Most 'new' clutches come from a large company called National Autoparts in Nottingham. They make them as aftermarket 'new' items for most of the major motor factors, using names such as FAI, NAP, Ferodo, Unipart etc... They can sell them as new, even though they are reman.

They are made from second hand clutches that are rejuvinated to be as good as new, only the castings and pressings remain, all else is replaced, however, they are made to different qualities and prices for different customers. eg. ferodo specify and supply their own friction.

Needless to say some slip through with loose hubs or worn splines on the driven plates, and some lower-end brands are supplied with cheap far eastern release bearings and others with japanese NSK.

Sounds to me like you have aflakey clutch.

Was on the M40, 1 junction before High Wycombe going East/Southbound, when I spotted in my rear view mirror some police bikes just over half a mile behind. They all had the blues going and as they got closer I noticed that there was a blue S-Type Jag in the middle of them. As they got closer I counted 6 bikes, 2 at the front, 1 either side and 2 at the back. They were taking up about a lane and a half between them and going well over a ton, probably 120+ as I was doing a good speed and they went away from me like I was sat still.

As they passed there was just one occupant in the Jag wearing sunglasses and that was it.

Anyone have any idea what this was all about? Read more

BOT: Could have been royalty or VVIP if there had been someone in the back, but it was just the driver... maybe they were on the way to collect the royalty or VVIP?

Either that or it was Harry seeing how far he could push his dad before he gets a telling off

Does anyone have any advice on the best nearly new family estate to buy?

I would really like one with the pull down seats in the back (like they have in the V70) but if possible I'd prefer to get a car that wasn't quite so expensive. I would steer away from MPVs if at all possible. Thanks for any thoughts on this matter

I have a 1998 nissan primera 1600 si. When I start it from cold there is a rattle coming from the waterpump end of the engine. When the engine is up to temp the noise has virtually gone. Any ideas anyone

Im not sure but i had an escort did the same thing noise wise i mean and it was the start of the big end going like as if someone chucked a ball bearing in the engine sound only did it when cold and only did it first thing in the morning lasted about 2 seconds i was advised to get rid quick but thats the worst thing that could be happening hopefully its only a simple mater but the heat shield will make a noise if the engine is hot or cold anyway best of luck

Has anyone used 24/7 Spares network lately? I have tried repeatedly to get hold of them by email and phone and they simply aren't answering. I wonder if they have gone bust? If so, it's a real pest because I need their help to resolve a dispute with one of their suppliers.

Sorry, false alarm. They are alive and active.

Not very active if they don't answer the 'phone or email.

By the way, if your dispute is with something you bought from them, then liability rests with them, not their supplier. (I may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick here :-)).

As these guys are now patrolling the motorways I would just like clarification on their powers and abilities.

According to the Highways Agencies they have no more powers than you or I and 'haven't sought them'.

So presumably they can not pull me over. Report me for speeding. I can ignore their directions and instructions as I wish.

Is this not true? Read more

Let's hope the deal with the lack of lane dicipline on the 3+ laned roads .... keep left unless overtaking, and don't park yourself in the middle lane.

Lane 1 is not the lorry lane, it is for all to use.

And anything that enables the roads to be reopened to traffic more quickly after a delay eg accident is be very welcome.

And when major intersections are closed and all the traffic is diveted onto the local roads, then back on to the major road, someone on point duty to assist with the traffic flow would be very welcome. For example, the A406 in London at the Waterworks junction, when the underpass is closed and the diverted traffic overwhelms the phasing of the lights causing long queues and delays to be the result.

how do,

i think its best to start a new thread due to size for reading the other on "mondeo vibration through seats on motorway"

i still have the seat vibration on motorway, i'm probably going to either get 2 new tyres or alloys as it could be either.

But i have 2 new problems.

i put the new tyres on the front as a test to see if the vibrations through the seat went away and i have another problem, the car is veering to the left, the front did have more wear on the outsides like.

is this the tracking that would fix this?

2nd problem is the clutch, after about half an hours driving it gets really heavy, fine cold and even when engines warm but about half an hour or more later is really heavy.

it was sqeaking a bit so i sprayed it with WD40 the other week, including the piston type thing that you can see.

can i grease it up with something or is this piston thing perhaps gone?

Hey thanks,
With my clutch it only appears after driving for a while. In the beginning there is no problem.
Was this the same case with you? The clicking occurs when actually releasing the pedal just before it reaches its top position.

Motorway Madness

Dry M4 bright sunshine, going westbound just after Junction 10 in lane 3 at 85mph on my bike. 2 cars in lane 2 at 70 mph about 50m apart, 1 further ahead in lane 1 as we pass the junction on ramp westbound. I'm just overtaking the 1st car in lane 2. OK ?
Maroon Vectra drives down on ramp, undertakes 1st car in lane 2 at a differential of 20-30mph then swings out behind me as he is unable to undertake the 2nd car in lane 2 due to the car in lane 1. He is now closer than 10m behind me at 85mph.
I have a choice : pull into lane 2 and brake hard to avoid the next car which is now < 50m away, carry on at 85mph with car tailgating me or add speed to pull in front of the next car in lane 2 at a safe distance.
I choose the latter option and am annoyed to see the Vectra match my speed 90,95,100 without dropping back at all and I go to pull in.
This is when he flips his blue lights on for a brief moment. Then sweeps past at 100 and proceeds to tailgate the next car with his blues off.
If he had stopped me it would have been my word against the 2 officers in the car and guess what would have happened ?
Surely they aren't allowed to drive like that ?

Story in the paper yesterday.

3 years ago there were 292 car ranges (I guess that's Focus, Fiesta, etc) and 4301 models (Focus hatch 1.6 LX, Focus hatch 1.6 Zetec, etc.) Now there are 322 ranges and over 6000 different models.

This, apparently, is causing difficulties for dealers because they may not be able to show the customer the model he is interested in, let alone let him test drive it.

Any dealers (Blue Haddock?) out there want to comment on how they are finding it? (And how many people per year do you get wanting to test drive a Yaris Verso?) Read more

blue_haddock

Yes there does appear to be more models than there used to be, things like mini-mpv's just weren't around 15 years ago and yes there are also more and more spec levels for each model.

Gone are the days when it was pretty easy to work out how well spec'd a car was L, GL, GLX etc but now it's much more difficult with makers such as ford having LX, Zetec, Ghia, Titanium and Vauxhall having style, life, design etc It's no where near as easy as it was although toyota's aren't too bad with T2, T3, T4, T-Spirit etc

As for yaris verso test drives, we get a few requests, normally for motability customers and we have to scrat around to find them one to drive as we don't run one as a demo.
