Help. The near (battery) side front sidelight has gone on my son's 99 Bora. Taken off cover and there's not enough room to swing a cat in there. Didn't think I had particularly fat hands but I just can't get any purchase to loosen it. Any hints, tricks? Thanks. Read more

Take the battery out; makes replacement of any of the bulbs on that side a lot easier.

Pendragon?s Stratstone outlets had a couple of Cadillac 4.6 STS models and both sold. The 85k mile 2000W in the photo made £4,500 and another with 69k on a 1999V £4,050.

COORRR!!!

What a lot of car for your money. Bargain of the century?

I don't think that's great value. You can get the equivalent 7-Series, Lexus or A8 for 7k (or less) with the same year and miles and I reckon they're all worth paying the extra for.

Hi all

My mk2 GTI 8v is suffering from noticably dim lights. I can tell the difference between side and main, but the lights are dim at all settings. Dipped beam is about as bright as normal sidelights. The rears are also dim.

This all points towards an earthing problem. My problem is, where to start? Is there a common fault on these cars? The car starts fine, and all electrical accessories work OK with the engine off.

Out of interest, we had the front bumper replaced which would have involved connecting up new fogs, I suspect this might be the cause.

My mk2 Golf dip switch melted because I was using 55/100w bulbs. I fitted relays and an additional negative wire direct from the bulb to the battery. The improvement in light output was well worth it

Time to look for a winter runaround. I've a choice of 3 but which one? Ford Scorpio, Omega or SAAB 9000. I've had 2 Saabs b4 but never had the other two so what are they like in comparison. If it was down to comfy seats the Saab would win hands down, but its not. What are the Scorpio & Omega like to own & run? looks don't bother me hence the Scorpio in my choice. As I will be spending less than a grand FSH, showroom condition & suchlike I'm not to fussed over, so any advice will be most helpful. Will let you know what I bought in due course.

picked it
up this afternoon for less than £500. 168k,

I wish I was as brave as you cumfray1. If I bought cars like that I would be quite rich now.

Not brave, just phoned him up & said that if the car was at least half decent I would buy it. Went yesterday to see it, took it a test drive after checking all round & underneath it, checked the engine over, no strange noises or wrong coloured smoke from exhaust. Test drive went fine, car ran in a straight line when steering wheel was let go. Documentation was all in check. 1995 M plate 2.0GLS Omega 168k 1 yrs MOT £430, only thing wrong with it--chrome trim missing from rear bumper. Bargain.

A couple of times within the last week when turning the ignition key to start the engine all of the clocks and dials have gone haywire (spinning full circle before returning). It doesn't happen every time and I suspect that it is a loose connection somewhere. Can anyone please advise? Read more

I've had this for a couple of years on my '99 diesel. Try looking at the earth connections under the air filter (behind battery, in front of bulkhead), one of mine was so corroded it fell off, and inside door sills (pull back carpet and trim at front of front doors - both sides). My newly aquired Laguna has a pedal problem it does not always return ,I understand that this is caused by a faulty master cylinder. My question is, where is it and what sort of job is it to replace it.Regards Andy Read more

It must be different top the one I fitted on my VW a few years back then. That was quite a substantial thing.

Pug 106 1.5 XND starting
First start on a very cold day is rough and sluggish and it picks up slowly.
Just like a bad glow plug but it is not that. All the glow plugs and the control are working properly.
I am not getting excess smoke
The rest of the day I get normal starting even after several ours standing and good pulling from low revs + no contamination of water or oil. That seems to rule out head gasket.
Any suggestions?

If there is no smoke, the most likely causes of poor starting are an air leak in the fuel system (check the rubber injector spill pipes and blanking piece) or possibly the waxstat is not applying full injection advance. Check that the waxstat bowden is fully tight, and that the advance lever is fully on its stop when the engine is cold. These cables rust up internally - apply thinned waxoyl to the spiral outer sheath.

The post heat on these engines can be up to 5 minutes - check with a voltmeter on the glowplugs, or listen for the engine note to change as the load comes off the alternator. Use Beru plugs only for consistently good cold starts.

If you have an air leak in the fuel system, starting will be improved if you pump the "hand grenade" primer until it is hard before attempting a start.

A neighbour?s son has recently been banned for drink-driving. He received the statuary 12 month ban for a first offence, £800 costs and a fine of £800.

At the time of the offence his mother was becoming seriously ill and in fact by the time the case came to court and he was banned she had died.

I am not excusing his actions, or pleading that he should not have been banned, but I do think that the total sentence of ban + costs + fine seems rather severe in view of his personal circumstances. To the best of my knowledge there were no aggravating factors to the incident, such as abuse of the police, or any form of ?accident?.

What do others think? ????. Michael

As has been said before, we don't know what reasons he had to be out in his car whilst over the limit, so it's a little difficult to speculate that he may have been on his way to see his dying mother when he was stopped.

Thinking of this brings two fairly recent situations I was involved with to mind. The first was when my own mother fall ill last year. OK I was sober at the time and had about an hour to get to her bedside. I didn't make it, however I had spoken to her on the phone half an hour before I was told she'd taken a turn for the worse. Would I have driven if I thought I was over the limit? No I can honestly say I wouldn't have. If I'd had a couple of glasses of wine then I might have called on a friend.

I did drive because I knew I had not been drinking at all, but I was aware that trying to get there at dangerous speeds was probably not going to help. The last thing my mother would have wanted was for me to injure myself or someone else in the pursuit of a final goodbye. I was about half an hour into the journey when I received a call from my wife to tell me the bad news. Oddly enough I was actually concerned about getting back home before the news hit me, disabling my concentration. I did manage that.

The other incident was when our friends' 17 year old daughter had to go to casualty after a car accident. She was having a bbq with some friends and went out in the car to help someone else who had broken down. When the incident happened her boyfriend felt fustrated because he had had a few drinks by this time so was unable to drive her to hospital. However to his credit he realised that the young girl was best served by him not driving at all. The friend that took her was me.

Just recently the ABS and TC dash lights came on, at the same time the steering went a bit heavy - don't think all power steering was lost, just a little. In addition the speedo stopped working! Obviously electrical as they came back the next day but have gone again once or twice. Fuses are OK, is they a common relay that I should check? Read more

Could it just be a slipping belt, ie does the same belt drive the alternator & power steering pump.

Please can anyone help.
The instrument cluster on my A4 is faulty. Firstly the coolant warning light started flashing, then when i drove the car the speedo and revometer started exceeding the revs and speed I was doing (the needles were going off the clock) and finaly were the mileage should be it is now reading 'def'.
The car has been checked with diagnostic equipment, yet no faults were recorded.

what checks ? which equipment ?

vag-com will drive all the dials and test the instrument cluster, basic tools just check the main ecu.

I would try checking the connections, otherwise sounds like new unit.
