At just under 3 yrs old and 60,000 miles my 2.0 hdi picasso needs a new front pipe and back box at a price coming in around £500. The catalytic converter is integral with the front pipe, thats the big cost. Car is mainly used on long journeys - 2 hrs plus, driven to get there as such.
This is a shock to the system. I thought that diesel exhaust systems had an easier time rustwise than petrol jobs due to less condensation?
I've been driving around in various 'sheds' all these years and never had to replace a front pipe. First brand new car and this happens. Is this normal? Do they make exhausts out of cardboard these days and do you think I have any comeback against Citroen?
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I'm rethinking finances at the moment and my attention turns to the car.
I have a Picasso Exclusive 2.0 petrol auto in silver. 03 Reg, 26500 miles. I like the higher driving position, the tardis effect and find it very comfortable. The (2) kids like it in the back too. Having had a BMW before the Picasso, the squeaks and rattles and dodgy plastic finishes are an annoyance but not the end of the world.
I get a car allowance from work of £320 a month (after tax) and this is roughly the monthly repayment on the 5 year loan I took out to buy the car from new in March 03.
All fuel, tax, AA, servicing and maintenance is paid by the company and I pay tax on the £ value. So although fuel economy etc might not be a priority, it's all relative as I pay something towards it. Work is just about as secure as it gets with long notice period. The Picasso does about 26 mpg with urban school run/commute/supermarket and the odd weekend away.
Should I consider personal leasing instead? On the face of it I could get a decent car for less than £320/month and pocket the difference. Annual mileage would be below 10,000 as the Picasso's mileage has a couple of trips to the South of France on it that won't be happening again.
If you've read this far, thank you!
What makes/models would you recommend and what are the potential pitfalls etc of leasing? As regulars will know, I plead complete ignorance on most car stuff so do not be worried about stating anything obvious!
Do you think that half way through the loan (and it's a bog standard loan not HP) selling the car would fetch enough to pay the balance?

I'm in a kind of similar situation, but higher miles: I tend to change cars at 60,000 miles.(Avoids the expensive service, another set of new tyres, etc)
Current car is a Rover 75, which I will return under the "I've paid for half of it" rule.
Incidentally: Does anyone know what the position is regarding whether they can charge for the unusually high mileage
(It's 2 years old). Doesn't seem to be any small print, and the headline condition is that it has to have been reasonably cared for, or some such vague statement.
Regarding leasing, there are some outstanding deals available from time to time, generally on new models which the manufacturer wants to get out onto the road, purely for visibility.
I'm just now leasing for the first time, a Mercedes CLK, diesel automatic, for less than 300 per month.
Not bad, huh?
Also recall offers for a Chrysler Crossfire a couple of years ago at 100 per month.
Has to be cheap, if you're happy to take whatever happens to be available at the time!

Dear John,
I have a VW Passatt TDI 130 bhp (or used to!)
At just over 100,000 miles there was loss of power which was caused by turbo failure.
This was rectified by the local VW dealer (turbo boost valve) who was not prepared to offer a sympathetic warranty despite it being only 4000 miles over the warranty. I have had no problems with the engine until this time.
At motorway speeds the engine seemed lumpy and the fuel consumption reduced to 35 mpg, about 12 mpg what it usually is. I mentioned it to the garage who suggested I book it back in but because it was driveable they wouldn't be able to look at it for at least two weeks.
After a couple of weeks it failed again with exactly the same symptoms.
I took it in again and something else was replaced on the turbo - the mass air flow sensor. According to other sources this can fail at mileage above 90,000 miles however is not something that is checked during any service.
Six weeks later the turbo exploded when I was driving at high speed in the outside lane of the motorway. There was a loud clanking sound and grey and black smoke everywhere so much so I couldn't see where i was going!
The VW dealer said that the problem was unrelated to their previous work on the car and that a bolt on the turbo had worked loose, got into the engine which and then all the oil was sucked out over the bonnet and onto windscreen. When I asked why they said that 'this usually happens'.
If it usually happens why is not reported as a design fault and checked during services? I queried this and they had no answer but to tell me that a new engine would cost £6000 to fit.
As the dealer was involved with fixing the turbo in the first place and also mentioned that the bolt working loose is a common fault then why was it not checked during the time it was in the garage and also during the service in between these times?
Please can you advise what I should do as I believe the garage or VW to be partly responsible for this known issue.

