Can anything about done (legally) about someone who's using several vehicles all of which are untaxed but parked off road at the same address? Given the length of time this has been going on I think it's unlikely that the cars are registered at that address so what, if anything can be done?

Many thanks.

As we all know, double yellow lines on the side of the road mean No waiting at any time. This is confirmed by the Highway code site:
www.highwaycode.gov.uk/signs09.htm

I seem to remember however that when I passed my test (1987) that double yellows meant No Waiting but not necessarily all the time and that one had to consult the nearby plate for the restrictions. I even remember squabbling with someone in Cambridge about this and showing him the sign to prove I was right. However, passage of time, fading grey matter etc I'm more than willing to accept I am wrong. Last weekend I bought the AA Book of the Road from about 1965 at a jumble sale. A great book with some really interesting road maps, well worth 50p. In the section on road markings it states that double yellows should be read in conjunction with the nearby plate to ascertain the time for which they apply.

So, my question is: when did the rules on double yellow lines change or am I missing something here? Read more

This either didn't apply or must have changed, possibly to allowed controlled parking zones. The zone between where I live and the all-day zone in the town centre only applies for an hour a day to discourage commuters.

I do remember these and I'm sure I've recently seen them with the third stripe burned off since it's now redundant, or maybe invalid (thus allowing loading at any time!). Anyone know what the old stripes used to mean and when they changed?

My Audi is making a noise like that of a wheel bearing on its way out.....the bearings have been checked but no problem with them....my mechanic thinks it could be the differential....if so what can be done?....could it be something else?....and how much will it hurt my pocket?....also is the diff part of the gear box?...and would it be easier to get a reconditioned gear box?

Well, these Audi diffs do have a reputation for failing - its the output bearings that go. Your mechanic should be able to check for that fairly conclusively. Its not a cheap repair - the transaxle will have to be removed and split. Depending on where you live and who does it, I would say a £600-1000 job.

A4 Avant 2003 - brake light bulb has blown. Removed the easily (manually) removable side section inside the boot near the light cluster, only to be greeted by the amp and other bits and pieces. Does anyone know what needs to be removed to get access to replace the bulb?

Thanks. Read more

OK, I thought it might be as your recommended thread suggests. Thanks very much.

A colleague is trying to replace the pads on the rear of his W reg.Audi 100 Avant
The piston will not retract and it is not obvious what is stopping it.
Is it likely to be seized up or is there a technique to it?

This might have a slot in the piston (so you can screw it clockwise inwards with a large screwdriver) or a hex shaped hole (for which you use a large hex key).

This week I'm commuting in from a friends farm and each time see an Isuzu SUV travelling in the opposite direction. As far as I'm aware it's not a model officially imported to the UK.

It's quite a stylised, sporty loooking model, about the size of a Freelander and hasan integral hardcover for the spare wheel built into the rear door, in the same style as the Renault Scenic RX4.

Any ideas on what model this is? I'm intrigued. Read more

That's the beast. A quick rummage around for specs shows the current model has a 3.5 V6 and goes like a train. I'm surprised Isuzu don't import it.

I was watching Sky channel 166 last night - The Great British Quiz. OK - So I'm a bit sad, but I find this channel utterly addictive.

The quiz was a roadsign one where they showed 9 roadsigns and asked which ones were real. Well to my amazement, someone won (£800) while I was watching with what seemed to me to be completely wrong answers.
One of the signs was a Give Way sign that I thought was correct, but turned out to be incorrect.

The sign I am asking about though was a red circle (order sign) with a black car in it (facing forward) with a yellow "thing" above it. It was probably meant to represent a flashing beacon like you get on tractors and recovery trucks etc.

Does anyone know what this sign is? Could it be from a different country? Any ideas?

My 96 1.8 TDI has developed a loss of power, especially on acceleration. It is ok once you get up to speed, but pulling away it is embarrassingly slow.

I have read on the CBCB that injector pumps are prone to failing at 100k. mine has done 95, should I suspect this or maybe the injectors are dirty or on the way out. I have added some injector cleaner last night in the hope that this will clear it, but I suspect if it's the pump I may be looking at a write off.

Any ideas? Read more

Its at this point when you try and transfer ownership for updates that you find out your e-bay "find" is knicked.

If any sat nav or speed camera locator does not come with its original update software, assume its knicked.
