...and call them "Car thieves" too.
With CMs permission could I add the words CRIMINALS, SCUMBAGS, or even KILLERS to his suggestion, and would it be appropriate for the Backroom to totally eliminate the word Joyrider from its lexicon, as it has an almost pleasant connotation....

Car would not startafter 20 mile journey
Fired up but would not pick up from 500 rpm and died after 10 secs.
ABS light flickers during process but after 1 hour and AA inspection still would not start.
AA man knew of problem via lap top but his fixes did not work indeed he has asked me to let him know what diagnosis is
When recovery truck arrived of course it started perfectly and has done so again this morning.
Taken to Mercedes dealer in ***** and of course there is now a £100 diagnostic charge. No refund if they cannot find it so if it breaks down again that will be another £100 charge probably.

Nice little earner

Vary rarely do I have to lock a thread in Technical Matters.

However, I think this thread has run it's course, and there only now appears to be a lot of accusations and insults flying about.

Help please
1990 520i with 88000 mls and full BM service history, for the last 3 months is very difficult to start first thing in the morning. 3 visits to BMW and 3 further visits to BMW specialist has failed to resolve the problem,in fact it is getting worse.
At first they said it needed a full service - no improvement, then it was a faulty ECU unit, had this replaced - it did not resolve anything, then they replaced the thermotime switch which apparently controls the cold start injector - no difference at all,and finally the filter on the fuel line (it must be partially blocked)the car has still got the original problem. They now admit that they do not know what the problem is.
It will eventually start after several attempts and smells strongly of petrol and then it is fine for restarting, throughout the day it runs well.
Somebody out there must have had this problem and know the answer I am sure it is something relatively straight forward. Help Please.

I watched this last night, having missed it Wednesday night.

Being an anorak, i spotted three things that were obviously not Russian - the Abbott SP Gun patrolling the perimeter in deepest Russia, the GB registered helicopter that transported the cadets to Krimsk, but also the bus (motoring):

The bus looked to me to be a LHD Bedford and ex RAF - put a yellow stripe down the side and a roundal, and it's the school bus i used to catch in Liege to go to the British school in the early 80's. Obviously the logo's have been removed.

By chance if there's anyone on here who was serving in Europe in the 1980's, and also happens to be watching Space Cadets, can you put my mind at rest?

On the M4 between J11 and J8/9 has anyone seen any mobile camera vans ?
I saw something yesterday on a bridge between J10 and J8/9 eastbound which looked suspicious, is this just me being paranoid, or are they using these 'highway robbery' vans on this stretch ? Read more

Hi,

Can someone tell me how often these normally need replacing? I've done 40,000 miles in my ford ka and I know that they probably need doing know as I was told at my last service they needed it in another 5k miles.

Also how much is it likely to cost to have both done?

Thanks Read more

Every 2rd or 3rd pad change the discs will need replacing too..

The discs have a minimum thickness, and once they reach this, or are heavily scored or lipped, then they need changing..

As a rough guide, I reckon an independant garage is likely to
charge £150 all inclusive to do the job..

Phone around, and get a few quotes...

Hope someone here can answer this for me.

Can I legally drive a car home from the garage where it has just passed an MOT but its listed as SORN? I know I can drive it away when the car is taxed but I'm not sure about SORN. The car is insured.

Thanks

But if you pass dozens of MOT Centres on the way
there and back, it would be somewhat surprising if it didn't
arouse suspicion if it was solely for that purpose...:-)

No, not necessarily. There might be very good reasons for prefering your local tester. He might also be an independent repairer you have trusted over many years. There is no law that says you have to use any particular tester.

I stumbled on this advert whilst looking for something completely different in relation to the Honda commercial post.

What message do you think the advertiser is trying to get across?

Buy one and you are taking a gamble maybe?

(note, it took a while to load using 1MB broadband connection. No idea of file size.)

Buy an X type and you get X ray vision so you can cheat at cards?

Looked like someone watched the Guy Ritchie film Revolver and thought, hey cool film, didn't understand it but i'll do an advert in the same style. Also a little Matrix reference in there with the Queen of hearts tattoo (follow the white rabbit).

What a rubbish ad. The Mercedes mini film with Benecio Del Toro a few years ago was much much better.

I've got a VW Golf Mark 3 and the Glove Compartment is permanantly closed i think the lock is broken, what is the best way to tackle this problem?
I dont want to be too forceful with it, just in case it becomes a bit costly to fix afterwards.

If it is the plastic handle/lever which is broken and not operating the catch, these can be replaced fairly easily. I replaced one about two years ago. Try to open the lid by inserting a screwdriver through the slot in the lever cover and pushing the lever behind, (down I think!)to release the catch. Once the lid is open there is just a cover plate and then the plastic handle and recessed front cover can be released by removal of visible screws. Replacement part from VAG about £7.50. Providing you do not damage the operating mechanism behind the handle it is a fairly simple job. Hope this is of help.

The main thing to do when you clear the mayonnaise is to clear out the pipe between the filler cap and the air filter housing. A bit of oil will help get it on again afterwards. I'd replace if badly swollen. While not attached, swill the cap through with some white spirit and shake some up with the holes covered. You'll be surprised by the amount of muck that comes out there.
