Old Banger

The old Cavalier goes "wumwumwumwum" on right-hand bends, but not left. I assume it's something to do with a wheel bearing. Is this a correct assumption? Are they rollers, or balls, if so? Is it a real bind to fix? If I don't fix it, is the wheel likely to fall off? Read more

It's all about preparation and experience, really. The main thing I attend to is making sure that the new bearing is undamaged and the shaft/housing is perfectly clean and has no burrs or other damage anywhere. Correct alignment of the bearind, then pressure on the inner or outer race from hammer/press wieled in a suitable manner does the trick.

I am lucky, I have access to both hydraulic and fly presses.

What is the new ford advert trying to tell us. If you test drive a ford you lose the power of speach. Read more

Yes, my manager married someone who came into buy a car, and one of my colleagues was seeing one of his customers, needless to say her Ka was delivered in better condition than any other one that month, fully Supaguarded, fitted mats etc. etc. :-)

Don't think any of them ever took a "test drive" in the woods like on the advert though!

I want to change our car, it's a t reg nissan primera gx estate, 99,000 miles broke air con and a dent on offside passenger door which needs banging out and respraying.
Is it worth me fixing the faults before trading it in or going to somwhere that will give you £1500 minimum trade in, or taking it to auction.
Also has anybody bought from cargiant in london? Read more

Unless it's a small, independent auction, you'll waste your time & £$£$.

The amount you end up with after charges, will be next to nothing.

Best e bay it, or if your local paper has advertise till sold, for a low amount, don't get led into lots adverts, costing £30 this week & next week & ....

Car Giant will sell you a stright forward enough deal, at a fair (ish) price.

If you need finance, it's well worth comparing the dealers package, to a personal loan - remember you have greaster consumer rights, if the car & loan come from the same place!

Warranties can be purchased monthly, as on going cost - check link on this site for WarrantyDirect.

I've only posted a couple of times so please forgive me if I miss anything out.

I've got a slight problem with my Polo saloon tdi 90 (non-pump duse).

The engine runs fine, but seems to seriously lose power above 4000rpm, struggling to hit the redline, even in 2nd.

I haven't noticed this before, but was giving the car a bit of a workout since I normally never need to rev it above 3500 and it's been lying for 2 weeks whilst we've been on holiday.

It does have a tuning box on it, and that will be my first port of call by removing it and repeating the experiment, but if it's not that, any other suggestions?

There doesn't seem to be any additional smoke at that level, but the power definitely falls away.

Thanks for any advice.

Neil.

I don't think I ever got to the redline in my 306TD. Different story after switching back to a petrol car mind!

Getting a cheap tiny car to give the wife another (last?) chance to get through her test with.
I've got full no claims, and she's been a named driver for 4 years with a provisional licence, on my existing car.
Trying to minimise all costs, I want the tiddler to be insured absolutely as cheap as possible (not bothered about more than 3PO).

Before I speak to some insurers, does anybody have any preliminary advice on the pros/cons of:
1. Register keepership in her name rather than mine (e.g. can I then drive it on my existing insurance with the 'not owned by me' clause, and is my own record better protected if she has a bump?)
2. Me insure it (with zero NCD) with her as a named driver, or she insure it herself?
3. Enquire further about some "mirrored NCD on a 2nd car" I've seen mentioned

Insurances companies are not that bothered about the infinite detail of which spouse is the main user. They will almost certainly rate it on the worse risk, whover you nominate as the main user.

Also, if you state that the main driver is someone with no full licence and only 4 years learner experience, and then the main driver turns out to be someone with a full licence and 10 years experience, then the insurers have no room to manouver. Failing to disclose an improvement in a risk profile might be dumb, but its not against the rules.

To get blinking minded or difficult about a non-disclosure an insurer has to show that had they known that fact then it woudl have changed how they dealt with the risk in terms of premium, excess, Ts&Cs including restrictions or even in acceptance of the risk. An improvement in the risk (licenced and experienced versus not) would never fulfil those criteria.

The commuting does throw a slightly different spin into it. Again rarely a coverage issue since most insurers will allow to and from for either spouse. However, it does cast a sufficient shadow on how the vehicle will be used that I would be very sure to disclose it.

And as I always say, if its non-standard, do it in writing.

Again, doing the insurance in your name will give you the best chance of the best introductory discount, naming your wife as the main user will, with many insurers, not harm your intro discount and although it will be rated on her, it probably isn't that much more than rating it on you - something like 10% for the lack of UK Full licence.

These days its very relaxed (comapratively) when talking of spouses. It is quite different for friends, parents & children and other relatives.

THe intention of "main driver" is to identify who is usually driving the vehicle. Now, whether that should be judged by miles or hours is a difficult point. Its usually clear, but if in doubt always tell the whole situation.

Would be grateful for any ideas/help...
I have a 1993 Carlton 2.0 CDX on 110k which has given me trouble-free service for the past 36k.
Lately it has started to stall after being fully warmed-up then parked for a while. The car restarts (sometimes needing several attempts) but when drive or reverse are engaged the revs dip and it stalls, it is OK if slight throttle is kept on for a while or I am able to engage drive with some throttle and "bounce" away.
This never happens when cold or if the engine is switched off for just a few minutes, only when left for 20 mins- 1 hour or so.
It has good plugs, recent change of air filter and all fluids changed recently.
Could it require a new fuel filter which hasn't been done since I've had it.
Also I want to replace the distributor cap but it looks to be a nightmare job being hard up against the bulkhead. Surely I don't have to remove the cylinder head to do this??

I had a similar prob on a GSI 3000 and it turned out to be the lambada sensor on the exhaust, you can check it by trying to hold the revs at 2000,3000 if its faulty it should dip and rise instead of holding steady.

I am need to park my car at Manchester Airport for 10 days in october, however I am wary of these off site take your keys compounds,as I do not want my car scratched etc.
I saw a well known compound yesterday there and well the cars were packed so tight it looked a nightmare--bumper to bumper and less than 12 inch door to door.
Has any one any recommendations or suggestions.
