Time to look for a winter runaround. I've a choice of 3 but which one? Ford Scorpio, Omega or SAAB 9000. I've had 2 Saabs b4 but never had the other two so what are they like in comparison. If it was down to comfy seats the Saab would win hands down, but its not. What are the Scorpio & Omega like to own & run? looks don't bother me hence the Scorpio in my choice. As I will be spending less than a grand FSH, showroom condition & suchlike I'm not to fussed over, so any advice will be most helpful. Will let you know what I bought in due course.
TIA

I think the Scorpio was an under rated car that deserved to do better, if only it had had a better face.
Mind you for winter, only the Saab is FWD.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Especially the final Americanised version which rode and handled very much better than earlier models.
The square shaped Granada was a rightly popular car particularly in its cavenous estate version.

If you are worried about snow and its only for the winter, it has to be the SAAB with its FWD.
The other two are renown for being very tail happy in snow and ice.
Shame - the scorpio (tho exceedingly ugly) was a good car loaded with toys for its age.

RF - currently 1 Renault short of a family

Its face doesn't look so odd nowadays - just find an old three-pointed star badge and stick it on the grille to see what I mean!

For Winter = Saab. For non-winter conditions, I'd pick the scorpio followed by the omega. All 3 are lovely cars for the money. Hmmm, V6 models of Scorpio and Omega are very sweet.

Mate of mine just let his 95 "m" plate 2.5V6 CD auto go at auction for just £150!
It was genuine 67,000 miles, FSH, wad full of receipts, no major faults! In fact, apart from a couple of scratches and dings it was a great car!
Idiot!

Anything with front wheel drive, a heater, a good set of winter tyres, a can of de-icer and screenwash.

Well the Omega won. Found one yesterday on ebay, picked it up this afternoon for less than £500. 168k, 1weeks tax, brand new MOT. Previous owner for the MOT got it brand new shocks, discs n pads 2 new front wishbones & some fresh rubber. He gave it an oil n filter change yesterday prior to me picking it up today. Engine is still quiet after all those miles & been in the family from new. Definite bargain. You CAN find little gems on Ebay.
Now looking forward to some challenging driving in the coming months :-)

cumfray1,
Did you get any documentation on when the cambelt and tensioners were last changed? Needs doing every 40k or 4yrs.

I wish I was as brave as you cumfray1. If I bought cars like that I would be quite rich now.

Not brave, just phoned him up & said that if the car was at least half decent I would buy it. Went yesterday to see it, took it a test drive after checking all round & underneath it, checked the engine over, no strange noises or wrong coloured smoke from exhaust. Test drive went fine, car ran in a straight line when steering wheel was let go. Documentation was all in check. 1995 M plate 2.0GLS Omega 168k 1 yrs MOT £430, only thing wrong with it--chrome trim missing from rear bumper. Bargain.
