Hi Back Room,

Not sure who is aware but i have a 1994 Peugeot 306 1.9 diesel non turbo. This car is cheap to run/inusre etc. But being a 10 year old car parts wear out, i have owned this car for 10 months and spent £800 on parts/labour and i only bought it for £1000. The reason i bought a diesel was i had to commute quite a way to work. Since then ive changed jobs and only work 11 miles away, most of that journey is in 5th gear doing about 50-55mph. The service interval on my car is every 6k miles; and i cover 12k miles per year. I was wondering would it be better for me to buy a newer smaller engined petrol which would be nearly as economical and requires less servicing, the fuel would be cheaper and being newer i woulndt need to spend as much on repairs/ parts wearing out. I know this reverts to the old diesel v petrol debate, but considering my circumstances, is it really worth me having a diesel?

Having owned a Fiesta XR2i 16v (Zetec engine), I would defo buy a zetec again, and would probably buy a fiesta 1.25 zetec about a 3/4 year old model, with a few toys such as pas,a/c,rcl... all things my 306 doesnt have!

Any comments would be appreciated.

When is the best time of year 2 polish my car? as its miami blue (the 205 gti blue) comes up brilliant when polished, its a 3 door with the pug 306 gti-6 alloys looks great! and 50 mpg! what more can you ask for!

Just wondered what you think of it as I'm looking at it as a possibility for my next motor. Read more

You got me Vista! Well it looks nearly new...........even if it is the old shape. I love Hondas but the BMW is better all round in every way in my view. My feeling is second hand Hondas are fantastic value. But if you are looking to spend a bit more they are not really quite "special" enough. Also having spent the best part of £20k on the Accord, it will drop like a stone over 3 years.

Many thanks Sid.

I'll take a look at it this weekend.

It's probably a 1hr labour charge at the dealer to change a 20p bulb.

Kevin...

PS. I've seen Chiltern in 'PlayJag' (my SO's description) but I'm in Basingstoke so it would be a bit of a trek.

My 2004 fiesta has done 7000 miles, and when doing the routine checks i noted that the oil and coolant level were approaching min.
I can understand oil levels going down on a new car since it is being run in, and hence i have topped this up. But a low coolant level concerns me slightly. Should i take the car back to ford to have the system pressure checked for leaks, or is it normal for a car to use some coolant (none of my last cars have ever had a drop in coolant level which is why i am asking).
Thanks for any help

Any Ideas what could cause this?

It has happened about once a year from new after twice failing in the first few months and the battery being replaced, but I've never been able to trace why. It's just done it again today. It can flatten overnight, but on checking lights etc. there is no reason for a drain that I can find. - Lights were all switched off for example.
What can fail intermittently or stick and draw current and then be OK for months. Could it be the door lock solenoids or sonething similar? Any other ideas? Anything obvious to check? Read more

Need your advice please - Have recently scrapped my nissan sunny 1.4lx k reg - it was broken into and uneconomical for me to repair and get through mot......however I am now in a pickle...need to find a reliable similar car asap for £800 or under. Not sure where to start - although I have looked at/driven a few at a local garage but none I would be happy parting money for - and lack of transport becomming a problem. Would I be an idiot to buy an ancient (Breg) ford escort - tax mot til June - for sale on my street -for £85 to tide me over and ensure I dont make a rash decision? I don't have any time to look for a replacement at the moment and desperately need to get mobile.....am i going mad? Read more

I know a gentleman who decided he couldn't be bothered with all that registration business, so binned every DVLA letter as it arrived. I was at his house last week when bailiffs called to collect £265 in accumulated costs and charges. Never ignore it.

Question diesel power
itchy

Does diesel go bad in the sense that petrol loses octane, does deisel lose cetane?
Just wondering as a car is getting difficult to start, the engine is all good as are ancilleries. The diesel has been in the tank over 4 months now. Could it just be turning bad? Read more

It may not be such a good idea to run your tank dry.
Any water or 'gunge' in the bottom of the tank will be sucked-in or you may have subsequent problems with air in the fuel system.

Hi. I've just been told by the garage that I woul dbe better off cutting my losses and getting rid of my Peugeot 306 xrdt (96/N) as otherwise I will have to keep throwing money at it with all the problems it has and will develop in the next 6 months.

I would like to get something about the same size or a bit bigger, preferably a turbo diesel or HDI. I've considered another 306, Citroen Xsara, VW Golf sofar but am open to suggestions. I would love something more reliable like a Japanese, but don't know of any good diesels by these manufacturers.

Any ideas on what would offer a reliable car with space and power for this price?

Thanks

don't go for a turbo diesel in this price range - too much money if things go wrong.

don't know anything about the japenese competition but have had both vw and citroen. golf - too clonky, hard suspension and really really crap handling. xsara - poor image and not great build quality with big depreciation.

if you liked your 306 go for another - saw an x reg hdi (110k miles) for £2995 yesterday (trade). find a similar private sale for less and you've got a decent car with miles left in it.

Okay then heres a really simple question for anyone with the necessary knowledge because I can't find a definitive answer on the net.

To cut a long story short I was caught driving a truck that was deemed to be overweight by the officers who stopped me, weighed my truck and were reporting me for the various offences committed. The facts of the case are very complicated and it isn't a straightforward case of being overweight and thats that.

Anyway this all happened over 6 months ago now and from the day I got stopped to this day I have heard nothing about it. I have been expecting some correspondance or a court summons but nothing... So my question is how long do they have to prosecute me for the offences? Is there a cut-off point before which they must take action or am I suppossed to wait indefinately? No offence to anyone but I would prefer replies with actual knowledge rather than just guesses.

Thanks

OK Simon hope this helps.

Section 41B, RT Act 1988 outlines the offence of exceeding weight (axle, gross plated) of goods vehicle contained in Con and Use Regs.

Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 Schedule 2 outlines the penalty as max fine 5,000 pounds. Points and/or discretionary disqualification are not involved. (But there is a power to disqualify under another Act if the Court is so authorised to do so).

Section 6 RT Offenders Act , by the authority under Schedule 1 of same Act, imposes a limitation on proceedings for the offence in that proceedings have to be commenced within 6 months of coming to the notice of the prosecutor, who is not the investigating/reporting officer but higher up the ladder with the task of authorising a prosecution.

No proceedings can be taken where 3 years have elapsed from date of offence.

Proceedings are commenced when an Information is laid - written matter laid before a JP that a person has or is suspected of having commited an offence, a precursor to the issue of a summons. Date Information laid appears on the summons.

If not laid within 6 months of coming to notice of Pros. then proceedings cannot be taken. But if laid within the time scale then a summons can be issued after this time and served with no apparent limit. However if an excessive amount of unjustified delay then a matter for comment and possible infringement on Human Rights as PU states.

Presumably the offence came to light after a Trading Standards/VOSA check. If it is now some 9 months since being stopped consider contacting them to find out what the position is as it is hardly fair to yourself or legal Reg as you cannot formulate your defence not knowing what you have been charged with.

I also note you mention matters are not straightforward to which I hope an indictable offence is not involved as it could affect matters. My information above is on a straightforeward summary offence.

I am surprised that nobody has raised the issue of which cars are equipped with anti knock sensors. My understanding is that this will control the detonation point allowing a wider range of fuels ie 93-98 to be used without experiencing the traditional pinking effect. This will then surely allow higher RON fuels to maximise power output / performance. Hence the mixed opinions on whether performance improvements are noted with Optimax.

The older high (performance) compression cars should also benefit because many were designed in the days of 98 4star? fuel.
