I am lookingto buy a new car and have no PX hindering me, I have been tempted by the spec on the new nissan including Sat Nav, Colour rear park camera, climate, etc.
Does anyone have any comments on Primeras in general, I have read that they depreciate very quick.
|
They have a very good spec but in my opinion they look awful.
If you do buy one make sure you get a BIG discount and yes they do depreciate heavily.
|
Not many cars do depreciate faster. perhaps buy one thats 6 months old? Apparently the 2litre petrol engine is particularly thirsty, but at least theyre something different!
|
hmmm, so its true. I was looking atthe 2.2 diesel pre registered with delivery miles, list price of £16750. Now wondering what a good discount would be??

amboy, look in Road Tests. HJ has done a review.

I'm sure the ape that designed it couldn't spell primeval! ;-)

If you do decide to buy used model make sure you choose 2.2 dCi engine, not the old school 2.2 Di. Due to dealer registration tactics there are plenty of 2.2 Di Primeras on 2003 plates on forecourts. Di engine is noisy and rough compared to Renaults dCi...

Had one on test for three days last year. I wanted to like it sooooo much becuase of all the toys it came with.
I ended up hating it with a passion. including the toys. Slow thirsty, rubbish ride, uninvolving drive, and leaving the house and seeing those hideous looks. The whole car made me paranoid
< shudder >

And I love mine! My 04 DCi Se is one of the best new cars I have owned. The Dci is NOT Renault's. It does 48 mpg. Goes like stink and not one thing has gone wrong with it in 12900 miles. So it looks a little different and the depreciation isn't great (but no worse than a new Vectra or Laguna). I bought mine for £12950 new last March inc 17" alloys and metallic. I will run the car for 3 years and 50,000 miles and I know I'll find someone to buy it. My last car a BMW 330D lost £12,000 in two years, had to have a new gearbox and always pulled to the left. Dont knock it - ask an owner!

i used to sell new 2.2 dci SE 5dr hatchs for £13k and they still had bit of money in them - you should be able to get one for similar money, if not less.

I'm sure it is. Micra uses Clio's 1.5 dCi and Primera's got Laguna's 2.2 dCi. On continent Almera is also available with 1.5 dCi (in UK 2.2 dCi is the only option) and Primera range has additional 120BHP 1.9 dCi engine.

"and I know I'll find someone to buy it."
Dont bank on it, its been a sales disaster.

If you've got about £16k to play with I cannot think of a better largeish diesel than the Mondeo ST TDCi from a broker for £16.5k.
You've got 155bhp, mountains of torque, reasonably good styling, Recaro leather seats, attractive alloys, climate control, cruise control, CD changer, everything you could ever want. It's a £21000 car that can be yours for £16500.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any better suggestions for a £16.5k diesel becuase brand new, I can't think of a better buy.

Primera's depreciation far far far worse than a BMW 330D's, or any BMW for thaqt matter, however good they are, the depreciation isnt good, and nobody can argue with that!

As a percentage, yes. As total £££ lost, maybe not.

The 54 plate is supposed to have been improved vastly ??? The new spec car had added extras and. It is the 2.2DCI I am looking at, list price of £16750, Showrooms are asking for daft money and a broker is offering me a pre reg with del milege for £12200.
How does that sound, (is that considered a good discount)
Also if anyone knows of a good broker etc.
I apreciate all your help, this is a great site.

Wearing very dark glasses after a serious night on the town, may be! ;-)

Honestly the Primera 2.2 DCi is Nissan's not Renault's. The two engines are different. This was dealt with months ago on this forum. A well specified modern diesel with 50,000 miles will alawys sell -particularly with group 8 insurance!

Hi,
Well I smoke a 2.2SVE DCi as a company car which I had since Nov 1st 2003. I have just covered 36000 miles.
I have been very happy with it. Plenty of power, around 42 MPG which is not great but I am a rep so it does not get an easy life. If I do a gentle drive between towns I can get 48mpg.
Its confortable and I feel it drives and handles well. Its no BMW or sports car but is quite adequate.
It has a very large boot and is roomy and is well equiped. The satnav, rear camera are excellent! Nissan also has a good reputiation for reliability (Unlike Renault and many european manufactures) so see that as a plus point. What Car Warrantee direct survey rate Nissan 8th out of 26th)and Renault are 20th out of 26th!) Mazda came top followed by Toyota and Honda. Bottom (26th) was Landrover, followed by Jaguar, then Saab and then Alfa Romeo which was supprising!
I personally would not buy one new as you could get a 6-12 month old one and save so much money. They do depreciate heavily. As a second hand buy I would recomend it.
Try one!
Cheers
Jlo

Lot of talk about Nissan depreciation here, but it needs to be taken in context. Few buyers will ever pay anything like the Nissan list price.
I bought my wife a Primera 2.0i GT in 1998. IIRC the list price at that time was something like £16k. I rang around most of the Nissan dealers in the UK and found one in the colour she wanted at a dealer about 150 miles away with a price of just £9k (after some telephone haggling) - it was a 'pre-reg' but still a new car. I didn't get a tax disc, a tank full of petrol or a bunch of flowers left of the back seat (LOL!) but it turned out to be a great buy.
I guess now its worth around £2.5-3k, so its cost me about 6k depreciation over 6 years, which isn't bad at all. A typical "low depreciation" BMW or Merc will lose that in the first year.
|
Ah But Aprilia, that was the unexiting looking and boring but none the less much loved and mainstream car.
The new primera is so hideous looking that its had a restyle barely two years out of the box, and the dealers still cant give the things away.
|
I disagree that its hideous. 'Different' maybe, but I think I could live with one.

You are quite right. There is too much talk about how little a BMW depreciates without considering that a lot of other cars cost far less to buy than the rrp, which is not true of a BMW. Over the course of a few years a lot more money will be lost on a BMW.
|
I agree! Depreciation is an issue whichever car you buy new and then seek to move on after a few years. As was mentioned earlier, the Primera will depreciate by the roughly the same amount as a BMW, but, because of its higher initial cost price, the BMW will be worth a higher percentage of its asking price.
Regarding other posts, I find the Primera styling quite appealing, and seriously considered this car (before opting for the Mondeo TDCi). The major thing that put me off was load space: tiny in the hatch, and not much better in the estate. It seemed that they took the estate down the BMW lifestyle approach rather than developing serious space for lugging things around. I don't know why car manufacturers do that! The old Primera estate seemed cavernous by comparison.

The BMW will be worth more after a few years, it is true, but if it cost £20K to buy, compared with £12k, or less, for something like a Primera, the overall loss over the years will be much greater than on the Primera. After all, a BMW that is 10 years old is not going to be worth a great deal.
|
I have now had a test drive in the car and am now close to buying, I appreciate the depreciaition factor being the biggest reason not to buy buy I am hoping to get a pre reg 54 plate with big discount, being new to this I am a little weary about using a broker type outfit, I am also wondering whatthe best price is for a 54 plate 2.2 SE DCI ?
|
The main thing to consider when using a broker (except for the price!) is who you pay the money to.
It is much safer to pay your money to the dealer directly and have the contract with them - paying and dealing with the broker introduces 3rd party contracts and more potential for things going wrong.
|
Amboy,
have you purchased yet?
As a result of reading your ( & other) comments over the last few weeks I had a drive of the 2005 model 2.2 Dci SE today and I went with the intenion of hating it as its so pug ugly so that I could discount it but I think it's a brilliant package and unbeatable if I can get it down to circa £12K.
Have you (or anyone else) found a good deal as a trahet price at least?
