0845 & 0870 Alternatives

0845 & 0870 Alternatives - BrianW
There is a website address in one of the threads which gives an alternative "normal" phone number to the 0845 and 0870 numbers.
I can't locate it at the moment, can anyone put it up again.

In today's 'You and Yours' they carried quite a lengthy stinging feature on the "scam" of companies using 0870 & 0845 numbers.

Quite refreshingly, they also admitted the BBC use of them.

To keep it on a motoring theme you should read the discussions in that forum about the reasons DVLC at Swansea use to justify their 8 pence a min 0870 tel numbers.

It is not appreciated by many people that firms - including many in the motoring trade - get a cut from each call to the 0870/0845 numbers - apparently up to 4p per min. Therefore they have a financial interest in presenting you with unnecessary multi-choice menus and 'Greensleeves'. The longer they keep you hanging on the more money they make.

At a time when telephone companies are promoting tariffs with all inclusive calls, they are also promoting the use of NGNs(Non Geographic Numbers)which are not included in the inclusive tariff.

This practice really is bordering on the outrageous.

Feel I got my own back today - had to call O2 and used the 0800 number on the aforementioned website rather than the 0870 number. I got through after 20 mins only to be told I had to be transferred to another dept which had a 30 min wait. The operator was quite surprised I agreed. I just put the phone on hands-free and carried on working 'till they answered.
