I see in this mornings DT black boxes have again surfaced with the promise of incentives to fit one ,if they can ever get them to work. Read more
Has anyone seen this van because it was stolen at arond 3:00 in Bushey near Watford in Hertfodshire?
It's a Silver Short Wheel Base Standard Low Roof Ford Transit. It is a rarer one as it has electric windows and air con. It also has a number of laddders on the roof which probably have been taken off now and an armed cable in the gap between the right rear door and the side of the right rear piller and a roof rack.

Well, I'll be jiggered. I didn't know you could do that!
I have just been given a 1993 Corsa from my girlfriend, however the radio requires an unblocking code after the mechanics did something during its MOT (I think with the battery?), my girlfriend does not have the code and being a student starting a new term cannot afford to pay someone for one, and I cannot obtain the serial number of the unit either because I do not have the correct tool to remove it to look. Can anyone help please? The radio is a Phillips SC201, and its in a 1993 'L' reg Vauxhall Corsa LS.

I have just read a recent post in which the writer said "Not using the revs is the biggest killer of an engine".
He *may* have been talking about diesel engines but does this apply to petrol engines too....and if so, why? Read more
An aircraft-engineer friend of mine talks in terms of "mechanical sympathy". Sadly, those who have it are in a minority. You know what I mean: feeling the pain of an engine screaming at maximum revs for too long, groaning as driving in too low a gear induces rumbles and jolts, wincing as a cold engine is pushed too hard too soon, mourning the fate of a car faced with nothing but short trips and excessive gear changing. All it takes is to grasp the idea that engines need coddling until they are fully warmed up and that extremes of treatment (or maltreatment) should not last more than a moment.
Hi,
I'm looking to buy a new car and was wondering if anyone know a good VW Forum where I can hear what people are really saying about there car ownership.
Thanks WipeOut Read more
Thanks
You all know about my Forester and the fact that it usually does about 20mpg driving around suburban Manchester. Now I'm not complaining, but as the car has just rolled over 16,000 miles its been getting at least 22mpg. No change to the driving pattern, little change to the weather, No change to the fuel (optimax) and I had the oil changed about two or three months ago.
Curious? I am.

I wonder how noticable the improvement in fuel economy is, just
by changing atmospheric conditions? i.e. is my improvement in economy
solely down to the onset of Autumn or has the car
finally 'run in'?
--
I would suggest that the effect of changing atmospheric conditions is likely to be more of a sudden change, and therefore more noticable from day to day, than that of the engine being fully run-in, after all the weather can change over night though the run-in process can take many thousands of miles with only minute changes to the engines charateristics from month to month yet alone day to day.
One other thing also weather/season related, which may already have been mentioned, the improvement was not simply due to the effects of aircon/climate was it? Either air con being switched off completely or if you have climate control set at a constant temp it will be less of a drain on engine power as the ambient temp nears or passes the set temp.
Can anyone tell me where the fan thermostat switch is, or point me to a website showing the location. Car intermittently overheats in city traffic but oil level is not rising, and no smell of exhaust in cooling system. Colling fan cuts in occasionally.

Likely to be hiding underneath the fan cowling at the bottom centre of the radiator.
affected the reliability of this car? Going to change my car soon andI was wondering if this reliable Jap car has been downgraded to Renault standards!

Futher to the temperature gauges becoming obsolete thread, how about the tachometer becoming obsolete too?
What the point of them? who cares if they're there or no?

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)
Now that the damp mornings are becoming more frequent I have noticed that I am getting a film of mist on the windscreen that refuses to go with the wipers. It will disappear once the car has been moving for a while but takes about a half mile! This is not so good when the sun is low in the sky.
Does anybody else have a problem with this?
I changed the wiper blades at the start of summer and have tried using glass cutting polish on the screen to remove any residue. Would water dispersants help, I wonder? Read more
The military version of Rain-X is a different animal to the stuff you buy in your local car accessory shop. For starters it costs several hundred pounds per small bottle, and second its a pig to put on (I know I used to do it). Works a treat though! On cars it lasts for years when properly applied, Aircraft around 12 months.
The key for all these products is to get the glass very clean (cerium oxide polish, followed by an alkaline detergent), then rinse off with water. They often need to glass to have a molecular layer of water present to "stick" to the glass.

p.s. One rain storm at 300+ mph can erode a plastic screen badly! Its not just for passenger comfort they avoid storms.

The biggest problem will be having the government and all it's offshoots knowing exactly where you have been at any time of day or night.
We have enough history behind us to know where handing that sort of power to the state leads.
