97 Saxo Diesel Screeching Noise - BobbyG
When i start my Saxo from cold, it makes a screeching noise (similar to what you get from a fan belt). Noise gets worse if you rev the car, but then disappears within 15 secs of starting the car and doesn't return.

Is this noise the fan belt or is there any other belts etc that would make the noise? How best can I check as the fault wouldn't be there when I take it to a garage, unless I leave it overnight with him?

Probably the belt. You should tighten it, though personally I'd replace it.

Probably the fan belt. Can you see the belt easily when the bonnet is up? If so, get someone to start the engine and you can then look at the belt. If it's slipping this should be easy to spot.

The alternator drive belts are not particularly durable on the TUD5 installation on the 106D/Saxo vehicles. A further problem is the long post-heat time (especially at the present low ambient temperatures) which keeps the alternator at full output for several minutes following a cold start. On these vehicles, the glow plugs can be on for up to 5 minutes after starting.

Check the drive belt very carefully over its full length, looking for cracks perpendicular to the "Vees". Tension the belt such that a deflection of only 5mm is achievable with thumb pressure at the centre of the longest run with a hot engine. This is very tight, and needs to be.

Almost certainly fan belt. This is because when its cold the load (and demands) from the alternator are much harder. This means the belt is being called on to 'really turn' the componants. It it is loose it will slip and screach. Once warmer the deamand falls. In winter, moisture may make it worse by 'lubricating' pulleys just a tiny amount. I always run belts a little on the looser side as I have always been woried about over loading bearings ever since I got through a new Hilman Imp water pump in 4 weeks by overtightening a fan belt. However, one can overdo it.
Get a new belt for £5, and clean everything up nice. Should solve it, and you know the belt is good for 3+ more years.

Thanks guys, was the fan belt. My local friendly mechanic changed it for £20 for me.

All quiet now!
