I shall soon be starting a new job, and will commute by car - I currently commute by bus.SWMBO will need current car for family running around and I will buy a second car.

Current car is registered and insured in my name, SWMBO has no NCD as had had no inurance for years in her name.

My plan is to insure current car (Berlingo) in her name and insure commuting car in my name. Do I need to transfer ownership to her as well?

TIA

Owner and registered keeper are not the same thing.

Without getting into the semantics I believe that as long as you reside at the same address then it should not make any difference. For the purposes of the insurance company the car can belong to either of you irresepective of who is the registered keeper.

just done exactly this.

Sold my Volvo for a Hyundai for the wife. I have taken over her Honda. So I drive car registered to her and she drives car registered to me. I have informed the insurance broker of the change in the main driver and that is it. No issues at all.

Check the wording or the tick boxes on a web site. Some companies will ask 'do you own the vehicle'. Always answer with the truth.
This is where a phone application and/or broker will be the best bet - she may also get a good introductory discount.

Proposal usually asks a few questions to around ownership/keepership and who will be main user. "Wrong" answers open up supplementary questions to catch out parents insuring kid's cars. May also be payment issues in the event of a claim if the insured is not the owner. Spouses of similar age and risk are unlikely to encounter problems.

When my two offspring first acquired their own cars, I was the registered keeper (I had paid for them!) and insured both youngsters as the main drivers.

The insurance company had no quibble with the arrangement and, eventually, the offspring sensibly decided that building up their own NCD would be advantageous, even though somewhat expensive in the first two or three years because of their age.

Thanks everyone, transferring ownership is one less chore. As far as swapping her for a car, I would need a car that can manage a house, a disabled 4 year old, a ten year old desparate to be a tenager and an 18 year old! Yet to find a car with those attributes.
