Q: Why are cars described as being 'on' a particular plate? eg. "I picked up a cheap Mondeo on a 'P' plate."
How does the registration process work - are new plates issued which then have vehicles assigned to them, or is it the other way round?

I believe that when you first register a vehicle, the DVLA say "Ok Ed, we'll allocate you AB50 XYZ for that car - go get some plates".

I'm sure someone knows the system more intimately though.

Either way round. When I bought my bike the dealer had a big list of registration numbers allocated to him and asked if I prefered any of them.

Most dealers work like martin has explained - we get a list of registrations and just allocate from that list. If the customer requests it they get a choice if not they get the next available one.

The front number plate is on the front, so the car is on the plate rather than the plate being on the car! Just a suggestion.....

That's how I got FRW 500 C. I bet that having the numerals 500 it's classed as a "cherished" number now.

Is there a website explaining the current system?

Not so much how it works, but the explanation as to the first 2 letters. I thought it was regional but locally we get a lot of 'RO' and I can't think of a town starting RO here in the South West. Also OE which my boss has doesn't appear to stand for anything.

Anyone know the answer?

In Germay the first letter(s) denore the nearest town. i.e:- M = Munich, B = Berlin, FR = Frankfurt, etc. Wasn't our designed to be that simple?

Current system uses these

www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/LMTags-identifie...m

Can't see a RO on there. Do you mean old system? (prefix/suffix)

D'oh!!

it is on there.. RO comes from Reading.

OE = Oxford

Thanks Imago,

What makes Reading 'RO' bearing in mind there is no 'O' in Reading and OE for Oxford which, as far as I can work out has no E in it? (I type this before I check out the site so excuse me if I am being stupid..........Glass of Red on the go......)

Ok.. Readings Memory tags (first 2 letters on plates) start with RA then RB RC etc until RY.

The important thing here is to remember on most plates is that it's the first letter ie *R* which identifies the office from whence it came!

O = Oxford

E = Essex (Chelmsford)

A = Anglia (Peterborough or Ipswich)

Ok, Got it now.

What a mess!

Oh well, what can we expect from our 'Leaders'!

According to www.newreg.com SNA 1L was sold at auction and had not previously been issued.
