As far as I know, it is illegal to use "untaxed" vegetable oil in a road vehicle. I am not sure how many people have been prosecuted recently or how you would ensure you paid the correct duty if you wished to do so. 44p per litre does seem attractive.

There is a fairly dodgy looking garage on Edge Lane in Liverpool that sells what they say is a 95% Biodiesel/5% Diesel mix for 79p per litre. My VW diesel engine runs quite happily on Shell Diesel Extra at 92p per litre at present so I think I will stick with that for the time being.

Can one or more of our boffins comment on this one ?

NS reports that vegetable oil needs a catalyst to make it a suitable biofuel. Up to now the catalysts have been petrochemical based, and as such lack ?green? credentials. Or, sulphuric acid, which is difficult to remove. The latest catalyts are based on sugar lumps which are scorched to remove some of the oxygen and hydrogen, and then treated with sulphuric acid to replace the hydrogen and oxygen. The result is a solid, insoluble catalyst, which can easily be added and removed from the fuel. It comments that more than 600 filling stations in the USA serve biodiesel alongside gasoline.

1. How does this relate to the use by some BRs of used cooking oil ??
2. At one time sugar in the petrol tank was method of sabotaging someone?s engine. One chap I knew bought such a car and overhauled the engine. His wife told me that it smelled like caramel.

Is shell Diesel Extra a biofuel? Our diesel seems to run OK on it.

Biodiesel may already be added to any diesel sold in the land at up to 5%. The same goes for ethanol and other plant-derived fuels. Most bio-fuels are at the moment, I think, IMPORTED from Brazil.

"Revenue and Customs has consulted with the trade and we have agreed that cooking oil has to go through a specific manufacturing process for it to be eligible for the lower duty rate"

In other words... the big oil companies don't want people to know that Joe Public can make biofuels.

"No... let's keep them believing that we do it by magic in our refineries. Just imagine how much money we'd lose if everyone started doing this. Let's tax them out of business. Oh, and Mr Blair, here's that big suitcase of money *ahem* I mean important documents we promised you."

Bah.

Those who remember my previous contributions to this site on the subject of biodiesel may be surprised to read what I'm about to say, but this may actually be good news.

One of the reasons I'm happy with my own biodiesel supplier is that I know the fuel is made to a specific standard (an internationally recognised and accepted industry standard), and that my engine (VAG TDi) doesn't need to be modified in any way to use that fuel and isn't damaged by it.

I don't believe that HMC&E have "changed the goalposts" with regard to the conditions under which biofuel producers can benefit from the derogation of duty - rather, they finally seem to be enforcing it. Hopefully this means that those people (and businesses) that have spent time and money producing a quality fuel that meets the specified standard are no longer expected to compete with those who just mix vegetable oil with a bit of solvent and tell their customers that it's just fine to use this in your car, no engine damage over the long term, no warranty worries, no problem.

I once had a rather intense discussion with someone who advocated selling the latter type of fuel, even though he was unable to provide any information to back up the claim that such a mixture was perfectly acceptable as road fuel, either technically or legally. When I (more or less) said "so essentially you're carrying out your R&D on your customer's cars without their knowledge or consent", he stopped corresponding with me.

*NOTE* the person I corresponded with was not (to my knowledge) in any way connected with the company mentioned in the BBC article linked above. I have written this post solely because the article in general reminded me of that correspondence and other related discussions I have had.

Thanks for that info.

I have never even driven a diesel car so most of what I know about the scene I have read on the forum so I now have a little more for the info bank.

I posted the BBC link for forum members.
