I quite like the look of the new Astra, however I dont think that the new model is galvanised. In the brochure it specifies that some panels are made out of zine coated steel but there is no mention of galvanising after construction. I beleive the previous model was fully galvanised, is this a step backwards to the bad old day of rust??

No-one galvanises after construction. Requires dipping into heated bath : lengthy/costly /would distort body panels and leave rough finish which could not be painted. Plus it would take hours to cover and dry off...
All modern cars use zinc coated steel as described by you. And then wax inject vulnerable areas.

For an example of zinc coated steel have a look at the back of most PCs, the grey coloured steel is it. Zinc dipping looks like a crash barrier or a bucket!

Thanks for that, I thought some cars were hot dipped.

I was told, years ago, that when the zinc coated sheets are sheared in the manufacturing process, the zinc is carried round and protects the edge. I wasn't persuaded at the time. Are there any BRs who know the process better?
