Thought this might be interesting, for those of us who check our consumption on each fill-up,. thereby getting an accurate reading - what's the worst you've ever got from a full tank, and what's the best you've ever got from a full tank?
I know that those who trust their on-board-super-duper-computer will want to post too, so go for it, but let us know how you've got the info.

I'll start us off: Mine is the old fashioned method as mentioned above, brim tank, reset milo, use fuel, rebrim, compare fuel used to mileage completed.

Worst tank: 23mpg
Best tank: 33mpg

I'm not quite sure which of those is the most embarrassing :D

That best tank was done almost entirely at between 100 and 120 mph though (in Germany) so I think is quite impressive. And some people question the usefullness of 6th gear! Read more

Worst:
Chevrolet 454 pick-up: 9 mpg everywhere. It had twin 25gal tanks.
BMW 730i: 16mpg on everyday commute (3 miles each way)

Best:
BMW 730i: 31.5 mpg during year 2000 fuel strike, non-stop to Aberdeen from East Anglia.

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect an auxiliary audio input to the radio in my 54 reg Vectra so I can plug my PDA/MP3 player in? The unit is the standard fit CDR2005. What I envisage is a 3.5mm jack socket mounted on one of the spare switch plates around the radio unit.

I also want a DAB radio, but think it's probably a lot cheaper to rig an aux input and just plug in a portable DAB unit.

Thanks in advance.

That box is very similar to the one I bought. It's called an "adapter" and it's made by Soundlinx. It looks identical to that and allows me to connect my 6000 stereo up to an Alpine cd changer.

Cost? £50. It's a box with a few wires in.

My recent MOT was done while the garage computer was on-line, linked to DVLC, and my certificate was a blank form with the car details ( obtained from the database ) filled in by the printer on completion of the test.

The implications of this system when it is fully implemented ( I believe it is presently being trialled ) are so immense that I cannot think of them all; however it did occur to me that, once legislation is put in place, there may soon be fixed penalty notices issued for the offence of not having an current MOT unless SORNed

I think that the only offence is use of a car without the MoT on the road. If a car with no MoT is parked off road, but in tax, no offence is committed.

Of course ANPR can get around that by providing evidence that the car is used on the road, but data mining alone isn't suitable for catching drivers with no MoT - although it could be used to send out 'friendly' reminders that could be followed up.

The diesel engine starts immediately after using the heater when cold. However when hot/warm need to crank the engine for ages and eventually it will start, blowing lots of white smoke out of the exhaust. Once going the engine runs OK.

Anyone any idea whats wrong? Water temperature reads OK so maybe its some other sensor?? Read more

Hi Colonel

Thanks for your help........

Do you mean the fuel temperature sensor??

- Does anyone know if under-12 year olds can travel in the front passenger seat of the car, in Germany? (Even with a child seat fitted and seatbelt on?)

I don't think it's allowed in France, and I'm not sure about the UK any more? I'm going on a long run up to Denmark next week and am thinking of driving overnight; my son will have more space up-front.

Thanks! Read more

"Children in cars: children under 12 or 1.5 metres tall are not allowed to travel unless using an appropriate restraint."

What about adults under 1.5 metres tall (5')?

Hi All

I do hope you can help me as I am at my wits end.

I bought a VW Golf Mark 5 in December 2004. When I went to collect the car, the doors didn't fit properly, nor did they close properly either. There were a few other little things, but the doors were the main problem. The dealership, said that they would take the car into the dealership and try to fix it.

After 3 days, the car came back and the door were still massively out of alignment. The VW garage, said they would get me another car.

In March, the new one came. Initially, there was a problem with the centre console cover, which was badly marked. I pointed this out to the salesman, who offered to replace the part, straight away, with a second hand part out of another car. I refused and waited three weeks for a new part.

Then the Alarm failed, due to a faulty siren. This was fixed, however a week after it being fixed, a new fault appeared. Everytime I went over a bump, the was a vibration and rattle, which progressive got worse. This took 5 times in the garage to find, and it was diagnosed as a faulty bracket behind the dashboard, which had incorrectly fitted during manufacture. Whilst it was in the garage, they also found that the CV joint was leaking grease heavily and had to be replaced.

Whilst it was in the garage, the car was also damaged, by a mechanic opening the door into the side of mine, leaving a dint on it.

About a month ago, during the good weather, I noticed some discolouration in the paintwork on the passenger door. It was like the black, was slightly grey. I thought it was dirt, but polishing and washing has had no effect. It is only noticable, when the sunlight is on the car.

About two weeks ago, the alarm failed again. It has been diagnosed as the Alarm siren again. This was the last straw. I have gone back to VW to demand my money back. I paid £17,000 for the car and I am absolutely fed up with it and I have no confidence in the car. Its fine to drive, but it keeps going wrong.

Now, there appears to be a squeak in the front suspension aswell, when I go over a speed hump.

Can I demand my money back or another car ? Overall, at the moment the car has been in the dealership 10 times in 5 months and the last 3 problems have not been fixed, as I don't want the car anymore.

I do hope you can help me, as I really am fed up with it all now. All I want is a car that works properly. Having taken delivery of 2 cars, you would think that one of them would be OK. Am I asking for too much ? The car has only done 3k miles and is 5.5 months old now.

Can I demand my money back under the Sale Of Goods Act 1994 ?

Many Thanks

Twice after long journeys in hot weather the car has failed to start (electrics working but no turn over),last time I left it and the next day it started no problem. Is it something to do with the heat or is this coincidental?

Not with overheating. Next time it won't start, look at the light. If it flashes quickly (more than every 2 seconds) If it is, you have an immobiliser problem (which I doubt if it's a temperature problem). If it doesn't you need to look elsewhere.

Don't worry though - someone will be along soon to help.

Hello

How do i tell if the front left brake disc is worn? There has been a scraping/scouring sound from the left side for over 12 months under heavy braking and recently downhill this was accompanied by a squeal. I have not noticed any other problems apart from this. I changed the brake pads when I first noticed this about 12 months ago but the noise continues.
It got through last MOT fine and as the next one is due am wondering whether to get the discs changed before the next one?

thanks

There ought to be a minimum thickness stamped on the disks although if they are original it may have rusted away as it is sometimes on the edge. A workshop manual, hayes etc may well have the spec in them (library copy?). If you're worried then for the sake of 20 or 30 quid a pair, I'd change them. If they're original one then 15 years is a fair old time.
