I need one of these but I don't know what the identification marks should be for this engine. Can anyone help please. Cheers. Read more
Yes, I can see the unionised Germany heading the same way
as the Unionised Britain of the 70s... Sorry for you, there
are people prepared to work for less, just that they live
on the other side of the world.
I don't understand all this talk about 'unionised' - unions haven't got much to do with it. Neither has China in this particular case. I can only describe a lot of what appears in the UK press (and no doubt in other Western countries) as 'propaganda'.
I have been to China, specifically to look at the automotive component supply sector. It is bedevilled by problems. In some cases there are terrible infrastructural problems (intermittant supply of water and electricity, for example). Chinese companies will often not honour contracts (if their costs unexpectedly rise they simply tear up the contract!). The extent of pollution in the industrialised corridor stretching out from Shanghai has to be seen to be believed. There is little freedom and staff are often hired for a month and then not paid.
Much of the profit being generated in China is actually repatriated to companies in the West.
My prediction is that the Chinese economy will go 'pop' in the not too distant future (many of the Chinese managers we spoke to are expecting it to) and then there could be large-scale civil disturbance.
For all but the middle and upper classes (still a tiny percentage of the population) industrialised China is a pretty miserable place to live.
I say thank God for the EU imposing all of those environmental standards on us and thank God for unions who've helped most of us enjoy a standard of living that the average Chinese person can only dream about.
The 'globalised economy' only works because transnational companies are able to exploit the big differences in living standards between different parts of the world. They manufacture at developing world cost and sell and first-world prices - its not difficult to make a profit when you adopt that approach (i.e the approach Dyson has taken). The snag comes when your customers in the first world can no longer afford to buy you products or your costs turn out to be higher than you expected and the quality of the product is poor (e.g. the Rover 'Indicar' debacle).

Thats true- i have not long bought a 02 plate Leon 20vt Cupra in mettalic blue with history and 55k miles for 6600. It needed two tyres and an air-con regas though, but i still think its cheaper and drives better than the equivalent golf.
I am lookingto buy a new car and have no PX hindering me, I have been tempted by the spec on the new nissan including Sat Nav, Colour rear park camera, climate, etc.
Does anyone have any comments on Primeras in general, I have read that they depreciate very quick. Read more
Amboy,
have you purchased yet?
As a result of reading your ( & other) comments over the last few weeks I had a drive of the 2005 model 2.2 Dci SE today and I went with the intenion of hating it as its so pug ugly so that I could discount it but I think it's a brilliant package and unbeatable if I can get it down to circa £12K.
Have you (or anyone else) found a good deal as a trahet price at least?
Anyone used one of these companies that will remove/spray chips and scratches by just touching up the affected area?
I've got a long but shallow scrach on my passenger door (pesky kids!), and I'm thinking of using a company called Chips Away. They gurantee exact colour match, and can remove it without the need to spray the whole door.
I've got metallic paint too, so presumably this makes it more difficult?
Should I give it a whirl? Read more
I have used my local guy and he did a very good job on mine. Fot small dents and scratches to bumpers I think they are OK.
That said , I had a look at my neighbours car which the same guy repaired not long before mine and noticed rust appearing in an area of wheel arch that he was supposed to have fixed.
I also have concerns about them spraying your car on the drive or outside - on a wet day they have a tent to cover the car but a windy day sees spray paint going all over the place.
I would contact your local guy and ask to see some previous cars that he has repaired.
My Peugeot 405 has the irratic idling problem, so when you are sitting in traffic it stalls/ idles roughly. There is also a strong smell of petrol in the mornings but a mechanic can find no problems.
Any suggestions? Read more
Hello all.
Could you please give me information on how to fix the dropped drivers side door on my brothers scirocco. It?s dropped and can let in water!
A ?how to? or a few pointers or even a good VW/scirocco site would be cool. Is it just a case of loosening the hinge bolts and realigning? What gap should be around the door?
Any help you could give would be greatly received.
Many thanks
-tom

I think the doors sag because of their weight. The 'A' post actually deforms a bit over time.
Firstly, see if their is any play in the hinges by opening the door and 'lifting' it. Any play will be felt. It there is play then replace the pins (cheap).
Other than that you can adjust using the bolts, plus adding packing, if necessary.
I buy privately and am a bit green at my friends and neighbours shining new company cars.
I was thinking about a PCP contract to buy say a Honda Accord diesel.
I don't really care about not owning the car.
Has anyone bought on a PCP and regretted it? Are the OK? Read more
This may by now be a little bit out of date and it's possibly not done to quote your own posts but www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=19...9 is a fairly thorough explanation of how PCPs work and how they make money for the dealer quite nicely, thank you.
There is a website address in one of the threads which gives an alternative "normal" phone number to the 0845 and 0870 numbers.
I can't locate it at the moment, can anyone put it up again. Read more
At a time when telephone companies are promoting tariffs with all
inclusive calls, they are also promoting the use of NGNs(Non Geographic
Numbers)which are not included in the inclusive tariff.
This practice really is bordering on the outrageous.
Feel I got my own back today - had to call O2 and used the 0800 number on the aforementioned website rather than the 0870 number. I got through after 20 mins only to be told I had to be transferred to another dept which had a 30 min wait. The operator was quite surprised I agreed. I just put the phone on hands-free and carried on working 'till they answered.
I'm in the market for a new family sized car. I have a maximum of 14k to play with including roughly 2.5k for my trade in. I'm not too concerned over badges, my main criteria are size (4 doors +) and comfort. Also I only do about 12k miles per year so I don't think diesel is required.
Does anyone know any cracking deals anywhere that might suit me? Read more
And I suppose if you fancy a lot of change from your 14K, and you find the Citroen Berlingo comfortable (it is certainly spacious), that might be an option.
After my rubbish reply earlier on, all I can offer is the following which might be a little more helpful
I have both the Haynes Cortina 1.6/1.8/2.0 and the Sierra 4Cyl Manuals.
There is no mention of the GT so I assume it is a MK 3.
I do not recall a Mk 4 GT
However
Sierra only lists various electronic systems.
