A friend of mine has got a 98 Escort TD,and it looks like the pipe from the air intake,to the turbo has split.
He therefore needs a new one asap, and has been quoted silly money from Ford.(Surprise.)
So if anyone can please supply me with a name and number, like yesterday, then I can point him in the right direction. Read more
Can anybody recomend a good high interest building society account as I want to start saving for a new autobox for my 270CDI which I would imagine will be around 3K!
My reason being that, Mercedes inform me that the fluid doesn't need changing, never ever, and, will not entertain doing a change for me. I know therefore, that the box will cease to exist at around 100,000 miles.
Would anybody know if it's possible to change the fluid without major work or should I just start saving! Read more
Has anyone else got this engine, maybe in a Renault or Nissan Micra? When I bought mine I was averaging 49mpg, it was quite an event getting it to 50mpg. Now after almost 12000 miles and an oil change, it is averaging 56mpg. I have done the brim to brim checks and it equates accurately with the digital display. My driving style and journeys are the same and I use the same brands of diesel. So I am not sure why it has increased. Not complaining though!
I was pleased with 49mpg but 56mpg is a real treat. What do you get in yours? Read more
When I had a Clio dci from new, I regularly averaged in the high fifties/low sixties mpg, without really trying. On the few occasions I played the "how (s)low can you go" game, the trip meter would indicate that I had breached the 70 mpg mark. Not much fun doing that though ...

The never ending saga continues with this car!
We paid nearly £400 to get it through the MOT just two weeks ago and now it turns out the head gasket has gone :o(
Needless to say, we're a tad short on funds at the moment so do you reckon it would be OK to run it for a little while longer as it is?

If the Golf has a 1.3 engine, then I would almost bet my life the gasket has corroded through between No 1 and 2 cylinders. It's some time since I worked on a VW but I seem to remember that some engines had 'Use Once' stretch bolts, so if you slacken them, you will have to replace them. Maybe wrong though, as I say it's been a good few years.
Headstar, do you live near Bath? If so I could have a quick look at it for you.
i want to put my 7" screen into my headrest is this a easy thing to do myself or would i have to send it off to be taylor done. i need both headrests doing. if i could do it then how do i... please help if you can... Read more
We bought a 9" screen Venturer from Argos for £165 and find that fixing that between the front seats gives both kids a good view. It also means its not "in thier face2 in event of a shunt. Its a very neat unit - much like a small laptop and easily removed or installed in less than a minute. The dual screen ones I looked at all seemed to have relatively bulky main units and looked like they had to be semi-permanently installed so attracting theft when parked up. Incidentally they are great for passing long journeys in harmony, my teenagers love it.
I have an Alfa Romeo 146 Twin Spark 16V and the immobiliser has kicked in. Does anybody know how to overide this so I can get it started. All I have is the Red key and I have no codes or manuals
If there is a way I can do it by remving the battery can someone please let me know.
Your help will be appreciated Read more

Does anyone know how I can get hold of an exploded diagram of the engine in my 96 406 1.9td. Thanks. Read more
Actually, don't, it's in my profile.
ive bought a drive shaft for my 1.2 1998 punto.if i take the old one back (the same as the new one)ill get back £25.
the problem is the new one has the cup fitted that goes into the gearbox.in the haynes manual there is no mention of removing the cup from the gearbox.i would like to remove the cup but cant work out how to.
i could just cut the tie on the boot to remove the tripod joint, but the new one is the complete unit into the gearbox.

Hi all unlucky Vauxhall vectra owners!
I have a 1998 2.0 dtl diesel estate which suffers from an intermittant ecu fault - which quite often happens at 70 mph on the motorway! Randomly the ecu light comes on and revs die to 1000 rpm -the car slows rappidly as it is obviously impossible to drive like this.By getting onto the hard shoulder stopping and turning engine off for a minute before restarting where by the fault has cleared.I have had the computer red on several occasions and the fault is always stored as throttle position sensor even though on digital readout the pedal seems to work fine.
This car has suffered from all the usual faults with this model i.e. injector seals and mass air flow sensor but when enquiring about a new throttle position sensor from the local vauxhall dealership they say they have never supplied one before!
Can anybody please help me before I shell out the £270 for a new sensor

The years must be going by fast when a Vauxhall parts supplier lists no catalogue parts for the Cavalier! Ho Hum. Back to Autovaux and Vauxhall Heritage.
Hi there,
I've got a 3 1/2 year old Renault Megane Scenic which has developed a small fault.
The dash clock display has suddenly gone dark on the right hand side as if the bulb behind it has blown.
I called Renault, and they advised me that the whole of the Dash board will have to come off to replace this one bulb and it wouldn't be worth the cost to do this.
Any ideas if this is something I could change myself if the dash doesn't have to be removed or am I going to have to bite the bullet with this one?.
I know it's trivial, but the new owner (G/F) wants everything working :o)
Thanks Read more
I doubt the whole of the dash has to come out, more likely just the dash top which is a peice of cake to remove. undo the screws located at either end of the upper dash(doors open and they are visible)and remove the two speaker grills located each end and to the rear of the dash, and remove the two screws a careful but firm pull upwards and toward you and the whole upper dash section will slide away revealing the clock display held in place with another couple of screws remove turn the clock unit over a a pair of pliers can be used to twist out the old bulb actually very simple, however this can vary with some models so if in doubt dont attempt it youself if you do decide to get a garage to do this for you it should only take about 15 to 20 minutes.

Yes, the older boxes are pretty crude (but effective and robust). They are vacuum controlled and all the piping etc has to be in tip-top condition. I think you are talking about the vacuum modulator. Yes, you could try replacing it - if it has gone weak or leaky then you will get hard shifting. Might well be worth replacing.
