such as hill starts or full passenger loads). One thing I can't understand is that if I slightly ride the clutch when starting off and give the car plenty of revs the noise is almost non-existant. Of course, I don't fancy destroying my clutch and would like to fix this problem asap.

My other problem is that when the car is idling, a very faint 'worn bearing' sound is noticeable from behind the dashboard. The noise disappears when I depress the clutch. Is this the start of end of my gearbox??!!

Any help to at least point me in the right direction of diagonsis of these problems would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

Hi all, can any1 help me? I have a rover 111i. I know its going to need to go to the car park in the sky soon, but I really can't afford another before xmas. The problem is its misfiring terribly, it really sounds like the exhaust is blowing (its not, just replaced in April) it has no go at all. I bought new plugs and leads last week, its no better. My friend has exactly the same car which she's scrapped as the head gasket has gone and she said I can help myself to anything, so I've just been round there and changed the distributor cap (couldn't get the rotor arm off) still no better and changed the coil. Its drinking petrol like no tomorrow. I got 180 miles out of £30 which is terrible for my car, I normally get 80+ out of £10.
Can any1 help? I only use it for work (thankfully) which is a 6 mile round trip, but I need it.
Thanks Read more

Thanks. I'm not using it until Thursday now, but when I go to work I'll thrash it in 1st and 2nd and see what happens.

Having just read HJ's test of the new Civic, why are Honda switching from a traditional auto box - a clutchless manual?
As the owner of a '97 Civic auto which I am more than happy with, I just want to select Drive & not worry about anything else.
I also notice on the new Yaris that Toyota have dropped the 4 speed auto version & replaced it with an MMT transmission.
Is this the way all manufacturers will be going?
I hope not, because aside from a traditional 4 speed auto box on cars like the above, the only other new gearbox that has had positive write-ups is the VW/Audi DSG box.

As a matter of interest, how does the VAG DSG gearbox compare with a tradtional auto box for production costs?

The Astra is complaing from the clutch pedal. Nasty juddery noices=new clutch.
It´s a 1.8 16v on a ´v´, any idea how much a replacement unit is going to cost me? Just so I know how much to take off from my budget for the wife´s Christmas present.

Hugo, I´ll be getting a garage to do it. I just wanted a rough estimate of how much it *might* be, so noone takes me for a ride. Thanks!

I may have missed something somewhere but I can't find any mention of the TDCi CVT versions on the Ford UK site. Anyone know why this would be? Read more

1, hi bit of advice needed really, i want to get myself a classic to restore have my eye on either a datsun 240z/260z, a triumph gt6 or a late 80's 911 only problem i have is in where to find these cars that are need of restoration? i subscribe to practical classics magazine but these cars don't come up very often and if they do they're not really in the right condition, i want one that needs a full nuts an bolt restoration form the ground up.

2, also i see alot of salvage cars about for auction and wondered how you purchase such cars as the majority are for release to motor trade only, im not qualified mechanic but am capable of fixing a car so is there anyway around this?

AN Other

I'd say Ebay was probably your best bet, apart from the owners' clubs. There are currently 3 or 4 GT6's suitable for restoration - item 4594124246 looks like a prime example.

Just don't get caught into bidding huge amounts: there are plenty of quite optimistic vendors of these type of cars! You'll struggle to sell any of the three cars you mention for what it's cost you in parts alone to put them right, never mind your own labour. Which is fine, if you view things as an enjoyable hobby. I'd say 4594124246 might well be worth £1500, but I'm less sure about the very messed about with 4594184261.

I was just going to mention the power PU.

thomp - if you do need power, make sure that you and the landlord agree a fair way of charging you the correct amount.
