I received an information pack from Citroen today on the new C5. I am a bit disappointed to see that the new six speed auto box, that is in the V6, has not found its way into the 2.2HDI. It would benefit from at least a five speed box, as it is not happy below 50 mph in 4th gear.

I heard the above mentioned 6-speed auto box (which also comes with the V6 in Pug 407) isn't that good after all. Made by Aisin in Japan, somehow doesn't receive those 'ah' and 'ohs' that ZF normally does with ease. However, it may act completely different in a diesel, I guess.
In the meantime I'm still struggling - get an old-shape C5 with 30% discount or wait for a New one till January when it's finally available where I live. Damn, 30% is tempting, but I've been waiting for the New Look C5 for ages.
BTW: I drive a 2-year old Corolla 1.6 Sol - hard suspension, noisy engine and mediocre crafting - I expected better. Now I want something really smooth. I hope I won't be dissapointed.

Saw one on the M40 yesterday. Looks quite a lot better.
|
Is there a 2.2 petrol engine available ? My friend has got it in his 407 and it's super smooth & refined thanks to its second-something (or twin-something, sorry I don't know how to spell it in English). Some even say it's as smooth as a 3.0 V6.
I wonder if any Back-Roomers here actually had a chance to drive the New Look C5 ?

Being a bit sad I had a look at the Citroen site and priced up the new shape version of my old shape - 2.2 auto exclusive se estate, a garage demonstrator that cost me well under £20k.
The new one has the same engine and auto box so basically only the bonnet is different. To cut a long story short by the time I had finished adding in all the options to bring it up to the old SE spec. the price came to a whopping £26,000 - seems a lot for a new grill.
|
The really sad thing is that the discounts now being offered on the new model are peanuts really, and are going to affect sales of it significantly, particularly as dealers are now offering the old model with massive discounts.

And a rear wiper that now comes as standard. And a knee airbag. And improved handling. And lower noise inside the cabin. And... many more.
|
I'm sure the estate has always had a rear wiper, the knee air bags are new, the old exclusive se has H3+ suspension & ESP traction control so the improved ride is probably only the result of a software upgrade.
The cost of the other improvements must be more than covered by the old standard equipment which now comes only as options ie. leather heated electric seats, sunroof, sat nav, etc.

Hmm... So maybe I should get one with a discount when it's still available rather than wait for the New Look model...

In a year's time the discounts will be on the new one as well, but it'd be foolish to offer them while there's still stock of the old one to shift... or we'd probably still be watching out for them on a 56 plate!
|
Vincentus - It's a very tough call. Also my comments only apply to the old 2.2 HDI auto exclusive estate with the SE pack, as this is the only model that keeps the same engine and gearbox and the estate body hasn't changed that much.
Another thing to consider - and this is a personal thing - IMHO the new estate looks a bit wuzzie compared to the old one which has quite an aggressive presence but that's all in the eye of the beholder.
I am very happy with my exclusive se estate which I bought as a 6 month old garage demonstrator for circa £18k - I would not even consider paying £26k for the comparable new one.

They did similar with the Xantia when the C5 came out. You could buy a new 1.8 petrol xantia for around £7995 IIRC. Not bad for a new family hatch.
I was a little tempted myself, but I had the older one then.

Is the New Look C5 actually really this better that a Citroen-fan-like-me could resist a 30% discount for the old model ?
|
Vincentus - I would go for a top of the range old model and if you shop around the discount could be closer to 50% than 30%.

My friend (C5 owner) told me he had to get used to C5's suspension... being comfy - he says - it makes some noise, whereas Mondeos, Vectras, Avensis & all else are harder, but less noisy when it comes to road road etc. Wonder why they just don't put more sound deadeners inside, that should certainly do the trick ?

They have added more soundproofing to new models!
|
The noise issue applied to the early C5s, before they did the suspension mods to the rear suspension. Even though ours had been subject to all of the recalls that the C5 was plagued with in the early days, it was left with the original axle beam. Consequently, there was still what I would call a rumble generated by the rear suspension. When the rear axle beam was replaced, to deal with the problem of uneven tyre wear, this rumble disappeared.

I've just been told that since they all come with 16" wheels now (and before the facelift only Exclusive got them) - subsequently all the bearings are different, resulting, so the dealer said, in even more smooth ride, even though the tyres have been changed to low profile 215/55 R16 in ALL models. Hhhhmm, that remains to be seen I guess till the first test drive.
|
I wouldn't call them really low profile. We have the same tyres on our C5 and they don't look like low profile tyres to be honest. The biggest difference will be made my the make of tyre and the Michelin Pilot Premacy that they are fitted with give a very quiet comfortable ride.
Why would the bearings be different just because of 16 inch wheels, when the old Exclusive models had 16 inch wheels, as you say?

What the dealer probably meant is that from now on all versions will have bearings straight from Exclusive models.
