There's always stuff on ebay that promise to do wonders for your car's performance and economy for little cost. A common one is a power boost 'chip' that claims to add upto 20bhp, but according to the feedback by customers is actually a standard resistor that you can buy from maplins etc. for 20 pence! Heres the link, there are loads though.

Has anybody used one of these "drive over wheel alignment gauges", and are they any good?

Anybody know if these centres can check alignment on a '98
E class Merc or do I have to take to the
dreaded dealer?
Thanks

Yes, they can do it. You need it done on a Supertracker, Bear, Sun or similar optical alignment system - clamps on each of the four wheels and should give you toe (F & R), camber and castor. I pay £15 at local ATS, sounds like you might have to pay up to £25 elsewhere, but ring around first and don't pay too much. Merc. dealer will probably charge you around £100.

I think I still might have one of the old Gunsons mats around somewhere - I might dig it out an play with it sometime.

I need to remove the inside trim panel from the offside front door, Pug 406 2.1TD. Mr Haynes says lever off the switch surround in the arm rest to remove the switches. It is the two switch layout with some sort of small tray which could be an ash tray or possibly for collar studs. I have tried levering off the surround which is separate from the tray but my nerve runs out when things start to bend. Am I missing something? Is this an area where there is much expertise or am I pioneer? Any advice would be welcome. Read more

The ECU needs to be read for fault codes by a coder reader......ring around a few independant workshops and see what they can do for you.

I have recently rebuilt my CVH head and am now in the position of of putting it back on the block. However when I originally removed it I didn't wait long enough for all the coolant to drain before complete removal (I know please no comments!) and now therefore have some coolant/water in the block.

There was some water in the one of the cylinders but I have removed this, what I am most concerned about is when you peer down the oil passages (I have drained the oil), in the block, water ,and a considerable amount at that, is evident.

My query is this: Is it really much of a problem or will it evapotate at operating temperature or can it be drained somehow.

Regards

CVH was never a prob.would suggest usual oil put in. any water will evaporate due to heat. and as its minimal I see no prob. Dont waste money on cheep oil. Then replace.

I own a Nissan Sylvia auto coupe (1985). I do not have a handbook for it.

All I need is the recommended tyre pressures but can not find them anywhere. I have even traced and downloaded a scanned copy of the original Nissan technical manual but it does not list tyre pressures! I know the torque settings for every nut on the car but not the **** tyre pressures!

Can anyone help me? Read more

29/29 seems definitive and perhaps more importantly seems fine on the car.

Thanks all.

As an aside, don\'t people with those bluetooth mobile phone headsets look Silly? Sort of thing Alan Partridge would wear, I\'d rather pull over and answer the phone myself and even if they only put them on to answer the call but they walk round with them on all day. Makes me laugh. Read more

I'm looking for a medium-size car for around £6k. Went to NetworkQ and found an Astra 2001 Y reg , 20000 miles on the clock, for £6k. I was told it's an ex-mobility car. The salesman claimed ex-mobility car is excellent - proper serviced (paid from our tax!), low mileage etc. Is there any downside? Will re-sale value lower at a later time? Any other recommendation for cars on the similar group? Thanks, Dumb. Read more

My father bought an ex-motability Nova some years ago it had done very few miles and required a dose of top end treatment and an Italian tune up as it had done on average 20 miles a week until it was sold. It was however in good nick and subsequently lasted with no problems.

I would guess the main thing to look for are holes in dash or trim where adaptions might have been made and of course some indication as to how the car was used.

I still recall an article in our local paper a couple of years ago where two local cabbies were found to be using moability cars obtained by reletives who were entitled to them with the speedos disconnected, oh dear...

as always

My 1994 Peugeot 306 xtdt has a problem with steering at slow speeds (ie parking)

When you go full lock to the left, upon trying to centre the steering there is sometimes a highly increased resistance. You then feel a pronounced knock and the steering returns to normal. Not sure if it's a problem with the power steering pump or the rack. It doesn't lose any power steering fluid and it doesn't happen evry time.

Any help appreciated. Read more

Changed the bearings today and the steering is now 100%. No knocks on the suspension any more either.

Thanks to everyone for their help/comments.

And I thought the Multipla was bad!

There's a new car in the car park here this week. I've been constantly amused by it, mainly because it's driver just can't park (educated at the "if I go forward and back enough times, the space will change shape to the angle I'm driving in at" school of parking) but also because it looks so odd!

It's half red, and half white and looks quite new. Looks like a Twingo from the front and a 2CV from the back, but kind of squared off. If you took a 2CV and adapted it to take a wheelchair it would probably look like this, but it's not adapted for wheelchairs, it just looks odd.

I have taken a photo of it (from a distance!) but can't upload it to the HJ MSN site for some reason. Can anyone suggest what it is before I have to look interested and wander around the back of it to see what it's badged as?

Thanks! Read more

How many Skoda Fabia vRS did you see Adski?

I really wanted one of those until I went for a look and found out that the driver's visor thing doesn't have a mirror in it, and the inside looks a bit 1997, but think of the fun I could have driving it past all those MINIs! ;)

I also emailed Skoda to find out what the facelift on the Fabia was going to be, and they replied to say they were changing the grill and lights to make all Fabias look more like the vRS. But I thought the whole point was that the vRS looked different. Ah well. Looking increasingly more like a Polo again for me!
