[snip] I removed the bits of this note which were pointless, troll-like, and only written to be inflammatory. I then removed the other notes in the thread which were biting on the bait.

I'm having no end of bother getting the steering lock off with either one of my two keys. Rather than change the lock, which would probably outweigh the value of the car, is there a way of removing/disabling the steering lock ? I always put a crook lock on it anyway so I'm not too bothered about the security issue. Read more
I just had the very same problem with my 1995 Fiesta (see similar post somewhere else on here). I took it to my mechanic who said it was the tumblers? inside the ignition barrel which were worn. They were replaced for £35 and its absolutely fine now. Better than it has ever been and comes off without any trouble.
Hope you manage to get yours sorted
when driving in my volvo s60 auto when the gear flicks from 2 to 3 there is a loss of power for about a second and the revs go up high, like the car is in neutral and the pedal is bieng pressed,
the revs go upto like the 3 mark on the counter
is this gonna become a problem or should i not worry? Read more
Well, its flaring a bit isn't it. Not badly, but ideally the changes should be crisp with the rev counter needle falling swiftly as the next gear is engaged - not rising-falling. You are getting some slipping in the box. Slipping = heat & wear - not good. Its not going to go bang overnight, but in the long term its not good for the 'box.
We have just come across Silverdale Cars advertising and want to buy a used Mondeo. Did anyone, particularly 'Mister T'have a view on the dealer? Webmaster - Honest John, can you e mail him to ask for his view if he isn't a regular contributor???
They seem to have what we want but we'd like an opinion.
Many thanks Read more
Many thanks for your opinion Mister T - it's reassuring that you've been happy with your dealings with the company. We'll certainly take a look at what's on offer with the company now.
Also very grateful to backroom moderator NO Do$h for your very prompt help in getting advice. A great site. Thanks again
Over the past few days i've seen a few new model cars and here are my thoughts.
New Passat - not really fussed either way, didn't really grab me but didn't make me want to grab the sick bucker.
Nissan Murano - I like it...... ALOT!
Suzuki Swift - Only a quick glimpse as one went the other way but it looked pretty enough.
Seat Toledo - Looked like the love child of an original Merc A Class and a Renault Vel Satis. Not a good combination.
Has anyone else seen anything new recently? Read more
>You can't argue with that burnt orangy type colour though!
Nice to hear that orange is back. I haven't seen cars in it since the 1970's. Can we get it with tartan upholstery?
There seem to be some attractive personal lease schemes about. I am either too lazy to do the math, or ignorant of the pitfalls, but am I missing a trick by buying my car, letting it depreciate then stump up more cash for another one?
I only do about 6K miles per annum and that includes a couple of thousand on summer hols in France. I like a nice comfy and fairly rapid family job, nothing cheap and cheerful.
Has anyone out there been energetic enough to do the math and have enough of a Tefal head to know the pitfalls or gains?
Would be interested to know. Read more
"it's miles cheaper than chasing women."
-- good point, stick with the cars !!!
Well, I've got my 306 DTurbo running again after an engine transplant (I dont ever want to have to do that again!) but I have a problem with a noticeable amount of diesel smoke when its off boost. The diesel pump I am using is a Lucas off my old dead engine which I know is fine. I have played around with rotating the pump one way then the other to alter the timing in small increments but cant seem to find a happy compromise. I have come to the conclusion that I need to have it timed properly.
I went into my Pug dealer to ask how much they wanted, and after 5 mins of faffing around in the workshop, I got an answer - "thats a very complicated proceedure sir, even the technicians are scared to touch them" and he then priced himself out of a job by quoting 4 hours @ £69 ph! Yeah righto.
Anyway, I've searched the web with little success, what I am after is a peugeot specialist in Kent who will be able to do this job for me.
Does anyone have any reccomendations? or do you happen to have the 'Pug special tool' for sale???
Cheers

I can't recommend anyone in your area but if you come over to www.psooc.co.uk i'm sure a local member can recommend someone for you.
Also try www.dervdoctor.co.uk - he's a pug diesel guru.
Hi
Does anyone know who makes the TD4 engine in the new freelanders. Was having a debate at work as someone has just bought one and they were told it was a BMW unit....I thought it was a Rover L series...Are we both wrong??/

Does any one who deals with a/c on Fords, know the oil grade that ford spec "WSH-MIC231-B" relates to?
Also does any one know what the oil spec is for a seat Alambra?

A tale of three Renaults actually
Renault 1, is my Laguna.
Its been acting the goat lately. Slightly overdue for its 36k
Miles service, the clutch pedal started to loose feel. And sticking down. And dragging
In the morning. And finally the clutch would bite about 3 mm off the floor when cold.
Checking on technical reveals its probably the master cylinder. So I phone up and I say "It needs 36k miles service, and the clutch master cylinder is going and will need
replacing". All gets written down.
Car goes in the first time and I come to pick it up that evening. "Needs a new master
Cylinder sir." Yes I know that, I told you that, look its written on your booking form there from two weeks ago. "yes sir you were right so we have had to order a new one"
Lord give me strength.
So over two visits a week apart Laguna has had 36k miles service, new wiper blades all round, new clutch master cylinder, new rear brake calliper, pads all round, and as
it has a bent front alloy (n/s/f inner) they dumped a new one in the boot. It needs new rubber all round so it will get used then.
Renault 2 is first courtesy car,
A Modus, A 1.6 auto Modus to be precise. This will be biased, because as you know I am a Renault lover. Its utter carp. What a totally pointless car. I am not small but had Enough head room above me for a top hat. Why?
Minute boot space despite the moving rear seats, horrible to drive, nasty instruments, rotten ride, slug slow & badly matched autobox changing at the wrong time with a neck snapping lurch. The trip computer reveals it has been averaging 27.8mpg.
Renault 3 is second courtesy car
A Scenic. A 1.9 dCi dynamique.
What a joy. I drove one of these on launch day. Its improved since then. Cracking
Piece of kit. Not a rattle or squeak, the lovely dCi feeling less sharp but much smoother in this configuration. The 6 speed box now feels really nice, just a wrist action away from the wheel. Great handling for one so tall, compliant ride to boot.
The hands free card is the way the card system should be, totally user friendly. Reacquainting myself with the electronic parking brake reminding me how well thought out it is.
RFs next wagon I think.
PS I chatted up the service receptionist and she gave me two clips for the goona key card that allows you to hang keys on them?..

In my opinion the problems with the Modus are:
You aren't the only one who isn't impressed. And there may be some you've missed. John Simister, in his comments as a ECOTY judge (see the ECOTY website) says:
"Neat idea, but it doesn't work. The Modus has a happy face and it's pleasing to drive, with a roll-along ride in the old-school French manner. But if you fold the rear seat forward to carry a big load, you have to push the front seats so far forward that the Modus becomes almost undriveable. Someone has slipped up with the packaging here."
