Pug 405td 168000mls 1997, 99% sure my valve stem seals need replacing, every now and then i get blue smoke on start up and car sounds like its running on 3 cyl for about 5-10sec, when the car is running no problems the thing flies for a diesel anyway, recently change glow pugs helped slightly but no fix, anyway what i was going to ask has anyone changed the seals without removing cylinder head? must be a way of holding the valve up through injector hole whilst removing spring and seal? anyone?

Over the last couple of weeks the steering on my renault clio has become very lose, and I have understeer. It was mentioned at my last MOT that the steering rack will need replacing soon, so I'm assuming that's the cause.
Can anyone tell me how much this will cost to replace at a local garage? Read more
ring a few independants for a ball park figure, ive never done a 99 clio but they dont look a 30 minute job.
Right:
Old car - 1996 (N) Peugeot 406 1.9 TD LX. Metallic silver, 125k miles. No air con. Very good condition for year - belt change 10k miles ago, four new tyres (6mm on back, new on front), minor scratches and dings but nothing exceptional. Everything working. No history until 96k miles, sheaf of bills since then.
New car - 1999 (V) Peugeot 406 Rapier HDi. Metallic red, 108k miles. Air con. Good condition for year - a couple of bulbs out, one tyre needs replacing but nothing major. Minor supermarket scars. Lots of history - although not a punctiliously stamped book, the car's clearly had regular servicing.
What do you reckon to go from the top one to the bottom one? Both private sale. Read more
Hope the new car proves good. My only concern is you have swapped from a known car to an unknown - is the mileage genuine, is it mechanically sound etc; all the things you know about your own car but not about some stranger's car ?
Yes, I know that M & M is, by and larger a dire offering, but I must confess to a liking for the used car road show programs.
Usually informative & entertaining and the sight of the delectable Penny Mallory is reason enough to watch!

I hate it.
It just feels cheap and nasty, many of the cars they feature are rubbish, he priases cars for all the wrong reasons, none of the deals are really that attractive and the telephone call at the end is obviously fake.
I have a 1.8 sx Picasso 2001 "y" 16v petrol Picasso and it has the most annoying noise it is most common when cold and more noticeable when putting the throttle down the engine rattles well I say rattle its more of a rat a tat tat "sorry that?s the closest I can get it in words" it has a full service history and don?t understand why it does it doesn?t knock though and seems to get quieter the warmer the engine gets I don?t know if it is in unison with the engine turning over or if its something attached to the engine i.e. some sort of heat shield I just don?t know is there any helpful people that may b able to shed some light on this for me.

I had the same problem with my 1.8 LX. It was caused by low oil level - now topped up and the noise has disappeared!!!The garage have checked and there is no leak. It must just eat oil!

I drive abroad for about 4 months a year, mostly in western European countries and have always been a bit uneasy about not having an English translation of their Highway Code(s).
We quite rightly expect foreign drivers in Britain to abide by our rules and it seems reasonable that we should follow theirs, but how is this to be done when the rules are incomprehensible?
OK I can manage French and German, but Hungarian, Serbo-Croat or Norwegian? Up to now I have got by, basically by observing what other drivers do in what are to me strange situations, such as turning right against a red traffic light.
Does anyone know of a source of English language translations of the Highway Code for different countries and does the UK produce foreign language versions of ours?

Doing a search in www.theaa.com/index.html for "touring in Hungary" produced a pdf document giving tips for ...wait for it ..... touring in Hungary! Perhaps searching for "touring in xxxxxx" will produce similar results.

I have got a 1995 N reg SEAT 1.4i petrol that has been occaissionally cutting out but as of last week now refuses to run.
On turning the key, the engine will fire and run for about a second or two but will then die.
Engine is the 8 valve multipoint injection type (as apposed to throttle body injection)
I have tested for fuel pump operation and it runs for about a second before cutting. I believe this is normal and pump cuts out when fuel pressure is at correct pressure.
I have checked relay by bypassing relay terminals to get the pump to work continuously yet car starts, runs for a second then dies.
Have also checked for spark, and fuel flow/delivery and it all looks text book.
Car has just under a full tank with no sign (or smell) of fuel leaks etc.
Any ideas as to why it doesn't want to run?
Thanks in advance

I have a 1993 Mitsubishi shogun 3.0 v6 petrol which cuts out adhoc. If I leave the car to cool down the engine starts again. However after a couple more miles it cuts out again. My local garage cannot find the fault. Any views? Read more
Apparently the fault with these ECU's is capacitors failing due to voltage spikes (the voltage rating of the capacitors used is not adequate).
If you can find a competent electronics engineer you may find that this is repairable for a lot less than £1000.
There is also a company in Nottingham that tests and repairs these ECU's. They charge about £40 for testing:

I got a PCN for parking on a double yellow. The ticket was issued after 2 minutes. I assume this is Kosher but just wondering (hoping) if the min amount of time was more than 2 mins. Read more
Thanks for replies. It's a fair cop, I've coughed up. Case closed.
I asked this on the speeding thread, got no replies, I consider that to be because no-one reads that thread, so I'm starting this one.
Can I have the latest understood position regarding the "pace statement" defence.

This is a new one to me just read about it today, trying to help someone out.
Instead of completeng the NIP you attach a statement "not for use as evidence as I am yet to be cautioned for the offence under PACE"
How many people are doing this?
How many are being subsequently cautioned and then asked to complete NIP form - but doesn't the caution give a right to silence?
In general what's happening on this front? Read more
Many thanks for that Ashok. It seems that a bit of delaying means that either your file gets lost or the whole thing is dropped. The worst that can happen(?) is that you have to pay the fine and take the points a bit later than you expected to. Seems worth a try!

Cheers for the replies, ive carried out 2 head gasket replacements on previous 405tds, although not a difficult job i just dont have the time to do it plus its cold outside! the car isnt that difficult to start just sounds rough and with cloud of blue smoke until engine clears and runs on all cylinders, as i said earlier this isnt all the time, it doesnt burn a great deal of oil very rarely top up between changes (every 4000mls) i replaced all the leak off pipes when i replaced the glow plugs so for now i think i will leave things be or maybe have the injectors cleaned. Regards.
