Oh look, Volume II already. Volume I is here;

================================================================
For the continued discussion of what, I have no doubt, will be a long-running topic.

As is our way with such things, each thread will be allowed to run to 100 notes at which point it will be closed, locked and restarted.

No previous volumes will be deleted and pointers to them will always exist in the current thread; this was always intended to remove the need for endless repetition but has always curiously failed to stop it occurring.

I see no reason why you should pursue a different path this time.

If if seems like a good idea later on, it may well be that this thread will be sub-divided. Until such time if you're looking for a thread on the subject that you think you've lost, here would almost certainly be the best place to start.

Equally, anything not on topic will be removed.

You may find it useful to reply to this note each time you start a slightly different slant with perhaps a different heading. However, that's mostly up to you because I'm quite sure I'm not going to be losing any sleep over its organisation.

Enjoy. Read more

Basically, this scheme takes us back to the late 1800's,when your labourers lived within walking or cycling distance of their work, with only the well paid able to commute by train to the cities.
On a social scale the upheaval doesn't bear thinking about.

1) So the French can drive for free on our roads?

2) Civil liberties?

3) I can't believe that the government will not vary the cost depending on how "green" your car is....although I do like the simplicity of the idea if not point 1 and 2.

I've just had the cam belt done on my 1996 Peugeot 306 turbo-diesel (155k miles). The chap who did the work tells me that my engine is "breathing" oil from the crankcase vent (I pulled one of the hoses off the intercooler and can see that the inside is wet with oil). What is the cause of this sort of problem? Worn rings? The car doesn't appear to use significant amounts of oil, nor is there any significant smoking from the exhaust, other than on cold starting (and even then it smells of diesel, not burning engine oil). His advice was to leave it be and only go trying to fix it if it fails the MoT (the car only cost me £400, so I really don't want to go throwing money at it).

However, I notice that there is a round device, some sort of valve I think, located on the front of the intercooler. Two hoses connect to it - one goes to the oil filler neck, the other to the air intake ducting to the turbo. Anyone know what this device is/does, and whether a failure here might account for excessive oil getting into the air intake? Read more

Thanks for those reassuring replies.

Forum Honda Ads
chuck

I'm a fan of Honda cars; I think they offer a excellent blend of value, performance, ride/handling with fantastic reliabilty. In most other countries they are seen as sporty cars, but here in the UK they are viewed as 'blue-rinse brigade' cars. The obvious reason for this is the appalling adverts! The one excellent ad, for the New Honda Accord, was only shown a few times. I only ever saw it once, during the football match break. They should get rid of their Marketing people and hire the same firms as the Germans, the BMW Martketing people in particular do amazing ads. Does anyone agree? Read more

Glaikit Wee Scunner {P}

Round here the three door Civic is a popular chav's car, so no real blue-rinse image there then.
Unless they have been borrowed from Granny.

On the 406, if you have an aftermarket stereo and you remove the display, theres a small screw type switch in the side, if you adjust this to position 2 the display changes to MPG and outside temp.
Ive done this but the MPG counter remains - - - - blank like that. Anyone know how to get it working? Read more

My son is a student in Liverpool and he has recently bought a small car with steel wheels and factory fit wheel trims. Recently when I went to visit him, I noticed that his his rear offside wheel trim was missing, he had no recollection of kerbing the car or losing it. On looking at cars in Liverpool, we noticed that the majority of cars with steel wheels and trims have one wheel trim missing.

Is it a new craze for collecting one of each type of wheel trim or is it purely done out of mischief?

I've seen sets of 4 used wheel trims on sale at a sunday car boot sale, funny that all 4 of my mother in laws wheel trims were stolen on a friday night, together with all trims from at least 10 other cars from a village within 10 miles of the car boot sale site. Read more

I recently had my front tyres renewed on my Ka, depite one of the trims was already damaged they fitted back on properly & still intact!

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

Xileno {P}

Another hard up friend of mine needs to replace their old Nissan and he was wondering what an Escort estate would be like. Is this a good reliable workhorse like the Sierra I once drove? I would imagine servicing and repairs will be reasonable.
Xileno has been tasked with finding one; and probably paying for it as well...

Anyone running one now?

Agree with David but I would ask you are a little careful to listen for a tappety noise. I understand these use the CVH? engines which, when they tap, means something bad...

...or so I picked up when eavesdropping in on a conversation.

I am looking at a 12 month old RX8, 16000 km's (I'm in Australia). It has been serviced on schedule very 6 months.

Reading the forums here I see that the engine has a few particular requiements, short runs etc.

Is there anything that can be done, in case the engine has been mistreated? It doesn't show any problems at the moment. Read more
