A rash decision to carry on through a light as it changed and the car with a another family member driving was caught on camera. Since I had just bought the car and not processed the transfer the summons first went to the previous owner. He forwarded my name as required and some 3 weeks later I got the summons. My name is spelt wrongly, address is correct and car registration. Any chance we can wriggle out of it on the name mistake?
Cheers

The temperature/coolant level warning light is permanently illuminated on the dash of My VW, even when starting from cold.
The coolant levels are ok and all the cooling electrical systems, fan and themoswitches are working correctly.
Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this?
Cheers

There'd be one less fiesta owner in wigan tonight.
I'm happy to acknowledge i'm not in the best frame of mind - today, work has been (supply own adjectives). It was chucking it down with rain when I left work two hours late, by which time it is impossible to see the key to lock the gate, which is necessary to stop the carpark being frequented by prostitutes and drug users
It would have been nice to have a clean run home
but Spurs are playing at Bolton tonight, so there's a bit of traffic about
and the dual carriage way outside the Reebok is currently down to one lane in each direction, just to slow things down
and there's a bus broken down on the roundabout at one end of that road, just to grind things to a total halt
Once past the A6, there is usually very little traffic to impede my progress, but step forward FiestaWoman, whose speed over 3 or 4 miles of almost empty 40 and 30 mph road ranged from 25 to 18 mph. Laugh when she brakes for minor bends in the road ! Gasp when she slows down for on coming traffic! Applaud the way she braked for the green traffic lights.
Then shoot her when the pedestrian crossing changes from green 70 yards ahead, she's doing 25 mph and she just sails straight through it without even touching the brakes
What was going on ? she obviously saw the things she slowed down for, but she chose to ignore the pedestrian crossing and the kids waiting to cross the road - will I ever understand ?

There is no requirement to have a medical at any age, but when you reach seventy you must fill in a form declaring any impairments which might effect your driving. They will take your word on this, so thats all right then!
The test was first introduced in 1935, but many there are many like my ex father-in-law who obtained a motorcycle licence when on war service and this covered him for a car as well. Not sure if this was just under the emergency powers act or it applied to all tests up to a certain time.
Before 1970 anyone who passed on an automatic could also drive a manual, so there are probably a few of those still about on the roads today.
I was give the IAM Skill for Life pack as a present a while ago and have been on a number of observed runs. So far it has been well worth it and I am ironing out bad habits picked up from eight years of driving. I would certainly recommend it to anyone else.
However, while most of their suggestions seem fine, what are other BackRoomers thoughts on these two that I'm not sure about:
1. No eye contact with anyone except motorcyclists, with whom you should always try to make eye contact with.
The biker bit seems sensible, acknowledging you have seen them. I disagree with the other part though. For example, letting other people in or being let in yourself is much easier with eye contact.
2. Gears in neutral at traffic lights.
Ok for an automatic compared to park - I don't like the reversing lights of the car in front to come on when queued. Since being taught to drive, I have always put it in first to be ready to pull away at the right time. Only the last observer said I should do this and a benefit is that it wears out the clutch less. Is that true? I keep the pedal to the floor, not at biting point. Could it be the other way around as putting it in neutral means an extra up-down of the pedal?

My regular driving instructor, an ex-police driver told me to leave the car in first gear, foot on the clutch, handbrake on when I was first in the queue at the lights. If I wasn't first, he told me to go into neutral.
In my opinion, this gives the best of both worlds. You can get away from the lights without having to reach for first gear, but giving the drivers behind plenty of time to engage first. Also, if you get shunted from behind, there's no car in front, so no harm in staying in gear.
Starting IAM in a few weeks, so maybe my view will change.
Has anyone got an ignition wiring diagram for a Daewoo Nexia 1500 8v. I know it is in the Autodata volume 6 book but that is one i have not got.
This is a non starter ,with no output from the coil.I suspect it is the module in the distributor but would like to know input and output data for this unit.

"The owner had put on a new cap and guess what, did not realise that the leads had to go in the correct place on the cap"
That's a classic chuckle that is.! ...
I have full access to Auctionview and am using it as a possible source of a car for my daughter (having previously successfully bought 4 cars at auction).
Could someone who knows please explain the (sometimes vast) difference between the CAP and Glass's guide, and advise which is usually nearer the actual selling price? Or is it somewhere in between?
For instance, check current Leon's for sale - in many cases the Glass's CLN trade price is as much as nearly £1k over the top CAP price, which seems a huge difference. The figure to trust is, I suppose, the BCA sample - but that isn't always present. Read more
When I was trading repo'd cars I found that Glass's was always somewhat optimistic and CAP nearer the mark.
Hi, apart from the 'red eye', how can you tell if a passat TDi for instance is really a 110, and they havent just stuck a different badge on bootlid? The reason i ask, is I've tried getting some insurance quotes for so called 110's for sale, but on entering reg.no the database shows them as 90's. Would the log book show whether they were 90 or 110?

I ought to have said the link was first posted here by dieselnut. But its a great help in understanding the turbo workings. Considering that all the exhaust gas passes through it I was surprised there was not more soot, especially as in the USA certain TDI's seem to have a problem with severe clogging of the inlet with some sort of sludge. Probably running them on chip fat!
After the talks with MG-Rover didn't work out Proton have done a deal with VW.

Lotus have just announced redundancies of up to 350 people in their none car production areas. Apart from admin areas that means a lot of people going from the R&D engineering side. What of future new Lotuses, what of future new Protons, what of the future?
Perhaps many will think that being taken over by Proton?s parent company originally wasn?t such a good thing now.
I received an information pack from Citroen today on the new C5. I am a bit disappointed to see that the new six speed auto box, that is in the V6, has not found its way into the 2.2HDI. It would benefit from at least a five speed box, as it is not happy below 50 mph in 4th gear. Read more
Why would the bearings be different just because of 16 inch
wheels, when the old Exclusive models had 16 inch wheels, as
you say?
What the dealer probably meant is that from now on all versions will have bearings straight from Exclusive models.
I'd be interested to hear others views / suggestions on this.
A group of local kids have somehow got their hands on a powered go-kart - quite a decent one by the looks of it. However, they have taken to driving it up and down the street and often further - on to the surrounding streets via a moderately busy road. Now, I'd be surprised if any of these are old enough to drive and certainly the majority of those driving it are nowhere near 17.
While I think it is a good thing they are being given the chance to try this sort of thing I'm not happy at all with them tearing around residential streets. Quite aside from anything else, they can't be insured so if they happen to hit anything they won't be covered.
Is there anything I can do, or should do? Aside from the noise I feel they are a danger to themselves and others the way they are going on. Quite how their parents can happily watch them screaming around I don't know - they really should be finding a quiet carpark somewhere for them to drive around. Read more
