Hello,

This is my first post. I've been lurking for a while though and there is a lot of good discussion on here!

Has anyone ever done business with this company? They seem to offer really good prices, however I am having an absolute nightmare waiting for my car from them. Does anyone know anything about them that I should be aware of?

Cheers. Read more

www.thesmartclub.co.uk - do a forum search for Virgin cars.

I'm sorry but I tried a few variations of Virgin cars on their search tool and nothing showed up. Can you be more specific, even just cut and paste a few posts will do.

Just witnessed an accident in the car park at the supermarket (I did the good citizen role and acted as a formal witness).

The question is whose fault would it be?

A road leads onto the car park. There are no giveway markings. I think Car A (on the road into the car park) was driving too fast. The accident was basically side of Car A driving into side of Car B (Which was already in the car park).

so, whose fault? Read more

I guess the question is, if there are no road markings is it a 50-50 fault?

Its a hard scene to describe, but fortunately there wasn't a huge amount of damage, a new bumper & front fog light for one car, and the other car wouldn't need to be repaired (old C reg Japanese 'sports' car, possibly an old toyota)

Mark - you've hit it spot on, these claims are never resolved.

I'm still waiting for the insurance company to resolve a claim after an accident I had in a company car last December (New Years Eve). Still, I've left the company now and they've not charged me anything, so I'm not fussed!!!!

Hi,

My Diesel Mondeo (1998, 96,864 miles, regularly serviced, no previous history)has recently got sick. It now requires extra cranking to start whereas it used to start virtually as soon as the glow plug light went out. When the vehicle is at normal operating temperature the engine seems to hunt. This is noticeable at low rpm. At a steady 1500 rpm with the vehicle stationery and out of gear the rpm will randomly drop to 1250 and then back up to 1800 before going back to 1500. When driving at around this rpm you can feel the engine hunt when you apply a throttle change either upwards or downwards in speed. There is no obvious evidence of any smoke from the exhaust. The problem does not appear to be there at high rpm but this could be the higher frequncy masking the hunting effect. Can you offer any advice.

Many thanks

Hi Guys,

Further investigation at the weekend reveals the following:

The boost diaphragm is not split.

The idle solenoid is working.

The busbar and heaters are ok.

It idles ok.

It seems to run at high speed ok.

It missfires at around 1500 rpm and puts out white smoke with a hint of blue during the misfire. It feels as though the engine is about to stall occasionally when this happens. I have noticed that the anti-stall actuator seems to be working a lot, even when the misfire isnt happening and I am just moving the throttle lever.

I suspect the problem may be air in the system. I had the filter housing replaced about 18 months ago by Ford.

Any further suggestions?

Regards Chris

Am planning to fit a strut brace. It looks like a simple case of undoing few bolts, putting the brace on and bolting everything back. Is there something else that I am missing ? Read more

Aprilia

Yes. Just make sure it doesn't foul anything as the engine rocks back and forth under braking & acceleration. Don't overtighten the strut retaining nuts - 30ft lbs should be enough (or check in the 'shop manual).

Question Citroen AX
jimget

Where is thev fuse for the horn on a Citroen AX?

Clanger

If the car is 1991 or later the horn fuse is behind the panel on the right of the dash between the steering column recess and the door pillar. Its numbered 10 and should be a 20 amp fuse.

It's more likely to be the horn itself if it's stopped working.

The story goes that after Lotus did the ride and handling developement on a sporty Astra a few years ago for GM, the PR guys at GM didn't think it look very 'cool'. So for the press test sessions they had bigger diameter wheels fitted with different profile tyres and of cause the ride and handling was diabolical.

If you didn't know better you might imagine that some motor manufacturers even give their press cars special preparation before they are lent out for testing.

Can anyone tell me where in the north of England I can hire/rent winter tyres? I have to go to Norway (Newcastle -
Kristiansand) in December and am taking my car. I understand the law there dictates that cars have to be fitted with winter tyres after 1st November each year. I have had no luck finding anyone in the north that has even heard of renting such tyres. It's common practice in Norway - they remove existing tyres and store them until you return for them whilst you use the rented ones - the only problem is that it's expensive (£200 per
week!) and you have to do it on arrival (hence causing a delay).

Does anyone know anywhere in the north of England or in Norway that is cheaper (I have discovered Feltham tyres in Middlesex will do them for 2p per mile per car - but would prefer not to have to travel that far if possible)? Apparently an alternative is snow chains - but I have heard that these are noisy, ruin the road (if it has no snow), cause judder, are difficult to fit
and can damage ones' wheels.

Many thanks

On the inside, yes - we use it as a dog-gate.

The lights on the heater/blower switches on my Octavia have failed, and I presume it is a bulb that's gone.

Anybody know how to get at the back of the console to check ?

Anyone ever dealt with these people? I've got a cracking deal on a new car with them and just want to check them out. Comments/feedback welcome to a new user. Cheers, Noodle Read more

I bought a scenic from them for the wife. I was a little worried about buying a car over the internet so I visited them at Sheffield and looked at some cars and bought one. Now had it now a couple of weeks and no problems. They were very friendly and not pushy. Will do business agian with Motorprovider may be on a Golf for me but I understand may not have a batch for a couple of weeks.

Yesterday I picked up a 64AH Fiaam ( Pug and Cit OEM )_battery at a trade motor Factors as one of my cars battery is giving notice after 5 ½ years. I dropped it off in the garage and hooked it up for a gentle charge and left it. 1 hour later I checked the voltage with 1 amp trickle charge and it read 16.2 volts. What !! 16.2 volts. I changed meter and sure enough 16.2ish volts ( Analogue meter ). I took it off charge and it dropped to 15.5 and slowly, 10 mins, it dropped to 13.4 where it wanted to stay. So surface charge I thought, or may be over zealous electrolyte so I put a 5 amp load across it and left it for 1 hour. Measured voltage 12.65 volts. Another hour 12.58 volts. Disconnected the load 12.8 volts after 10 mins. Put it back on a very low charge and slowly it crept up to 15.5 volts and still rising. Now I’ve fitted, tested, built charges, and used lead acids for 40 years and I can honestly say that I have never seen a normal battery go to that voltage unless it has been faulty or old, both implying a high internal resistance. This battery is not typical of a high internal resistance as disconnecting it only allows it to fall to 15.5 then it very slowly falls to 13.4. It does appear that this may be a rather generous SG but I can not find my SG bulb to test it. Clearly taking the battery back is an option but if it is a SG thing then the whole patch will be like it. Has anyone else come across this new initial high voltage or is it really a duff battery. I purchased smaller Fiaam battery for another car 4 months ago and did exactly the same with that but it topped out at 14.6 volts and quickly fell to 12.8 volts. Regards Peter Read more

Peter D

Yes I know all that but it really was not my problem. If a battery that started the charge with only a couple of amps rises to 16.4 volts and a few milliamps then it ain't normal and I was not going to get into a massive discharge cycle. The stange thing was that is discharged well within spec in terms of current and voltage but rapidy turns itself into a resistor when recharged. However the new one passes all tests and if fine. Now I know why I always charge a new battery for a couple of hours prior to fitting. If I had not tested it I am not sure what would have been the result. ! Regards Peter
