This morning my wife had a puncture on the Golf (03), rang VW on call at 08.10 firstly they said the cover had ran out in March 04,it had not as I had payed for two years back in march 04. Operator said he will give her a ring back in 2 minutes so he could confirm we had cover, which he did, he then said they had had problems with people re-newing for two years, the computer did`nt register this renewel he said. So now the tow truck was on its way to my wife by herself in a layby in the middle of no-where, said it would be within the hour, TWO hours later the van turned up and dealt with the problem. Seems all is not well at Volkswagen from sales, after sales to recovery. If you have renewed for two years I recommened you check your cover. I have a 51 plate Picasso with 40k on it. When it starts from cold, it has a sort of scrapy-rattly sound, which I've taken to be a bit of heat shield vibrating. But someone has suggested it might be a tensioner bearing. Does that sound plausible? How can I diagnose this?
TIA
John

My partner has a PCP on her Daewoo. I've worked out that after 31 months she will have paid half and can walk away. As this is the option we wish to pursue:
1) Do we just turn up at the original dealer, hand over the keys and walk away?
2) If the original dealer no longer exists what do we do?
3) How will two small scratches on the right rear wheel arch affect the handback? Should we get them repaired?
Since I've never had a PCP I'm unsure of the exact procedures involved. Previously my partner just renewed her plan (as the dealers would like you to do).

If you are handing back under a PCP scheme the finance company should send you a comprehensive pack detailing the sort of damage they accept as being normal wear and tear. Mercedes provided us with tapes and other measuring devices so any damage could be assessed by us as whether it was acceptable. Our smart had the usual stone chips to the front, the odd chip on the windscreen and the rear plastic cabrio window was scratched. I spent half a day giving a good clean and polish inside and out and the car was accepted without a problem. Give the scracthed a T cut and polish before spending money.
my mate has a F reg citroen AX and the petrol gauge is not working.
where can he begin to check where the fault lies?
i'm thinking along the lines of checking the wiring between the gauge and the tank, but could it be something as simple as a blown fuse?
Thanks Read more
just spoken to him and the gauge has started working all of a sudden, i'm guessing loose connection at one end.
Dunno about temp gauge but dash still not lighting up but thats not a real problem, if the bulbs need replacing then he can check the input to the gauge.
cheers
Our only gripe against my wife's Focus Chic 1.6 is the degree of road noise; we've now reached the stage for its first tyre change, so maybe the opportunity has come to do something about it. The current tyres are Pirelli P6000s (195/60 R15)which I believe were supplied on the car as new. Any suggestions for a quieter tyre [and would handling be compromised?] would be very welcome. Hear, Hear! I'll second johnsnc comments; I've replaced many, many sets of tyres on my company and family cars (mostly, but not exclusively, Michelins and VAG motors) over the last 350K+/12 years miles and noise levels get worse as tread depth reduces (though you don't notice it as is a gradual process). Also, tyres can wear out of shape/wear unevenly, (can be tyre or car specific; Golf MkIV rears esp., a problem because they last for ever - 60k+) causing noise problems
I took ownership of a 04 registered Vectra Sri in March.I noticed early on that the screen on the computer display had a "Hot-spot".The dealer agreed and ordered a new one under Warranty. As I drove the car out of the garage, after the repair, I tried setting up the computer, only to find that it didn't have any multi-function options i.e average distance, mpg etc.It was a basic screen only showing the radio station, temp etc. The dealer ordered another and it was the exact same. They said they used the part number off of my original unit and Vauxhall were supplying the wrong ones.I then got my original refitted to the car.I was phoned some 10 days later and told that all units are the same and have to be programmed to the car????? So, I became the Guinea Pig.Guess what?? The exact same. This has now dragged on for around 8 weeks. The Dealer is no further forward and says that it is now at Opel to be resolved as they can't get to the bottom of it.It seems simple to me,but am I expecting too much. Has anyone else had this problem?? Read more

I am not that familiar with the PSA diesels but on the Renault dCi engines the EGR valve is crucial to maintaining a constant engine temperature. Without it you could cause the engine to overheat and damage the turbo.
I am sure someone with more specific Peugeot knowledge will confirm/deny this.
For a while now i have been chewing on getting a small compressor for home use.
I plan to use it for mainly the car but also maybe spraying the garden shed , fence etc.
What should i look for IE makes? ..size etc...i was thinking maybe something in the 2 to 3 hundred range.(pounds)
Also is there much maintenance involved in looking after one?

I bought a small one for £70 and have found it immensely useful for spraying and powering a nut runner and air hammer. The bigger the tank the better but, unless you are going to keep it stationary in a garage, you will need to balance size with portability.Air displacement is also important. If your spraygun takes more air than the compressor puts out you will be waiting for the tank to fill up again on large panels.Machine Mart do a good range starting at £82:19.Buy a decent airline, the cheap coily things that come with them air a pain.I also bought a filter/water trap, essential for spraying to prevent water getting into the airline.Maintainence is simple, check oil level(unless it is oiless)clean the airfilter and drain water from the reciever(tank).
Hi all,
I am new to his forum. I have bought an Toyota 1999 model. I was looking for some decent garage for sevicing and the MOT which is expiring next week. I live in Lewisham area in London (south east).
Can anyone recommend any garage which I can use which is both reliable and cheap as well. I know going to the delear can be quite expensive.
And what would be the approximate expenditure,. The car runs perfectly fine, n no problems at all.
Many thanks.

First of all the car is a Rover 200 1.4 16v V-Reg.
This has been an on-going problem since before last christmas and I am totally stumped.
The problem is as follows:
- Car starts fine and idles ok for about 10-20 secs
- After this time engine goes 'chuggy' and unsmooth idle, also feels like it could cut out sometimes.
- If I go to drive off when this is happening the engine is reluctant to rev and have to give it a bit to drive off, and when I do drive off it's like the thing is running on kangaroo petrol.
- Problem still there when engine warm but to lesser extent.
- Car will run ok has no problem accelerating, although initial acceleration in any gear can be a bit jumpy.
I have changed the following:
- Fuel Filter
- HT Leads
- Distributor Cap
- Rotor Arm
- Ignition Coil
- Spark Plugs (correctly gapped)
- Engine Flush
- Oil and Filter change (Wynn?s Valve/Hydraulic Tappet Cleaner added)
- Air Filter change
- T4 Diagnostic carried out, no fault found
- Forte fuel treatment used
- Coolant Temperature Sensor
As you can see where do I go next?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

You may be able to remove the wheel nuts after the tyre is punctured, but sometimes the alloy wheel sticks to the hub and is very difficult to remove, so my wife would still not be able to change the wheel and as far as I am concerned, stay in the car with the doors locked, because there are to many nutters around these days.
