Question paintwork
cavi

hi all i was thinking about how i would go about repairing some rather deep scratches on my bonnet and it has been suggested that fairy liquid + water and very fine wet and dry would work but surely this is how to prep the the area prior to painting? apparently the fairy liquid blends in with the particles of paint you rub off and it fills the scatch cant imagine it working any suggestions? its met paint and i cant afford a respray otherwise id have the whole car done! thanks in advance Read more

It might be easier to get an undamaged bonnet in the same colour from a scappy.

Just bought an unroadworthy car from a private seller so basically no Sale of Goods Act and all that.
Just wondering if i can goto the police, report them.
Anyone had any experience of this or can give any advice.
By the way it was bought on a well known auction site so again don't think i have any rights.
I can fix it myself but thats obviously not the point.
Thanks for any advice Read more

True, but the Road Traffic Act 1988 s.75 applies to anyobdy, not just businesses. It's not trading standards legislation but generally applicable road traffic law.

Hello All,

I have an Audi A4 1995 tdi with what I think is the factory alarm. It did work fine, but now it does not want to unlock car.

It locks the car fine, but when I go to unlock the lights just flash, but the doors do not unlock. Does any one have any ideas? I have tired changing the battery in the fob but that has made no difference. I do not have a user manual for this car, nor can I find a reset procedure on the web.

Any help would be great..cheers H

ps: I still have my 306DT, the audi is the wife's.

A friend of mine in Sweden has a 150,000 km (93k miles) SAAB 9-5 Aero wagon with manual gearbox that frequently fails to engage reverse gear. The gear lever 'feels' normal but selection simply baulks. The clutch appears to fully disengage (there is no creep in any gear when the clutch pedal is depressed) and trying to aid selection by choosing another gear first (a trick that works well with my wife's XU7 306 and worked well with my old Rover 420 GSi for example) has no beneficial effect.

Do these transmissions have any weak spots beyond the obvious next step of checking linkage adjustment or wear points, please? Note that reverse gear is used at the end of every trip because instead of a steering lock SAAB still persist with their 'beg to be different' gear selector lock. I have been advised that reverse gear on this gear box does not have synchromesh.

As an aside, the problem has been prevalent for months, slowly getting worse, but the desire to fix it has been brought to a head by events on Sunday; Trying to park in a Göteborg multi storey, both of us watched in horror as the lady driving a Mk I V70 in front of us stopped and selected reverse gear having overshot and chosen to defy a 'reserved for company XXX' bay. Despite matey blowing the SAAB's horn long and loud, all the time trying and failing to select reverse gear himself (we had no one behind), she kept on coming. From a car's length to nothing, BANG. With clutch depressed and brakes released to try and lessen damage, the walking speed impact still resulted in one cracked front bumper and a large hole courtesy of towbar... No apparent damage to the V70 - even to floor pan - beyond some of the SAAB's number plate reflective film on the tow ball cover.

Hi

My 95 did this, it was the synchromesh on the reverse gear, apparently the teeth wear down and it doesn't engage properly. The garage showed me the faulty part and it was apparent that the teeth had worn down quite considerably.

The garage that did the work were M & T Transmissions
120, Bradway Rd, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S17 4QW
Tel: 0114 236 3617, you could contact them to ask what the exact problem is likely to be.

it cost my supplier £400 to fix and is apparently a common fault.

I got someone to look at my 1990 1.3 Golf today which I thought might have had issues with the carb, but the guy who looked at it told me it is missing completely on one cylinder when it is idling. He recommended a compression test which I can get done for 20 quid, but I'm wondering if it is worth it now.

The guy was very sure of what he is talking about and apparently once the head has to come off to have any work done it will cost at least 300 quid which is more work than the car is worth.

Is there anything else that would cause it to miss on one cylinder while idling that might not require a load of work?? Maybe the oil breather or something? The thing is when I put my foot down a bit it runs lovely.

What a attempt at swearing deleted. It's something I could never have known when I went to look at the car as it could have been the leads or something causing the probs, but now after getting the insurance and bits and pieces it doesn't look like it will be economical to put right.

Sorry it didn't go as planned.

A local garage should have all the equipment and know-how to fit it. It shouldn't take long so hopefully the labour bill won't be too big.

I would have thought that an hour of their time should sort it.

Someone with more experience will no doubt correct me if I am a mile out.

I bought my current car on 26 November 2004 and it's not due to be taxed until 31/10/05. Out of curiosity I've just checked the DVLA website www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk and it says "Date of last V5 issue 22/03/2005". What's the significance of this? Should I be worried?

Earlier this year the DVLA sent out new style V5 forms
(V5C I think). So it would suggest you received the new
one around that date?

Oh dear, my memory is going! I informed DVLA that our address had changed because we had been allocated a house/street number and as a result we were sent (and we received) a new V5C. Panic over. Sorry guys!

I need to drive to Paris & back in a day. Does anyone know a realistic estimate of the time it would take to drive from Calais To the Paris ringroad? Times would be just out of UK rush hours both way.

Many thanks. Read more

This was passed onto me today and seems to come from a member of Thames V Police Roads Policing. May just save you some points if you use the A34 over the coming months:

A lot of you will use the A34 north of Oxford either for travelling to and from work or in the course of your work.

I have had a meeting with the contractors today and thought it wise to advise everyone that from sometime next fully active speed cameras will be in place and in operation. The Safer Roads Partnership vans will also be enforcing the 40mph speed limit through the road work section.

During the day it may appear that no work is taking place. This is true because the majority of work is being done overnight to reduce the impact on traffic. However there are long sections of central crash barrier that have been removed and the speed limit is in place as a safety measure.

The roadworks are due to last until mid February next year. Drive safely and look after your driving licence! Read more

The local authority has put up 15 new speed cameras on a 6 mile stretch ofthe A642 between the junction with A629 at Waterloo, Huddersfield and the National Mining Museum.
To save money, only 3 of the 15 installations will actually have cameras, these will start operating in November according to the local paper.
