September 2004
I did a compression test in Feb this year 1.3 petrol engine.
cylinder no & respective pressure reading (bar)
1 --- 17
2 --- 8, 10, 12, 13
3 --- 15
4 --- 16
I just did another one yesterday:
1 --- 17
2 --- 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13
3 --- 14
4 --- 15
cylinders 1 , 3 & 4 the readings given are based on 2 tests and both tests came with approximately the same reading, and the pressure built up fairly quickly.
Cylinder 2 is strange, on both occasions it starts out low for the first test and with each subsequent test the pressure gradually increased. Each test has the engine turning over for roughly the same time, and the meter reset each time. So there was no "same result" as per the other 3 cylinders.
I don't understand why the pressure is different with each subsequent test. I didn't put any oil in as I figured there was no point because the pressure was increasing anyway (with subsequent tests).

Hi,
My Rover 220 Turbo (petrol), 1995, 66k miles, has just started making an unpleasant grinding noise when the power steering is put under load - e.g. dry steering. Would this be the first sign of a failing PAS pump?
If so, anyone know how hard the pump is to replace? Only just had the cambelt changed, irritatingly - presumably this will have to come off again.
If I just ignore it, what will happpen? If/when it eventually fails completely, will it be catastropic (broken timing belt or something) or will I just have no power steering? Any idea how long it might last? (I hate dealing with garages, and I'm a bit busy to do it at the moment...)
Thanks,

Hello,
I bought a new gasket from Ebay and repair it itself by the tutorial what were in the listing.
Try ebay for: "Rover power steering pump gasket"
Works perfect.
When I was younger, I can recall many occasions when I saw dogs chasing cars, in fact my Uncle lost a lovely collie to this very activity.
Granted, there were fewer car around in those days, but it occurs to me that I haven't seen a single dog in pursuit of a car for decades, never mind years.
Does it still happen, or has evolution removed this tendency from the canine population? Read more
Dogs chasing cars! I even overtook a Jag on the A38 the other day.

hi,
a friend of mine bought a 1.8 freelander a couple of years ago
and has been resonably happy with it,
the remote locking started playing up a couple of weeks ago and was proving very tricky to fix so while it was in there, and there was also the looming threat of the headgasket going on it, he thought sod it and bought an 01 v6 model,
THREE days later any guesses?? you guessed it head gasket went on the v6, the land rover main dealer arranged for it to be today away, and delivered an 04 plate 4 door model the following day,
this morning they couldnt get in it as the locks are playing up .
i have a few questions
1.
how long does a head gasket take to go? sure if it was only picked up on the tuesay and it went on the friday shouldnt the dealer have spotted it.? or is it instantaneous?
2.
can he legally walk a way and get his money back? and his old car or is he obliged to have this one when its repairrd,
3.
if he does decide to have it back is there any guarentee it wont go again and how long should l/rover guarentee their engine repairs for?
4.
i kow its a regular fault on ther 1.8s but has anybody heard it regualary on the 2.5 v6 2001??
i find it staggering that this happens in this day and age.

Hello,
I'm currently deciding what car to buy, and have narrowed my likes and dislikes down to either a 1.5SE Almera, or a 1.4SE Ibiza. My budget's £7-8k, and I need something that's reliable but worthy of motorway journeys as well as city driving.
I currently own a 7yr old Honda Civic, and a 2000 Fiat Punto. The former is wonderfully reliable, but expensive to insure for us (25 and 22), the latter is a bag of nails and we've had more problems than I care to list, but it's going after just over a year in our possession.
So, we're downsizing to one car between the two of us and the above two pretty much cover what we want.
Can anyone suggest any others to consider? Anything I should be wary of?
What would you choose?

OK Enough opinions!
Its time GirlyDriver goes to drive both of these cars and hopefully lets us know what she thought of both cars.

anyone used these before?
i dont completely understand their processes?
I'm off to France at the end of the month via the tunnel, for the first time.
My main question is re the Eurotunnel fare - they offer a "flexible short stay" at £193 and a "Club" ticket at £293. So far as I can tell, the only difference apart from free snacks & a newspaper (which don't bother me) are that the FSS is only valid on the train that I book, whereas the Club ticket seems to promise that I'll go on the next available departure.
As I have to use the M40, M25 and M27 to get to Folkestone, I'm a little wary about being locked into one departure time. The FSS suggests that you might be able to go on a later train "if there is availability".
Does anyone have useful experience of this? How busy are Eurotunnel? £100 extra seems a bit steep!
And, obviously, any suggestion as to how to negotiate France and the centre of Paris would be greatly appreciated! Read more
How on earth can it be worth the risk to do
an extra 20 - 30 mph here? All you do is
reach the next traffic jam a bit quicker.
Depends on the journey.
On the M25 in peak time, I would agree with you. But my daily drive is along the M40, which is usually quite clear. So the extra speed doesn't hurry me to the next jam more quickly, it gets me home to spend more time with the little patentlies before they go to bed.
Well worth it, IMHO.
Just hope someone here can settle a query of mine. I have seen several cars now with totally clear back lenses - many of the cars in our club have them fitted. However, I have just been told they are not road legal.
Could someone explain why they are not road legal and if not, why do they pass an MOT?
Thanks Read more
The lenses I am referring to are completely clear - there is no coloured glass whatsoever. You basically rely on the coloured bulbs inside. I have driven behind such vehicles and I must admit the back lights appear to be pink rather than red and are difficult to see in the daylight.
p.s. StuW - I probably was in one of those minis you saw in convoy on the M53, probably going to a show.

The cylinder walls or piston ring(s) are worn in cyl number 2. The more you spin the engine the more oil is distributed on the cylinder walls and hence makes a better seal.
