Hi backroomers, can anyone offer any suggestions?
Until 2 1/2 years ago, we had always had 2 cars.
At that time we had max NCD on both policies.
We still have max NCD on our current car.
We are now buying a 2nd car again.
Our insurace company says that we will have to start with 0% NCD on this '2nd car'.
As a reult, the quote was twice what I had expected.
I have phoned a few other insurance companies and all say the same - some have quoted even higher.
When we first started running two cars in 1994, this did not happen. I am pretty sure that we were offered a '2nd car insurance policy' with the same NCD as our existing car.
Can anyone suggest the cheapest way to insure our '2nd car' - a £600 1991 Volvo 940 GL estate?

Got myself 03 Mondeo Ghia. Very annoying gong for seatbelt warning is driving me mad. Handbook says it can be disabled by Ford dealer but 25 mls to nearest one. As I'm not totally useless with cars, can anyone tell me how it's done ? Cheers, Bob. Read more
Thanks Quinny100 - just done mine too. All successful, although when I turned on the ign afterwards the fan blower was going flat out and there was no heating/aircon display - but another off/on and restart got it working again. The wonders of computers! The handbook provides details for temporary disablement (buckle and unbuckle 3 times within 3 secs of seatbelt light) but this is obviously quite pointless as it would be quicker to put the thing on in the first place.

My employer has announced today that as xmas day and boxing day falls on Sat / Sun, they will be treating these days as the bank holidays.
Prior to this year's merger, if these days fell at the weekend, then it would be Mon / Tues as the bank holidays, which I believe is what most industries do.
I work for a food retailer.
Can they do this? As I said it was only announced today so haven't had any feedback from Unions etc yet.
Reason I am asking is we will obviously be open on the Mon Tues, previously we would have received a higher rate for working them but this time we won't.
Any advices would be appreciated. Read more
Thanks guys, some different opinions here.
FWIW My Mortgate is fixed at 3.99% until 1st Feb 2005, when I will be free to pay all or some of it off with no penalty. I will probably pay it off anyway come this date as funds permit. I need to speak to my IFA wrt to my options here.
I haven't made any decisions yet. I need to have a good read of your responses this evening.
Thanks again.

\"Spate of conrod failures on 1997-1998 R and S reg 1.9 XUTD diesels; one case of a late reg T: too many to attribute merely to running with low oil levels. Seems only to affect cars built from April 1997 with DHY (not DHX) serial number engines.\"

Exactly what we were faced with on Monday morning from the engine bay of a T registered 306 Turbo Diesel.
The pictures speak for themselves. Only way out is another engine.

The dealer was very tight-lipped about what the problem was but they did ask "Have you been driving through water?" AFAIK the car is still running well so one can surmise that the replacement engine has stronger rods.
Good quality rods are forged from vanadium steel. The Vanadium powder usually comes from Russia in wooden barrels. Skilful alloying and forging can produce rods that have an extremely low failure rate....
How do I get my grey plastic bumpers back to black again? I need to sell the car and they look tatty. My Dad has used 'back to black' type stuff and it wears off really quickly...
Thanks

saved a bit, but no much. plus i trust my own repair work more than others.
I've just bought a peugeot 106 series 1 ('94). I bought it from an auction - so no handbooks. The radio needs a code, which i incorrectly guessed. On a previous peugeot i owned pressing the 'm' button reset it but doesn't seem to work in this case. The radio seems to be the original peugeot. I'm prepared to keep guessing if i can reset it. Any ideas?
cheers

A brand new Car CD Radio will cost you £49.99 from Argos. A little more expensive than finding the code for your existing radio, but it takes minutes to install, and you'll have a brand new CD/Radio for your money.
My megane is starting to make a droning noise when im driving. It constant with speed. e.g. When i go faster it gets louder. I\'ve tried pressing the clutch in and taking it out of gear and the noise stays the exact same. Anyone any ideas what this could be? It seems to come from the back of the car. Read more
Definately sound like the rear wheel bearing. It could of been a number of things if it was comong from the front of the vehicle, ie diff bearings etc..
Peugeot 307 110bhp turbo-diesel, 2 years & 13,000 miles. Following its first major service it intermittently stinks badly of diesel in the cabin, most consistently after running normally a while from cold, until it's at least half-warm, then pulling up at a junction. Fumes clear on moving off. May recur at later junctions, but less.
Garage says 'no fuel system leak' and the exhaust is OK. I suspect an unburnt fuel build up somewhere on the inlet side of the engine which then blows back. I don't think its fuming all the time and I just pick it up in the cabin when I stop.
But why?!
Any clues anyone?

ECU controls vapour release into inlet manifold from canister..Ie when engine temp is what ecu sees as being correct temp/revs. will then release..Though cannot see that affecting what you mention..Wonder if their is a prob with seals on doors/tailgate..Just a thought?

Hi,
thanks all
I insured both cars with elephant.
A good tip re swapping NCD1 with NCD year on year.
Third party is only about £20 cheaper than comp for my cars.
If the car was written off, granted it would not be worth claiming on my insurance wot with the excess and loss of NCD.
Comp also has free windscreen cover TPFT does not.
A few years ago I had an 11 year old Montego - the fuel in the tank was work more than the car. I got a quote for Third party only - it was double my fully comp quote.
Thanks
Paul
