I am not that familiar with the PSA diesels but on the Renault dCi engines the EGR valve is crucial to maintaining a constant engine temperature. Without it you could cause the engine to overheat and damage the turbo.
I am sure someone with more specific Peugeot knowledge will confirm/deny this.
