Question Jaguar Autobox
Gazza

Further to the Merc Autobox thread, I am interested in the engineering issues with the Jaguar's auto-boxes (I have always love Jags). My understanding is that the 4-speed mechnical-hydralic autobox fitted to the 94-97 straight-six engines XJ6 were very reliable. What's people's view on these 4-speed box?

Also, What's the verdict on the 5-speed electronic autoboxes fitted to 97-on XJ8 and the 5-speed box fitted to the S-Type? Is the S-type box the same as the XJ8?

There are A LOT of autobox failures with regards to S-Type autobox on CarSurvey but not that many failure on XJ8.

Many thanks, Gazza Read more

I am looking to replace the discs/pads on my 1995 Fiesta, the first set of Mintex discs I bought had no screw hole to secure them to the strut. These were replaced but it seems that the discs on the car are held on by a big centre nut. I thought the discs were just held on by the wheel nuts and should just tap out. Is this correct? Thanks Steveo, I'll give that go.

Just for interest.
I've just got my renewal from MoreThan and there is a little booklet of changes from last year.

Good point - they will mirror NCD to another vehicle policy with them - and £35 off as new business discount. so up to 65% NCD for your weekend toy. (but no imports or modifications).

Bad Point - If you drop insurance, they will only give you six months gap before dropping your NCD, whereas before I think it was 2 years.

Bad point - compulsary excess up to £350

p.s. their website quotes playing up at the moment, not offering protected/'NCB for life' option.

The drivers seat in my 2001 VW Passat has started to creak, I suspect something needs tightening/adjusting.

Has anyone got an expolded diagram of the seat construction so I can identify components that could need tightening or work out how it goes together.

Also has anyone tried to take the seat out or taken it to the point that it tilts so the underside is visible, I can't see how it comes off the runners but it looks like it might tilt upwards if certain components are undone.

suggestions please gents

as always

Can't help sorry Mark but be careful of the airbag if it has one!

I gave up trying to stop the creaks on my 02 Passat a while back, particularly the dash.

Just done the obligatory Costco run and spotted Mobil 1 0w/40 @ £23.37 don't know if that's a good price for any of you who might be interested.

Also checked out the details of the Chevron Supreme fully synthetic priced at £11.73 inc Vat. The spec. is:

5W/40
API:SL/CF
ACEA:A3/B3

Other details:

VW 502.00/505.00
MB 229.1
BMW Longlife -
98 Porsche

Don't know (or really care) what any of that means but hoping the above may be of some interest to someone.

No - the Chevron Supreme is as detailed in my original post - I copied the details direct from the container.

As for the question as to whether it's any good, that's probably a question for Oilman to answer.

I have been offered a 4 month old focus 1.6 zetec climate in moondust silver for £9400 this is an 05 car on a 54 plate with about 3k on it.My question is is this an ok deal and is an 05 54 plate worth more than an 04 54 plate.Your help would be greatly appreciated as I have researched this on the web but just ended up more confused than when I started. Many thanks in advance. Read more

It's about £1000 overpriced. You shouldn't have any problem finding 1.6 Zetec on 54 plate with less than 10k on the clock for £8000-8500

Recently the rear windscreen wiper stopped working on my Fiat Marea Weekend. Once I had removed the motor it became apparent that the spindle was getting rusted up and causing friction that was too great for the motor to overcome. I tried using 3in1 oil and it did improve, but did not solve the problem. The answer was really simple, remove the wiper blade holder from the motor spindle. Then I drove arround for a couple of weeks with the rear wiper left on. Now the blade has been refitted, the wiper operates as if it was new!

Do you have any other really useful simple tips you can pass on. Read more

Glad your cure worked, but I'd have used a product called EasyGrease (there's also a Slick equivalent aerosol) rather than 3-in-1, WD40 or similar as they are too thin to remain in situ.

EasyGrease or the more readily available Slick version provides the necessary lubrication, but is "dry" and therefore doesn't soil clothes etc. Both cost between £1.50 and £2 for a large aerosol.

I use it for car door and bootlid locks, handles and hinge mechanisms, throttle springs and similar moving parts, normally renewing the application every three months or so.

A similar procedure is used for all the locks and moving parts on my property's double-glazed doors and windows' locks and moving parts - again the further benefit is that clothes or hands are not soiled if accidentally caught.

I was filling my car at a Shell station yesterday when I noticed a home-made notice stuck on the pump (and also on all the other pumps). It said that there had been a delivery of fuel to that station which did not conform to the relevant British Standard and had an RON rating between 93.7 and 95 (I think 95 is the norm for unleaded). It went on to reassure customers that it would not harm their cars and there was no risk involved. It also recommended Optimax to customers with high performance engines.

I was curious to know if anyone else had encountered this elsewhere(the filling staion is in deleted, presumably the bad batch of fuel came from deleted). Also, would this have any adverse or noticeable effect on a car? It did also wonder what sort of quality control system picked this up after it had left the refinery rather than before.

I think that shell were being honest and admitting it when others would keep quiet. On several occasions my car has pinked after filling up and I then have to top up with super unleaded to stop it pinking.

Hi,

Wondering here is anyone has got or experience of a Subaru Forester.

Possibly looking at a Jap import one, with 65K on the clock in superb condition. Seems to fit the bill with having 2 kids and a dog, as has a large boot etc. My only concern though it that well, its going to be damn quick.

Any experiences or advice appreicated

You can get the mileage when it was sold in Japan via BIMTA - costs about £25 I think.

Anyway, you're a braver man than I am - especially at £3k.

Best of luck with it.

I have a Y reg 1.4s Civic The handbook says the cambelt needs changing at 72000 miles which seems a lot to me as I understand they can fail well before that. Does anyone have any experience of these engines and the cambelt survival rate ?
Thanks
