Just had the timing belt on my 96 Golf 2.0 changed at 59K (VW main dealer). The technician came out of the workshop to tell me that the car's water pump was noisy but that it did not necessarily mean that it was about to fail. If I wanted the work done, I would have to book it in again. I'm a bit anxious that the pump might fail and cause other problems. Excuse my ignorance but can anyone tell me if a noisy water pump means that it is on it's way out ? Read more
Hi, I had a diesel leak on my 1.8td mondeo (1995). I found it to be the top of the stop solenoid that was leaking so I replaced the stop solenoid. Since then the engine will not start. It just constantly turns over without firing. It has got fuel in it and I know for sure the stop solenoid is working. I have tried testing it withou the plunger in the stop solenoid as well just to be certain. The pump itself was not disturbed, nor was anything else for that matter. I literally just took one solenoid out and put another in. One thing I noticed though was this engine does not have a 'primer pump'. Can I take it the engine is self priming? maybe this is the problem I am having??
Any help is gratefully appreciated. Read more
It will almost certainly have a priming pump. Find the fuel filter, I think its a small bulb on top of the filter housing on the Mondeo.
Who made the first proper automatic folding metal roof ?
When I say proper, I mean like in the Mercedes Benz SLK and (latest) SL, not like the automatic "targa" roofed Honda CRX of the early-mid nineties.
I vaguely recall seeing some American cars of the Fifties/Sixties that had folding roof sections which would be automatically stored in the boot....???
In recent years, MB seems to have been first with the SLK and secondly with the SL, though lately both the Pug 206CC and 307CC along with Renault's new Megane Cabrio have got in on the act.
What the definitive answer?
Chad.

Peugeot, surprisingly, with the 402 Eclipse of 1937.
Naturally they made a great play of this. In terms of 50s cars, apparently they made a 1958 Corvette prototype with one (although I only know about this through googling now) and there was also the 1959 Ford Galaxie Skyliner.
Just seen this lot on ebay to dispose of SWHMBO.

I'm not sure how they would post her for £12.00!

The item no longer exists so it is impossible for me to say with certainty, but I'm guessing that it wasn't motoring related and you hadn't *really* meant to post it here.
Has anyone here got a Touran or Golf with the factory fitted 6.5" colour GPS navigation system? I think it's the same system in each car.
I'm thinking of adding it as an option but I can find little or no information about it anywhere...
So, if there's anyone knowledgeable I'd be interested for some feedback.

I've got one in my Honda CRV - similar system - wouldnt do without it now. Having done 20K miles, its been invaluable. Its DVD based so its fairly fast - only quibble is searching for post codes - it only goes for the first 4 charactors ie RG27 2XX, rather then full post code and then house number.
Nice big screen, covers all of Europe - full marks.
I thought this was a minority activity. Try typing it into google. It's a whole industry! Looks like a pretty trivial diy job too. Certainly easy enough in many cases to knock a few thousand off before each service/MOT to make low miles look real.

I'm trying to buy a car and I wanted to get an idea how common a practice it is. I went around Cargiant yesterday and there were a lot of vehicles with very worn seats and lots of stonechips yet suspiciously low mileages. I conclude that the practice is almost endemic. So now I'm trying to find out which vehicles can't be easily clocked. Picassos are hard, apparently, due to multiplex wiring.
Nah, go on then, I thought I'd get 10 quid more for my knackered 1992 Volvo 440!
Another example of someone driving the wrong way on a motorway.
This occurred in the rush hour and a picture was captured on a phone camera and published in the Daily M**l today.
An amazing escape as the M way appeared to be busy and he was driving through between other vehicles.
How do they manage to get into this situation and then just plough on? Read more
Just the one? Last time I was on the M4
there were absolutely loads of cars going the wrong way -
and all of them were flashing ME!
If you hadn't been doing twice their speed, it would have been apparent that they were actually going in the same direction ...
BTW, a wee tip for future reference: if the flashing lights are blue, that has a special meaning ...

Hi
Opinons please on which would you choose. 99 Accord 2.0 exec or 98 Primera GT version.
Mine is that Accord very nice inside but has no torque below about 5000 rpm. Very quiet inside.
Primera not as nice inside but seems to handle very well.
Not sure about long term cost as so forth.
Anyone want to comment?
Thanks Read more
Repair costs for both these cars will
be steep. A 98 Primera GT will have had a
long hard life. My starter motor went over August bank
holiday, I was quoted £400 plus fitting for a new one
from local dealers :(
luckily my uncles in the trade, got one for £50 plus
fitting but
these types of problem are very rare.
to be fair to Nissan I doubt a new starter motor for, say, a GM Vectra would be much less. Best to buy a recon unit or have your old unit repaired.
Nissan parts are not cheap, but then neither are many other brands these days. Honda parts are more expensive than Nissan parts - that's been my experience, at least. I'm fortunate in being able to buy Nissan parts at just a little above trade, which actually makes them fairly reasonable.
A neighbour of mine got a parking ticket in Manchester City Centre on Saturday night, issued at 2347, and when she returned to her car at 0040, the car infront of hers was being lifted onto the back of a low loader, to be taken to the compound, so I guess that she was lucky she got back to her car when she did.
Can you believe that they would be out at that time removing cars from the streets? It wasn't that she was double parked or anything like that. The area in which it occured is metered on-street parking, and the metering stops at 1800 hours. She took this to mean that all parking restrictions were lifted, so parked in the only spot that was still available, which was marked out as being for disabled drivers.
So my question is, are disabled bays enforceable at all times, or only when the meters are in operation? Any thoughts?

disability is 24/7, so it wouldn't make much sense for disabled parking to be part-time
I went to Westbury the other night to try and buy a car. I bidded £325 prov on a 92 Polo. Paid the £200 deposit and waited for the office to get back to me. He wants £550 was the reply. I said no by which time a couple of other cars i may have been interested in had gone through. I then asked the office if there was any room for negotiation and was told the vendor/dealer wanted no less than £525, so i left it at that. I was a little annoyed that the auctioneer had made it a prov as obviously car was quite a way off the reserve. Is this normal practice or do you think the auctioneer recognised me as a private buyer and thought i might pay the full whack anyway? Interested to hear comments.
The selling costs at Westbury for this type of car are just over £40 for up to 3 times around. They put their catalogues on line and i notice that about 80% of the cars in the lower priced end of the sales appeared in the last three sales - obviously not selling previously. The car I bid on, I think was on its second appearence. Its listed for next week! Should just mention the car had years ticket , was the GT coupe model, 100k, looked very clean apart from very minor scrape Read more
Without diverting on to Bangernomics this is a very nice very well built quality little car. Now lets assume it sells for say £400, it will probably make another MOT so £200 a year plus maintenance for your motoring.
Lots and lots of similar examples as 10 year old+ car values just drop to the level of peanuts seemingly regardless of condition.
Go again next week and it should be yours...

Always fit a new O ring between the new pump and the block,I think from GSF it is included with the replacement pump. Happy DIYing.