If you don't mind me asking, why have you changed from diesel to a petrol?
I've been offered an Alfa Romeo 146 Ti 2.0 twin spark, should I go for it or leave alone. Always wanted an Alfa T-Spark. Read more
A couple of companies ago we had a couple of these as pool cars. I think they were 1.8s though - an absolute joy to drive nonetheless. Funny, they were always booked up ages in advance. Anyway - drive it like you stole it. You may experience the odd mechanical niggle (ours had problems with handbrake and electric windows) but you'll forget all about them when you're driving it. Enjoy!

Life is complex; it has real and imaginary parts.
I've a 2002 51 plate Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi(90) Rapier which I'm trying to sell. It's the 4 door saloon in silver, excellent condition with 45000 miles on the clock.
It's advertised in Autotrader, Exchange & Mart, Tradeit (local bristol freeads - sold 2 cars through this previously) and Adtrader in Wales.
Advertised at 5250 ono, but i've had absolutley no interest in 2 weeks, and its starting to worry me.
Is there something else i can do?
Thanks

Fortunately i've only had to fend off about 8 calls, so i shall count myself lucky.
The easiest way to get rid of these parasites is to push the red 'end call' button.
I have a problem with a Corsa 1.2 (2000) not starting after being on a run. After leaving the car for a few minutes it will not start until cold. The dealer cannot find anytihng wrong.
Any ideas ?

camshaft sensor?
Or possibly the crankshaft sensor. Either one would cause the problems you're getting.
Hi all - Just got my Costco 'Passport' through and for those of you who are interested they'll be doing the following offer:
Navman iCN510 in car & mobile GPS navigation system 'premium edition' for £281.99 (incl VAT) between 7-13/11/05. This is £50 off the normal price.
Membership costs just over £20 pa but I seem to recall you can get this refunded if you're not happy at any time within the first year.
I have no idea what these units typically sell for but Costco electronics are normally very good value and they have a range of other car related stuff at very good prices.
Also, in my experience and unlike some of their internet and retail rivals, their customer service is excellent. Our Costco sourced Philips 32" TV recently conked out 2 years and 11 months into its 3 year warranty and I was given a full refund - no questions asked. All other 'returns' I've made over the years have been equally unproblematic with full refunds given on the spot. Read more
Thats a good price for the 510 premium. It will do the job nicely but Just bear in mind its being sold cheap as its now been replaced by the ICN520 with upgraded software.
Call me nuts, but I don't like the battery sitting under the windscreen driver side. The car has gone all rusty in there and water leaks into the footwell, if it is parked facing up-hill.
I had it welded a good 6 - 8 years ago and it is now all rusty again. (originally it was caused by battery acid leaking from the crappy VW battery which was supplied from new (previous owner), I put a sealed one in. but the damage has been done.
I'd like to re-site the battery, but the only place I can see for it would be in the boot. Is this possible? Read more
What's that round cylinder thing about 3 inches diameter 6 inches
long that sits by the battery? Just wondering :o)
Motor for the windscreen wipers I think.
my mate has a presentable gt4 celica on a H plate, he came around the other day to show off his new stainless exhaust, while i laid in the road having a look i noticed the sills where rotten...i recon i could poke a hole as big as my fist on one side and the other would make a hole if proded
is this a common thing on celicas?? ive not seen many rusty jap cars at all...the rust is level with the back edge of the door Read more
yeah it is an import from japan....but i still didnt expect to see such rot...god knows what its like right underneath
Whats the point of sidelights?
I think they should be done away with. Manufacturers shouldn't install them.
This morning's drive to work was a bit on the foggy side and approx 75% of cars coming towards me had their sidelights on. I didn't see them until they were about 20 yards away!
They are a hazard! The driver with the sidelights on thinks he is safe because he has his lights on, but they are as good as invisible from any sort of distance.
Sorry for the rant, but this is downright dangerous! Read more
I leave my front fogs on at night too. Four lights
are better than two, right?
NO NO NO NO! The use of fog lights when visibility is unaffected by fog or spray is illegal. The people who turn every light they have on just cos it is dark really annoy me. As a glasses wearer I get all kinds of extra refraction when confronted by these (and no its not because of dirt on my specs/windscreen!)

Thanks very much steve, I had a quick look. Surely it must be a faulty part?
