SWMBO is fascinated by the song and singer on the current Peugeot ad (the one where people are apparently ashamed of the car they've got). Final scene where a guy drives into a corn field.

Who's the singer and what's the song please? Read more

A further ad....this one makes me want to punch the living
daylights out of them!!! It's the really smug insufferable young
couple in the insurance ad where he says "Well, look after
the pennies luv" whilst pulling a bunch of flowers off the
roof of his car to give to her, or pulling up
in busy street outside restaurant for lunch. God...I hate them!

Agree with that! there is one ad i really like though but many in BR don't and that's the Bev and Kev saga.. Funny! am i the only one who thinks that?

Does anyone know the law regarding about using/owning a classic/recent replica or ex-police vehicle? Can you drive legally on the road with the full 'jam sandwich', lights (obviously not to be used) and police stickers? Read more

The battenburg design Police Vehicles was designed by the Police Scientific Watchamacallit Branch. They delibrately left it without copyrighting it so that other users could pick it up. There are offences under the RTA of having a motor vehilce with blue lights and sirens etc.

Are there any companies out there that make replacement more generic items to replace parts that manufacturers aren't making any more? The reason I ask is that nissan don't seem to be making the air con pressure switches for my old skyline r32 and I wondered if I could get a more generic one from somewhere as they all do much the same job.....

Test drove a Leon FR tdi 150 today. Like the looks, the reality was somewhat different. It sounded like a tractor on startup, with clouds of blue smoke. Very noisy inside, although this improved slightly as it got warmer. Worst of all, the interior creaked and rattled all over the place. It had a very poor stereo and the seats were very uncomfortable (although I recognise that's a personal thing). Overall, it felt a class below my ZT. Didn't help that the demo I was given had no fuel and was absolutely filthy.
On the way home I called in at the Ford dealer and sat in a ST Tdci. It felt much better built and had a high standard spec. The dealer's trying to find me a demo ("very rare", dealer speak for the boss has gone to lunch in it?) and I'm keen to see if diesels have moved on from the older vw unit. He also promised 'a great deal', although his definition may differ to mine. I've also got those naughty men with hammers in my head shouting "Depreciation...." Read more

MLC, it might be worth getting another one to test-drive from a different dealer - sounds as if the one you drove has been mistreated and is in much worse shape than my 3 year old Leon TDi 110. I've had a small amount of dash squeaking which was permanently cured by some silicone spray on the dash mounting points, but have never seen blue smoke in 53k miles - even when running on derv instead of biodiesel! As for engine noise, I drove a Passat PD 130 a while ago and thought the refinement was pretty good - very comparable to the (several) Rover 75 CDTs I've driven (I reckon when the time comes, one or other of my current cars will eventually be replaced by an MG ZT CDTi). I'd be surprised if there was a significant variance in terms of refinement between the 130 and 150 variants of the Leon.

By the way, I'm not being proud/defensive simply because I own a Leon -I also own a Passat, about which I've voiced plenty of complaints! I genuinely think the Leon is a decent motor, which is why I chose to keep mine long-term rather than carrying out my original plan of selling it after a year for around the price I paid to import it. I reckon it's worth further investigation before being discounted.

Q: Why are cars described as being 'on' a particular plate? eg. "I picked up a cheap Mondeo on a 'P' plate."
How does the registration process work - are new plates issued which then have vehicles assigned to them, or is it the other way round?

Agreed. I can see a case for on-the-spot action, but if
such an extreme mesaure is possible, it should at least be
subject to prompt review by the courts (as happen if someone
is arrested). Reading the Act, this one seems to be
entirely at the discretion of a Constable, with review by the
courts limited to not much more than the sort of grounds
generally available through judicial review.

Stop it, you're frightening me.

Hi,
I have a 1994 Rover 414si, K-series engine, problem is when engine is warm and left for 10 mins. Takes along time before eventually it will start and runs again.
No cold staring problems usually starts first time and runs great!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Greetings, All.

I would like to change the brake fluid on SWMBO's ten year old, very neat and tidy, 31k mile 306 1.8 SR Sedan. The fluid has never before been changed in the car's life, and I'm concerned about shearing bleed nipples like I did Donkey's years ago on my MG Metro when the car was only three years old.

Tips and techniques to avoid this, please?

I don't want to start applying heat from a blow torch, or remove the calipers or drum cylinders from the car to work on a bench.

(labour, fluid, nipples and VAT), getting my Pug Indy to do
it.

With my PUG main dealer charging £25 (all inc.) for a brake fluid change - I'd simply get them to do it because at that sort of price you can't argue. It's like these 'quick oil and filter changes' that the fast fit places seem to be doing. You really can't argue with getting them to do it. Now BMW on the other hand charge £65 for a brake fluid change *GRrR*

No worries - there's never any accounting for what SWMBO will be after next if my experience is anything to go by!

Good luck with whatever you end up with.

I quite like the look of the new Astra, however I dont think that the new model is galvanised. In the brochure it specifies that some panels are made out of zine coated steel but there is no mention of galvanising after construction. I beleive the previous model was fully galvanised, is this a step backwards to the bad old day of rust?? Read more
