Need your advice please - Have recently scrapped my nissan sunny 1.4lx k reg - it was broken into and uneconomical for me to repair and get through mot......however I am now in a pickle...need to find a reliable similar car asap for £800 or under. Not sure where to start - although I have looked at/driven a few at a local garage but none I would be happy parting money for - and lack of transport becomming a problem. Would I be an idiot to buy an ancient (Breg) ford escort - tax mot til June - for sale on my street -for £85 to tide me over and ensure I dont make a rash decision? I don't have any time to look for a replacement at the moment and desperately need to get mobile.....am i going mad?

Unless I have misread you, 'tax till June' that Escort sounds ideal. If you don't like it by end of Jan - surrender the tax + scrappy gives you a tenner = money back.

cheers - yup it is mot'd and taxed 'til june 05.....think it might need a new battery though but could be ideal to tide me over....

If you know the car and it works how can you go wrong at £85 even if it only lasts until June?
Unless there's something seriously wrong it ought to be cheap/easy to repair too so you might want to keep it longer. It might not have looks and youth on it's side but older cars can be more reliable than flashy young upstarts - A bit like men really :)

A new battery will only cost peanuts for that car as will most other bits and pieces it may need over time. Look at it this way, if it gets nicked/robbed/broken what's your downside?

thank you for reassurance! much appreciated. Kind of flung into this whole thing and feeling rather overwhelmed and skint.

One other thing, servicing that car should be easy for any half decent mechanic so no need to pay top whack for parts and labour. Just make sure it's safe! The MOT doesn't guarantee that. Have a good look at the tyres etc. and on your test drive make sure it steers and stops OK. If you know/trust the vendor that may not be a problem but, if you don't, you could ask a knowledgable friend to take a quick look. There's loads of good people who'll be happy to advise if you post any specific queries over in the technical forum. Best of luck.

here here v.man - make sure its safe !
It wont seem like such a good deal if it hurts you or someone else.

If the sellor's selling it for £85, my view is that the price is not worth his while in deliberately hiding a fault.
Take it our for a drive and have a good look under the bonnet (suspension mounts etc). If it appears to be OK get the cash out.
I don't know where you are in the country but have a look in the Clasifieds section on this site, there were a couple of freebies a while back.

Have you completed the paperwork and registered your car as scrapped. If not you may recieve a fine of £80 almost as much as the escort costs. Fill the form in !!! Regards Peter

it has been sitting on my desk! I will post it toute suite. I hadn't realised the consequences. Thank you.

I know a gentleman who decided he couldn't be bothered with all that registration business, so binned every DVLA letter as it arrived. I was at his house last week when bailiffs called to collect £265 in accumulated costs and charges. Never ignore it.
