hi all i was thinking about how i would go about repairing some rather deep scratches on my bonnet and it has been suggested that fairy liquid + water and very fine wet and dry would work but surely this is how to prep the the area prior to painting? apparently the fairy liquid blends in with the particles of paint you rub off and it fills the scatch cant imagine it working any suggestions? its met paint and i cant afford a respray otherwise id have the whole car done! thanks in advance

Exactly what time of the evening and how many pints in to it was this advice given? You're right you'll end up with a nice smooth finish but all the paint will be on the floor not in the scratches. Rather than respray it yourself I would make sure there's no rust and gradually fill in the scratches with several layers of touch up paint with an very fine artists brush finishing off with some more coats of lacquer. Won't be perfect but better than a DIY respray IMO.

See what Chips Away (or similar) say. You might be pleasantly surprised by their estimate. I wouldn't dream of DIYing it in such a conspicuous area.

thats nonsense about it blending the particles in...sometimes with a very fine scratch you can sand the top layer of and re polish it

you may also consider touching it in neatly and then using 2000 grit to smooth it down a little then polish, with practice it can look nice on certain colors..although it can also go very wrong

right today got a pot of touch up paint from a shop that does colour matching so seeing as the paint is a really deep red ill apply several layers in the scatches then see if tcut colour restorer blends it in i dont really need a perfect finish after all its a 12 year old car and anything is better than somebodys name scratched in my bonnet! thank you for all the replys they have gave me a little more knowlege!

TBH you wont get rid, using these is likely to pronounce the problem rather than get rid-only real way out is complete respray of Bonnet,Even then it will take a decent sprayer to correct!ie match paintwork

It might be easier to get an undamaged bonnet in the same colour from a scappy.
