Fyi, found out today that the big Supermarkets as well as the BPs etc of this world have all bought in to information from several of the fleet operators and chargecard companies.

Each morning they now receive a report showing the prices the previous day. Up till now, this info was only given to them weekly I believe.

This will explain why some seem to be changing their prices on an almost daily basis just now. Read more

And don't forget that the lion's share of the price is tax. If the Government starts losing this tax revenue, they will simply have to put taxes on other things up. Government has got to get its tax from somewhere.

Within reason, I am in favour of higher fuel prices. The sooner the world becomes less dependent on this environmentally unfriendly and finite resource the better.

The solution is to drive more economical cars and explore alternative fuels.

Hi

As most of you know I have got a Rover 75. Had it MOT'd last week and failed on NSR ball joint. Garage contacted supplier and Rover part was on a 3 week backlog...no good as needed car.

Remembered that last year the other side needed doing and it had a BMW part fitted from either 3 or 5 series - cant remember which now! Mentioned this to garage and they called supplier and the BMW was the same. Only problem was:

Rover part - £68+vat +fitting
BMW part - £117+vat +fitting

Cut a long story short, got car back today and mechanic said that the part came in same box and part was exactly the same as the one that came off..only more expensive because it came in BMW box.

How can this be for the same piece of steel?? Read more

I have recently been notified by my present insurer that I am not able to change cars frequently on the policy. I intend to change cars every month, by buying them at auction and selling them to hopefully avoid depreciation. I am not in the motor trade and the absolute maximum number of car changes I will make is 10 in a year.

My present insurer thinks I should change to a motor trade policy but I will only ever have one car at a time and a maximum of 10 changes a year (likely to be anything between 3 and 8 changes) does not constitute a part time motor trader according to the trade insurers I have spoken to. I am told that I would have to sell a minimum of 25 cars a year to have a trade policy. I am frankly surprised my current insurers are refusing to help as so far they have charged a fee everytime I have changed cars (5 times in the last 13 yrs!)

Is it at all possible to acquire a private policy that allows the holder to change cars a maximum of 10 times a year?

Greatly appreciate you help

Many thanks

To offer advice I'd need to understand ......... why your insurer thinks your trading and how many changes per year your insurer believes is acceptable.

I think we can assume that hatman has advised his insurer of his intention to change his car many times a year therefore they must consider the number of changes (up to 10) he mentions in his first post as unacceptable.

Following on from Neat Touches of the past and present, what touches do you dream of for the future...
To start off, I would like to see some sort of front mounted brake lamp (not sure on colour) so that you (as the driver in front) can see that the car behind has 1. noticed you 2. has applied the brakes as appropriate. Read more

Been thinking about this.

The neat touches I like are those that give me information. Like dashboard clocks. All cars have had them for years, but when I was growing up, they didn't. (btw, anyone know when last a car was on the market without a dashboard clock?)

And I remember the first time I got a car which buzzed at me when I left the lights on. That was useful.

And I really like it when I hire a car that tells me the outside temperature - useful for warning of ice in cold weather, but I like to know what the temperature is all the time. Curiousity, you know.

Some cars, like my Ford Ka, don't have rev counters. I miss not knowing how many revs the engine is doing.

SO - what I would like is more information. I gather some cars have an engine oil guage. I'd like to have one, so I can know if I'm running low, or if the garage has overfilled it - without having to open the bonnet and use the dipstick.

And how about a guage for the screenwash?

And how about a guage to tell me the pressures in all the tyres (I gather this is already there on some cars, but it seems a lot more useful than the alloy wheels and CD changers and MP3 sockets that are finding their way into cheap cars.)(Especially for lazy folk lime me who couldn't be bothered to do it manually.)

And how about a guage to tell me the weight of the car, and what pressure I need to inflate the back tyres to if the car is somewhere between normal load and fully laden?

We were clearing out the garage and I came across a couple of plastic petrol cans. Is it ok to store diesel in these? Read more

Thanks RF.

EEC rules? Bah!! Seeing as I have a French car, I shall do as the French do - ignore them.

I was tempted enough to enquire of Motorpoint about their Honda Accord 2.0 and 2.4 Executive cars, which they offer at considerably below the UK dealer price. But getting acurate, detailed specs eventually put me off. The clincher was the information that apparently not even the 2.4 Executive Auto has factory Sat Nav fitted.

I'd have expected this to be factory fitted to every Accord off the line with this model badge. Is this a usual omission ?

Hi Folks,

I knew that Renault V6s needed a cam belt change at 72000 miles but didn't realise that it was 72000 miles or 5 years whichever was soonest.

The cambelt change at a Renault Main Dealer is very expensive! I know the risks of not doing it but, in reality, for a low mileage car what are the chances of there being a problem at 5 years?

Cheers,

Try Frank Suarez in Clapham - 020 7627 1108. Run by a bloke called Roy and they specialise in all kinds of Renaults. Last time I used him (when I had a Renault) was 2 years ago and his hourly rate was £40 + VAT. It's also convenient for Clapham North tube, so if you work in the city or central London you can drop it off there before work and pick it up afterwards. He's also pretty friendly.

I recently bought an imported Mazda6. I am very pleased with both the car and the deal I got.

However, it has a radio straight out of ther 1970s. The FM band only goes up to 90, there is no station identification/tracking (which means I have to retune every few miles along the road). The CD player is great with a 6 disc capacity built into the dashboard.

Anyone who knows the Mazda range knows that the radio controls are part of the dashboard and the display is part of the heater display.

So, anyone got any ideas about companies who could offer an upgrade?

Please help a Radio 4 Addict.

If this is a JDM car then presumably it has to go through ESVA? Has this been done? I'd be interested to know, or is there a way around ESVA?

I am trying to find contact details for a senior manager for Pentagon Vauxhall as I have a dispute with Masterfit in the deleted branch. The receptionist would not put me further than the service centre manager. Does anyone happen to know who I can escalate this issue to? It is regarding a warranty issue ... they said that certain parts of the car does not come under the 3 year warranty - but could not provide documentation for this exclusion... I am sure this is not a new issue for many here.

Thanks in advance.

Loooks like its worth a try with Trevor Reeve at the Derby branch. Thanks.

The problem is really to do with the passenger door of a 3 door Corsa. It has never shut properly - looks ok after shutting it, but the sound of it closing clearly is not right and you can see it bouncing out a split second after shutting ... if that makes sense. Wife took it back within its first year and got fobbed off saying they adjusted it (she did not witness this) and it should be ok after a few months use as the car is still new and not "worn in" yet. NOw, near the end of its 3 year warranty, problem is still there and they refused to look at it for free. Their computer did not have record of first visit about this problem. They want £55 to look (not fix) at a problem which they never fixed in the first place, and is now blaming wear and tear which is "not covered by 3 year warranty". Funny how the same problem goes from being caused by "the car being too new" to "wear & tear". Vauxhall in Luton does not want to know saying "dealer's prerogative to charge inspection fee".
