When i start my Saxo from cold, it makes a screeching noise (similar to what you get from a fan belt). Noise gets worse if you rev the car, but then disappears within 15 secs of starting the car and doesn't return.
Is this noise the fan belt or is there any other belts etc that would make the noise? How best can I check as the fault wouldn't be there when I take it to a garage, unless I leave it overnight with him? Read more
What exactly, if anything, do the Mercedes letters actully mean?
Was bored in a traffic jam and was wondering what CLK actully meant. C for the class and L for coupe, but why K? And why L for coupe?
And if the cars start with the A class, and soon a B class, and C and E, why is the big one S?
And why is the soft roader M?
TIA
PS, if they did a coupe based on the E class, would that be an ELK :)? Read more

Great, Thanks
What did TE and SEC mean then?
I'd be very grateful for some advice about what car to buy with a budget of £5500. I'm driving approx 20,000 motorway miles per year, so fuel economy and safety are my main requirements. Any suggestions for what to buy ? Am very tempted by the Smart Fortwo, but don't know whether it would be much fun on the motorway ????. Also like the Renault Clio dci, but realise I maybe missing some other good alternatives
Cheers for any advice

"But it means you've got to have two horribly cheap looking pads connected to your seat and plugged into the ciggy lighter which is a tad les..... efficient than just hitting a button on the centre console :p"
And at only £5 a whole of a tad less cheaper as well!Only as much as the price of a hot curry from a takeaway
-Only that this will keep you warm for a lot longer than the curry.
Looking for help.I have a seimens cdr 2005 cd player, which I presume is the factory fitted unit in a corsa sxi. However when 1st switching it on it makes a horrendous vibrating noise then plays normally. It doesnt happen every time, but when it does a good tap on the side of the unit stops it.Had it back under warranty, but yes you've guessed it, it didnt play up ,and they reported "no fault found".Can anyone advise how to remove this unit (it seems to be held in with 4 very small allen screws) but even with them removed will not budge

Had a small accident 6 weeks ago...was accelerating off an island when the car in front suddenly emergency stopped for a zebra crossing meaning i skidded and rolled into their car very softly, got out the car and there was no visible damage to either car! The other driver was furious and kept insisting they'd have their insurance check their car over, i said there was nothing to check and if there was i would prefer to pay for the damage myself as i have 5 years NCB! So we swapped names addresses mobile no.s and insurance brokers names. Heard nothing so presumed everything was ok but have now recieved a letter from my insurance saying a claim has been made against me and requesting me to fill out a claim form!!!
Wha should i do about the letter? I really want to avoid this claim! Ignore it, Deny the accident? Will my insurance company be hoping i deny it? Thanks in advance for any advice you have. Read more
Several years ago a car reversed into the side of mine at a patrol station. The other driver was happy to replace the door of my (15 year old) car with one from a scrappy. No prob. His car seemed completely undamaged. It later turned out that his tow bar had ripped from the mountings and that the car was a write off. Laugh? I nearly cried. lol.
New tyres have 8mm tread. I got about 15k miles out of my fronts before they were down to about 5mm. However less than 5k miles later they are down to 2mm.
Hence do tyres wear quicker as they lose tread depth...I think so but mate thinks I am imagining things... Read more
> Of course they do. As the diameter goes down they need to spin faster to travel the same distance!<
RF you have missed out the the fact that altho the actual distance covered per revolution decreases, the distance recorded per revolution - by the odometer, will remain constant IYKWIM!

If you get a 'missed call' number on your mobile phone that starts with 0709, just delete it. It is a premium rate number scam.
More infor at www.snopes.com/inboxer/scams/mobile.asp
I have just looked a at Mrs buzbee's mobile to see 0709 680 8503 as a missed call!
As you will read from the above link, the 0709 bit indicates a scam and those last 7 numbers can vary. Read more
Thought I recognised it.
Thanks.

Sorry if this is an old one, but I am becoming increasingly puzzled by seeing engine oil for sale bearing the legend ?SAE 0-40? (and sometimes even wider ranges starting from ?0?)
I understand that viscosity is measured in seconds of time for a specified amount to flow through a specified diameter hole, so it is easy to understand ?SAE30?. Multigrade oils quote their viscosity at two temperatures, first the low, then the high. In this case ?SAE (Society of Automobile Engineers) 10-40? means that the oil flows like an SAE10 at low temperature and an SAE 40 at high temperature. But how can oil have a low temperature rating of ?0?
There must be an explanation, but no one that I have asked knows what it is. Do any of the learned readers of The Back Room know the answer?
Thanks ??. Michael

I quite fancy a look at the Classics Auction on 29th November so if you are there and you see a porky bloke wearing a gold black and green (Northampton Saints) college style scarf come up and say 'hello let me buy you a cup of tea Thommo'.

I've only owned the car a couple of weeks and its my 1st Ford (previously had a Renault) what type of standard servicing costs would I be looking at? Either at a dealer or a local, while im on the subject can anyone recommend a good garage for servicing? I live in north manchester, crumpsall area. any help as always will be much apriechated.

Agreed and probably the local garage can do it for you
instead of the Ford dealer. >>
It has only done 40k so if under 3 years old it is well worth paying less than £150 and having a dealer do it. IMO Ford dealers are good now days, also Ford are likely to support any out of warranty claims if the car has full Ford dealer history.

Thanks guys, was the fan belt. My local friendly mechanic changed it for £20 for me.
All quiet now!
