Looking to replace SWMBO's car so took a test drive in a 6 month old SEAT Leon SE 130 TDi. Did drive very well, powerful engine, enough space etc.

Price however was £13,600 from main dealer, which seems high given a new model is out early in the new year.

The question is I suppose - buy now, or the new model later? What sort of discount should I ask for on the current model about to be replaced ?

Anyone with experience of this particular model ?

Decisions decisions.

Thanks in anticipation.

Well - decided to save £3k and went for the 110 Tdi equivalent Leon - 6 months older and little real world difference in performance on the test drive.

Considering chipping for +30 bhp/lbsft in the future.

Again - anyone have experience of this upgrade and recommendations ?

Thanks for the advice. The relays didn't seem to be fully seated and the problem hasn't recurred in the 2 weeks since.

Bought a set of shoes and can't get the drums on, looks like I'll have to sand them down. Any quick method of doing this? Read more

Took the shoes back to supplier and asked to see another set, discovered that the problem shoes are about 2mm longer than the fresh set. So either wrong shoes in right box or a bad batch made by Nippon. Hoping I can fit second set tommorrow.
Thanks

Hi guys, a few questions about the beloved e36 coupe - I'm keen for one of these little puppies. I drive too fast as it is so I think the 320 is the ideal choice to keep my licence but still have that v6 feeling & sound! Do any of u have any experience or advice to share? I'm keen for leather seats. What should I pay etc, and what milage is realistic to expect?

Also, what exactly does the on board computer option do???

Looking 4ward to your responses soon!

Thanks Read more

I've enjoyed a 320 coupe for the past 5 years or so. It's now over 10 years old with nearly 100k miles and still runs as sweet as a nut.
It's the 24 valve with vanos variable valve timing which should be an improvement over the earlier motors.
Usual things are water pump impeller failure, weak viscous fan coupling, split rear shock bushes and front ball joint wear.
Fortunate for me all these were done in the first year or two under the BMW fantastic warranty.
Still the original exhaust and the battery lasted 10 years.
It's the 5 speed swithchable auto which is great in the London traffic and more economical on a long run than the manual due to the mechanical lock up in top and taller gearing.
Does about 30 mpg generally but nearer 40 on a long run.

There seem to be some 'good deals' on 54 pre-reg focus 1.6 zetec for roughly £10,200.
My question is should I go for
i) pre-reg for 10K
ii)53/04 for £8/9K
iii) Wait to see deal on 'new' focus at end of Dec.

Any thoughts?
Any one know any better Focus deals?
Many thanks Read more

not one of life's essentials, but...

I have seen in some vehicles, (ie Merc Vito) coat hangers that are attached to the back of the front seats.

Now I know that if (a) I had a merc vito and (b) was prepared to pay more than I normally would for a coat, I could probably get some from a Merc Dealer, but does anybody know if their is anybody selling a universal model ?

I've tried googling, and all I get is links to price comparison sites that can't actually find the product, or one reference to coat hangers for citroens....

Glad to hear that you are sorted...

I did not realise Blackburn was the coat hanger's equilevent of an Elephant's Graveyard.

I can imagine them staggering along the A666 and the M65, on their last legs, to their final resting place. What a sad thought!

When buying a car from a dealer, is it standard practice for them to demand the tax disc from the trade in vehicle? As I understood it, unless explicitly stated, the tax falls outside of any negotiations - you rarely get a valid tax disc in the car supplied so why should it be any different for the car being traded in? I've not had sight of the dealer's terms & conditions, nor the contract of sale - would I expect to find it there?

Someone I know traded in his old Metro (no MOT and probably not road legal)and the price given for it was an odd amount like £62.

He thought it was a good price as he considering scrapping the car anyway until I realized that the amount they were offering him was the amount that the tax disc was worth. When I told him that he took the disc when the salesman wasn't looking.

I've been agonising for a month now trying to work out what I need. Perhaps you lot can help me resolve some issues. My budget is anything upto about 6k. Up until now I've never spent more than 1k on a car, currently riding around on a just-working Volvo 440 that we got of a mate's mum for 1100 4 years ago. It's been fine, but now we have two kids (3 and 1y) and I want something different. Trouble is, I'm not sure what it is I need. More space would be nice, but we live in London so it's only justfied for the odd long trip, maybe once a month. Safety is the other main thing, I want a a vehicle to keep the babes from harm in case of an accident. And reliability. And costs.

So far I have "definitely" been about to buy (with reasons I haven't in brackets):

Citroen Picasso (unreliable?)
Mazda Premacy (NCAP 3*)
Renault Scenic (unreliable?)
Nissan Almera Tino (gut reaction, didn't like it when I met it)

Then I started questioning whether we need an MPV and it was:

Mazda 323 (safe? big enough?)
Honda Civic (too small?)
Nissan Almera (big enough?)
Volvo V40 (too long for London parking)

Currrently I'm thinking Focus Estate.

And by now, with the opinions of a hundred journos in my head I simply don't know what to get.

Please help, before the 440 finally bites it and... oh. Maybe we don't even need a car.

As you can tell, I don't know my own mind.

Cheers,

John

Is that a normal to negotiate a lower price from the list price when buying a used car from an authrosied dealer? They don't tell what the list price included, and I don't want to miss out. Help please? Read more

Hugo {P}

Depending on how old the used car is, don't be conned into paying more for a 1 or 2 year old used car than you can for a new car exactly the same spec.

A few useful approaches:

If the car you're looking at is nearly new, contact the main car brokers such as DrivetheDeal.com etc andget some decent guide prices for new. Remember you are looking at the OTR (On The Road) prices.

Use this as a guide for your used car - ie if the best new price is say £9995 and the garage is trying to sell you a used car for say £9495 that is 6 months old, you have some real barganing weight. Also work out the benefits of any interest free deals for new cars etc.

Remember, car manufacturers are so desparate to achieve their new registration figures, they will often create situations where you can get up to 30% discount on the list price. My new van with a list price of £14,400 plus VAT cost me £10,900 plus vat and I got 0% interest with 30% deposit. That's just under 25% discount.

If the car is say 4 or 5 years old then the best benchmark for a screen price is what that car would cost at other dealers and priveately.

Expect to pay more from a reputable or franchise dealer as you'll be getting warranty etc. Franchise dealers have used car warranties backed by the manufacturer eg Citroen have Hallmark used car warranties.

Look in the papers to see what similar cars are being advertised privately for, knock 10 to 15% off these and that's what the buyers may accept.

Now compare these figures with the screen price of the car you're interested in. Consider what discount you can get to bridge the gap then decide whether the difference (if any) is worth it. If it is buy the car, if not either try and haggle some more or walk away.

Honest John will no doubt improve on this. If he doesn't come by this thread then maybe an e mail to him for a bit of advice may be in order??
