My sister has just put her 2year old 1.3 Wagon R+ in against one of the latest ones, with the Vaux 1.2 multi point engine. Compared with the 1.3, this new 1.2 engine sounds like the proverbial bag of spanners.
Presume this engine is the one used in the Corsa ( perhaps not ) so is anyone aware of any issues with this engine that a new owner should be aware of and look ( or rather listen ) for?
Any info much appreciated.

I've a Passat TDI (tiptronic auto and pd engine 115hp). Has anyone out there tried chipping one of these or adding one of those units that go near to the fuel delivery system? If so, I'd be interested in what performance and economy increases you got and likely costs/insurance issues.

Thanks Read more

This has been discussed many times both in discussion and in technical. Try doing a forum search to the right hand side of the page.

As far as I can remember, several people have had theirs chipped and no one has complained. However regarding the units that go near the fuel delivery system, think the general consensus is that these are not very good?

Bikemade3's thread on the 407 has prompted me to have a wee think about how different cars are nowadays. Now he has the problem of not knowing how to open his boot or fix the self locking doors. Going back say 10-15 years, every cars boot probably worked the same way.

I don't know about you, but when I get a new car, I am so excited that, as with any purchase I make, I will immediately start to use it and only revert to handbook if all else fails.

But I shudder to think how someone would deal with my current Scenic if they didn't know how the keyless ignition worked, the auto headlights, the auto wipers, the auto handbrake etc, and that is only on a relatively middle of the road family MPV.

I rememeber for my last Scenic, after about 18 months I discovered it had self locking doors, RDS TA function on the radio and seat height adjustment! The reason I did this was I was stuck in an (engine switched off tailback) for 2 hours so decided to pass the time by reading the handbook!

Have you ever found out something you didn't know from your car handbook? How long after owning it did you discover this? Read more

I was wondering if there was more information about motorcycle parking in airports, especially as I will be visiting Stanstead very soon.,

Thanks in advance

It's free, as is bike parking at most if not all BAA sites:

Stansted Airport - Free motorcycles parking in the dedicated zones (Zone C1, and Zone D of the long stay car park). Click here for link to airport map (click on the parking then parking map button on the left-hand index)

I've cut 'n pasted this. Here's the link to the site:

Hi. I have just had a couple of new tyres fitted and noticed I have been charged £2.50 for a "nitroinflate". Presumably they have inflated the tyres with nitrogen rather than air. I am not quibbling, just interest as to why ? I would imagine nitrogen would diffuse through rubber a little quicker than air. If it is to keep oxygen out of the tyre (to reduce oxidation ?), there is plenty of oxygen on the outside anyway. Besides, when I pump them up I will just put air in. Any BRers care to enlighten me ? The inner tubes where filled with some water to add ballast, you may recall a lot of the rims were split rims to ease tyre fitting. Good times as a young lad at harvest time. I remember one young lass and a hay stack, but that another story, gone off for a shower, back later. Regards Peter

Can anyone help?
My 2000W 2.0i Zetec 3dr Focus has been misting up a lot recenly, but has always done so to a certain extent. I was horrified to find the drivers-side front and rear footwells are saturated. I can't find water running in from the tailgate, but can't find any from under the dash area either. Any clues as to common faults? (I'm struggling because it's dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home)
Thanks.

Thanks for the fast reply, DD,
Will check when I can see what I'm doing, I assumed it wasn't the problem since it's above the passenger side, which seems dry. You never know where water is going to end up though!

Seems to be a big price variation between oe and aftermarket, and also just amongst the aftermarket brands themselves. Which of these brands are rated by Backroomers please? Or, how many would opt for oe item from dealer instead from experience? I haven't bought one for ages. Read more

I bought an aftermarket exhaust (center and back box) from GSF for my 1995 520i and was very pleased with the fit and sound. Because they were designed to fit together and the car I was able to bolt the whole thing together on my drive, no need for any specialist fitting or welding.

Only put it on in Oct of last year so no idea how long it will last, but so far no complaints whatsoever.

Hi

1 - If I bought a car new (heaven forbid!) and get it serviced, as you can do these days, by a VAT registered garage, do I maintain the anti-corrosion warranty that came with the car if the garage check and top-up paintwork and underseal as per the manufacturers instructions?

2 - If my car is then involved in an accident, and I got it repaired (a new front offside wing, say) by the same non-dealer VAT registered garage, would the anti-corrosion warranty still apply to that panel? Personally I would hope not, but I have a friend who thinks it would :-)

Thanks

I have a problem with the indicators when you put on the hazzard flashers they work perfect, but when you indicate left or right the front and wing flash rapid, normal brightness but the back flash very dim, so dim that you can barely see them at all and they flash at same speed as front! Any input welcome! Read more
