Hi guys,

I've recent bought a little run around for my wife, a fiesta 1.3. However it came with a Kenwood stereo in it, she's not bothered about having a CD player in here car! :| however i am! :)

I have the Stock stereo in mine (Ford Escort Flight (r)) I was wondering how easy it would be to change the two over and how i would about taking out the old Stereo, more spacifically on the Escort, if anyone can offer advice on removing the Kenwood would that would be great!

My son (18) has been offered (privately) a silver Clio Oasis 1.2, 1995N; 42,000 miles for £1195. I thought this sounded expensive for its age and it will not have a garage warranty. What do the experts here think? We have been finding it difficult to find him a car as he is tall with big feet!! this means Saxo's ,106's and similar no good - when he brakes he is still on the accelerator!, Read more

Oh, in answer to looking for bigger cars for an 18 year old boy (we did), car on drive, rural area, mother only other named driver, the following insurance quotes will explain a lot: Proton Compact Sprint, £3,000, Mondeo (smallest engine) £2,500, Astra £2.200, Clio £1,200, Internet quotes are often lower but when you try to arrange it you are asked to ring and given the 'real' quote. I would rather spend the extra £1000+ on the motor.

Hi gang - just bought some of this stuff called 'Press On Instant Spare' made by Taylor Made Products and distributed by the Greased Lightning people. Basically it says it will inflate and seal a flat tyre until it can be repaired/replaced. This appeals more for Mrs MM than me as I wouldn't want her stuck out on a dark road somewhere trying to change a wheel. Has anyone out there tried this or similar products. The can says to warn the fitter but are there any issues/considerations when using such a product? Damage to alloy wheels for example.

Cheers everyone. Read more

Dr R you are quite correct on both points. Runflats should not be retro fitted without taking account of your comments. I understand that all BMW cars are now fitted with runflats ( excluding the X3 and X5 ), where they have started others are beginning....

Researching car failures went onto this-
Open www.google.com

Type failure in search box and Click on I'm feeling Lucky.

Youll be surprised at whose description this turns up.

Anyway this was meant for those who havent heard of this here.

And discovering that George Bush appears when you type failure into google.com has what to to do with motoring?

Absolutely nothing - so locked. DD.

My mother (aged 72) wants to buy a new car next year. She has no interest at all in badges / marques. Her key criteria will be value for money (and yes she likes to get a new car because "she likes to know where it has been".) I think she is unlikely to want to spend much more than £8,500 (after discounts)

She wants 5 doors, cd player, electric windows, aircon, ideally a sunroof and low insurance & servicing costs. The car will have to be strongly built and mechanically reliable (she has kept her last car seven years and so will not change it for quite a while). She refuses to drive an automatic (there is not much point in discussing it - I have tried.......).

I think the following may be worth a punt:-

Kia Rio
Hyundai Getz (I believe this is the
Suzucki Swift

But which one and which trim.

View please - thanks

I am going with my mother tomorrow to see the Suzuki Swift 1.3Gl 5 door @ £7,899 and the Kia Rio Zapp @ £7,495. The Kia appears to me to be exceptional value for money and has air-con which the Swift does not. However I would say the Swift looks more stylish and comes equipped with better safety kit (more airbags).

Does anyone have a particular favourite out of the two?

Also my mother has a Renault Clio 1.2 5 door Grande (98 S) with 25,000 miles. What should I ask the dealer for px (£2,500?) and what should I settle for (£1,750?). My mother is too old for the Kia's free insurance (it is for 18-70). Is is worth asking for any freebies instead (mats/flaps), etc

Many thanks

Question Omega Saloon

This car has been parked up for 2 months. Battery is flat and I am not able to open the car.
I am told that if I insert the key in the door-lock and lift the handle turning the key clockwise will unlock the door.
It doesn't !

Anybody know how to open the car please ?

The driver's door occasionally used to do this on my Omega. Spray underneath the handle, into the handle mechanism, and leave for about twenty minutes.

I used to keep lifting up the handle and eventually the door would open - and I used the car every day.

AN Other

Dear all

I've just bought a Clarion CD player for my SAAB off Ebay. It's an original SAAB fit stereo, made by Clarion, model nr PU-2135C.

Of course I haven't got a code for it. Cue dealer wanting £20. Do any of you here have the software to find a code for this, in exchange for a virtual pint? I'd be ever so grateful! Read more

As a matter of principle, I would personally refuse to buy a car radio from Ebay unless there was enough evidence to suggest it hadn't been stolen. Like the radio code being available?
Although I do accept that it may be from a breakers yard or similar.

I had an air leek on the fuel flap locking mechanism, now the pump isn't working. My Haynes Manual says if the bi pressure pump unit (located right hand side of boot) runs for 35 secs (which it did) an internal control unit will automatically turn it off. Does Anybody know how to get this system back up and running properly ? Is there anyway of swithing the bi-pressure pump back on ? The relevent fuse in the engine compartment is fine by the way. Bob G

Cheers, I have had the pump in pieces, quite a simple mechanism, but no joy. It looks like a new pump is needed as it maybe burnt out when the system leaked.

When younger I used to deliver newspapers, the shop owner used to regularly draw our attention to the lighting up time displayed in the bottom corner of the front page, often near the breaking news section.

Any other posters remember this...and when did it disappear?

Just a few points, the street lights locally come on at any time during the day (until 10am then from 2pm) if the light level drops for long enough, It became light a couple of days ago, but rain came in and it grew dark and the street lights all came back on. !!

Can anyone define Serious reduced visibility ?

The only other time I would use headlights if traveling away from the sun for a long period, but this is usually the summer, same with rear fogs if travelling towards the sun.

There are a lot of accidents involving the sun as it sets in the summer when visibility is inpaired due to the angle of the sun.

Was snooping around the Manheim car auctions today(Colchester) with lots of Mercedes C and S class cars,so much so that towards the end there were absolutely fantastic cars with only 3 or 4 people present as the audience + the auctioneers and staff .ie total less than 10 present.

Pity I didnt require a Mercedes!

Another absolute bargain but without a V5 was this Toyota Avensis 05 reg 2.0 D-4D T Spirit 4d for approx 9000.

If I had known , would probably have been tempted at that one,.since I discovered later that the list price is atleast 15000!
