White Car Man - thallium81
According to an article in the Driving section of today's Sunday Times people who drive white cars are overwhelmingly from the 'lower social orders, low paid and probably on benefits'. Red car drivers are nearly as bad but are redeemed because red is coming back into fashion, whereas white is the pits; unless the car is in Japan where white cars are popular because it is believed the occupants are shielded from evil spirits. I shall try to remember and tip my forelock to all you superior types in your black and silver velocipides; or perhaps not. I must admit to enjoying reading some of these moronic survey results, quite entertaining sometimes. There was one recently that came to the conclusion that people with surnames containing two syllables were considered more trustworthy than than those with only one, or three: like the late Mr Maxwell then?

Apart from a red Jaguar SJ12 and a blue and silver Rover 3.5 Coupe I have always gone for white cars but as I come from good Suffolk peasant stock that is probably not surprising. I seem to be going on a bit. Merry Christmas.

A link to the document in question. Douglas Adams cracked this in the 70s, can't believe we haven't moved on as a planet as a twenty five years.

Some of us must envy motorists who can choose the perfect colour for their machines. Where do these people get the money? I know, I know, they work hard and are successful. But many find, somehow, a driveable vehicle they can afford, and just lump it where the finer aesthetics are concerned. I have had two white cars and they certainly show the dirt even worse than black ones, being particularly prone to oily fingerprints on the driver's door. I have driven several cars with a panel or so in a different colour, and at least three whose finish was completely matt. It's a long time since I kidded myself that these jalopies had the sort of rakish tattiness one used to see in fifties and early sixties competition cars (racers were often road legal in those days). No, they shout: Underclass toerag! to every respectable citizen in his or her shiny pride and joy. But no one bothers to key them or try to steal them. I used to have a very pretty Renault 18GTX estate in fairly impeccable silver with nice brown tinted windows. People couldn't help chucking paint over it and kicking in the very weak door panels. It's what passes for human nature these days.

Reminds me of an ex colleague of mine who just had to have a 5 series as his company car, he ordered the very basic 520i, had the choice of two solid colours, red or white, chose white though still had to put in a few hundred quid of his own money, we used to joke that he did weddings on a Saturday as a side line.

I had a white 306 XSi followed by a red 2 litre Focus. I'm not on benefits but I'll admit to the rest of the description!
