I shall soon be starting a new job, and will commute by car - I currently commute by bus.SWMBO will need current car for family running around and I will buy a second car.

Current car is registered and insured in my name, SWMBO has no NCD as had had no inurance for years in her name.

My plan is to insure current car (Berlingo) in her name and insure commuting car in my name. Do I need to transfer ownership to her as well?

TIA

Thanks everyone, transferring ownership is one less chore. As far as swapping her for a car, I would need a car that can manage a house, a disabled 4 year old, a ten year old desparate to be a tenager and an 18 year old! Yet to find a car with those attributes.

Looking for a bit of advice before I buy back my 1990 GTi that I sold 4 years ago.

The car was sold when I went to university and regretted getting rid ever since. It had been in the family since new and only covered 49,000 miles.

The lady that bought it is now selling it and I think I may buy it to restore to original condition.

The mileage is now on 58,000 so has hardly been used. The wheel arches and sills have been replaced and there is very little rust on the car at all (less than when I sold it!!!) and has got 4 new tyres for the MoT last week.

The only problem is when I was looking over it, I checked the engine and there is a tiny bit of mayonnaise under the oil filler cap and the water expansion bottle was very low. I know it may be the headgasket but the short 1 mile journies that she does to work may have caused condensation in the engine.

Would it pass emmissions on the MOT if the headgasket had gone.

The cambelts are due to be replaced so dont mind tackling the headgasket, just need to know how much to offer for it (she is looking about £500 but open to offers).

Does anyone have any ideas as to whether its HGF and what should I sensibly offer her?? Read more

i have an oil leak off the crankshaft on my 1998 1.8T A6.
the audi garage said it would cost £343.
is there any short term measure i can do - like put a sealant on it? the leak is very small and the only reason i need to get it done is that it drips on the drive (its dripping onto the cover underneath the engine then eventually drips onto drive). audi said to keep an eye on the oil level and i have been and it only drips a spot a day so nothing major but as we have blocked pave drive then its making a mess.
id imagine i can get it done cheaper at a non-audi approved garage.
they also said that they would need to take the cambelt and tensioner off so to get to it so would be advised to get this done at the same time - total cost £513.

can anyone offer advice

Yes, I know how it is done, but its not easy to explain.

You take off the bumper
Remove the air intake pipe between the front panel and the air filter.
Remove the bolts holding the front panel (there are some at the top near the headlights and some at the bottom near the bottom of the radiator.
Dealers have 'guide tubes' that they insert through the front panel to support it whilst it is pulled forward - you'll have to improvise.
Once the the 'forward' position you refit the rear top panel bolts in the 'front' holes to keep it steady.

I am considering purchasing a CB250 and have heard that one of the regular forum members has a lot of knowledge of these bikes.
My questions are:
Where is the best place to get one from and what should I be expecting to pay for a fairly recent one?

What should I look out for when looking for one?

Which year CB250 is best for daily use?

Are the parts very cheap if they are patttern?

Can one purchase the big metal pipes around the bike and a screen for this bike so it would look like a heartbeat bike?

Please share any thoughts about the above, as I really am considering purchasing this great bike. Also, what fuel economy should I expect from one?
Many thanks in advance. Read more

"with the C77 being the 305cc version"

I remember that (in the late 60's) being considered highly desirable, possibly because learners were then limited to 250's. Those early twins were nice engines, though...

New Volvo advert shows the ground floor plan of a house with a plan view of the car in place of the living room,ie all the comfort of home in their car.Pity after spending money on ad.men they show a WC opening direct from the kitchen,a no no in any planners rule book.

I've been advised by my local independent garage that I need some new front shocks for my 1996 Megane 1.4. They can supply some Monroes at c.£60 each, with £85 for fitting - a total of around £200. ATS have offered to supply & fit some Gabriels at £125 including VAT all in (supply & fit) - obviously a more attractive option!

As the car is only likely to be with me for perhaps another year, having only bought the car for my son to learn to drive in, I'm reluctant to spend more than necessary. Does anyone have any experience of the Gabriels? Read more

They're fine. Primarily retailed by Partco IIRC

As my car was lacking power/hesitating acceleration & misfiring, I did an oil flush & spark plug change in my vauxhall, changing the oil from a mineral to a part synthetic 10W-40 Castrol Magnatec and the spark plugs from NGK to Bosch Super 4.

However, the problem still persists - I checked the spark plugs 2 weeks later & all were slightly sooty and one was oily.

I also added STP fuel injector to the petrol tank to clena out the fuel system.

Do u think I should do a compression test or could there be a problem with the choice of oil & spark plug?

I went to Vauxhall for a diagnostic check which was fine.

Please help.

Ticking noise, plus oiling up on one cylinder sounds to me like it's broken a piston ring. It might be possible to drop the sump and pull the offending piston out the bottom past the crank shaft - but you might sill be looking at an engine rebuild or replacement.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

My 2000 year S80 2.9 at idle first threatens to stall then piles the revs on. In addition I get an occasional dashboard message stating that an emissions service is required. I have checked the emissions and they are OK. Could the Lambda probe be faulty and is it easy to find and remove on the 2.9? Any other ideas gratefully received. Read more

Thank you, I should have said it occurs when the car has warmed up, traffic lights is a good example.

Good isn't it? I particularly like the one in bright yellow with the 'Big Daddy seats'.

I wonder how many miles british truckers do in a year?

Taking the current family transport into a dealership tomorrow for a part exchange valuation against a new XC90 I'm picking up on Friday.

Given the demand for these cars, no discount was expected or offered, although the salesaman did agree to PX the current car. He didn't view it at the time.
What would you offer for the following, on the basis that the dealer has no sales incentive whatsoever?

Saab 9000CSE, 1993, metallic green, fullish service history (mostly non Saab dealers), 161,000 miles. Small daughter has lovingly, but lightly, carved a 3" heart on the bonnet. A Corgi car minus the rubber tyres has made it's mark nearby. The other two children have ridden bicycles down the nearside of the vehicle over the years, cunningly disguised by touch up paint. A can of Neutrodol has, this very evening, disguised the accumulated effects of sick, sweat, ribena, yogurt, rotting fruit etc that have been experienced by the interior of the car over the last eleven years. Front foglight destroyed by SWMBO when a "low kerb hit the car". Oil weeping from seven points of the engine/gearbox.

Apart from that it's fine.

Remember, the dealer is under no pressure whatsover as he has a sale in the bag.

Your guess for PX value is?..........

P E, virtual pat on the back for the closest guess.

£500. I was honestly expecting 200-300.

Just shows what a few hours work on the appearance of a car can do, as it was described a 'clean' (in both the motor trade and literal senses of the word), and comment was passed that I'd clearly looked after it.

Some of these threads are very timely, as I made sure the remaining tax wasn't part of the deal.

This car has been part of the family for nine years, but off to auction week after next. Sad to see it go.
