Took my "XXX" (3 year old car) into a XXX main dealer this week for a warranty job. The air-con was a bit smelly, and needed deodorising to remove the bacteria from the matrix.

They kept it for the day, and when I collected it on Tuesday, all seemed fine. However I happened to check what they had done this morning and discovered that the dealer had removed the cabin pollen filter and not bothered to replace it with anything.

On this particular car, the filter is fitted behind the dash, so not somewhere your average joe-punter would bother to look.

Is this an ethical practice? Surely they should have replaced the filter (either under warranty, or billed me for it)? The maintenance schedule says that it doesn't need replacing for another year or 10,000 miles, but if they'd told me it needed replacing I would happily have paid for it. The fact that they just removed it and didn't bother putting a new one in, nor did they tell me what they had done leads me to wonder whether this is ethical.

I mean, if it didn't serve a purpose, then the manufacturer wouldn't bother fitting them would they?

* XXX I've not disclosed the make or model because I don't want to prejudice any responses! I'll let the cat out of the bag (if anyone's interested) after I've had some responses. Actually - have a guess who the manufacturer is - just out of curiosity! There's a prize for the first correct answer ;-) Read more

Most parts that don't get fitted or replaced end up on ebay or used in 'weekend' jobs.

Out with the mother in law to the high street she says the shop she wants is off to the left which is good as its no right turn at the end we turn left she then says its the other way I do a U turn about 5 yards from the turning and promptly receive a fixed penalty for £50 for turning right.Should I fight it or just pay up? I am a bit confused by Boneseyboy's description.

Imagine a 'T' with B coming down the leg to the cross bar. No right turn when reaching the end and signed so. Turn left permitted which he does and then entering the leg to the left realises his mistake and does a U Turn on that road. This is not a right turn as the right leg has not been entered. No offence IMHO.

But why no right turn allowed? Could it be that the left turn road is a One Way Street and by U turning B is in contraflow? Or has he gone across the top bar into the right turn road in contravention of a No Entry.

Not sure which offence committed. A FPN will carry points for failing to conform to Traffic sign (if note on FPN that DL also required when payment made then FTC offence) or whether offence against a Traffic Order which may not carry points.

" if its got you guys talking about it - its worked"

So it appears that the purpose of an advertisement is to get people talking about the advertisement.

I wonder if Honda is aware that the millions they are spending on advertising only serves the people who create the ads and helps them win industry awards etc?.

" It is supplied to him in exchange for an enormous franchise fee"

Just like ANY franchise. Having been there and done that (not with BSM or any similar set up I hasten to add), I can only say that franchising works for some but not for many, many others.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the idea, but my god it it like feeding off a great big mothership that sucks the life out of you and leaves you with the droppings ...... a bit dramatic maybe, but you get the gist...

The AA driving school works on exactly the same basis as BSM (aka RAC) and also many other larger Schools of Motoring.

Needless to say, these parts of the motoring organisations are very profitable as there is an ever increasing demand for motoring tuition ....

Hi all,
Could someone advise me on the frequency of changing coolant/anti-freeze.
My car is filled with the recommended G12Plus which is classed as a 'filled for life' coolant. How long is 'life'? In the past I always carried out a change every 2 years as I was concerned of the anti-rust inhibitor breaking down. As I am planning on keeping the car for sometime, how frequently should I change this coolant bearing in mind cost and welfare of the car?
Many thanks. Read more

I scrapped my D reg 210k Polo (death by rust) which had the original G11 coolant which I'd occasionally topped up/orignal radiator/no leaks/no gunk in header tank/auto choke still kicking in like clockwork. Now VW sell G12+, the + part meaning you can mix it with G11. Fill (or top up) and forget.

Hi,

My wifes 2 month old Jazz has had someone conveniently open their door onto her car and leave a dent, plus some scratches, all in area of an 1-1.5 inches.

Looking around for a cheap way of fixing this and I found Chipsaway. Anyone used ChipsAway in Woking and what's your feeling on the quality of their work?

thanks in advance....

Some of you may remember I had my car written off when a tree bounced on it in September. We have just been sorting out insurance for myself and son and find, although I had no claims protection, the quotes I am getting count this as an accident which is my fault and load costs accordingly. The major insurance company were not interested in who owned the tree or any liability (although one wonders if the operators in Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi understood my concerns at the time when I offered the name of the landowner). Interesting that I am responsible for a tree falling on me on a public road while minding my own business!! Read more

I too do not understand how it can be acceptable for
insurance companies to offer "protected no-claims bonus", either for a price
or as a buying incentive, and then load your premium if
you make a claim.

Mine doesn't ~ I asked them specifically about that. If I make more than 3 claims in 3 years then my percentage discount is reduced. But that is all. Making a claim does not affect the gross premium at the next renewal. My gross premium only varies each year in line with prevailing rates.

On reading "Bovine Intervention" in the Telegraph motoring section, I had to reply to A.H.Skipton's letter. Thankyou very much for writing the letter it was quite refreshing to know that these things do happen to other people and that things can be done about it. I had my car written off after a horse broke out of its field and ran into the side of my car.My car has been replaced by my insurance company and they were very good about the whole incident. The owner of the horse has replied by saying that his horse has as much right on the public highway as anyone else, although the horse was alone at the time (03.45 am) with no one in control. It seems to be a matter of watch this space to find out what happens.

The owner of the horse would have been held liable as it was the horse which caused the accident. However, the horse-owner could, in turn, have claimed compensation from the owner of the car which crashed allowing the horse to escape.
