And I thought the Multipla was bad!
There's a new car in the car park here this week. I've been constantly amused by it, mainly because it's driver just can't park (educated at the "if I go forward and back enough times, the space will change shape to the angle I'm driving in at" school of parking) but also because it looks so odd!
It's half red, and half white and looks quite new. Looks like a Twingo from the front and a 2CV from the back, but kind of squared off. If you took a 2CV and adapted it to take a wheelchair it would probably look like this, but it's not adapted for wheelchairs, it just looks odd.
I have taken a photo of it (from a distance!) but can't upload it to the HJ MSN site for some reason. Can anyone suggest what it is before I have to look interested and wander around the back of it to see what it's badged as?
Thanks!

:p the multipla was not bad it was challenging!

If it's fairly small, it could be the new Fiat Panda. Other suggestions are Hyundai Amica, Suzuki Alto or Vauxhall Agila. NB I know someone who owns one of the latter. When I repeated the Top Gear description that it looked like a bottlebank, she was most insulted ;) It was sold a month later!

Perhaps it's a cut and shut - but the wrong cars were matched...

Stuart, that idea has potential. Take the back of PoloGirl's car, and the front of Patently's, and -- hey presto! -- a car with zero emissions.

And what's best, there is no way you can be prosecuted for speeding! (errr, unless you find a big hill)

Not a van is it, if it is it sounds like a Nissan S-Cargo (who thought the japs had no sense of humour!) Used for advertising quite a bit although I think officially never imported to the UK.

Jim I think you've got it!
I'll have a closer look tomorrow but I think it is an S-Cargo, although why anyone would want one that's half red and half cream is beyond me!
Thanks!

It's probably one of those new Smart cars, they got a new shape now.
|
Nissan S-Cargo (escargot - snail - geddit!!) The 2CV was the Tin Snail.
Built in early 1990s on Micra chassis as a marketing tool. They did the Figaro at the same time, a copy of a 1950s French coupe.
Both had 1.3 litre autos IIRC. Both imported privately only.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
The S-cargo has a 1.5 auto but the figaro has a 1.0 turbo.
There a load of other retro cars available for import from japan.

Thanks for sorting that little mystery - here's a photo (the car is bottom right).

Oh for an edit post option!
That link doesn't work, sorry!

>>That link doesn't work, sorry!>>
It does but I'm not moonpiggy nor do I have a password..:-)

I think it's working now. I forgot to make the album public.
Looking at the picture again though, I'm not sure if it *is* an S Cargo or not. Hmmm.
|
Yeah, looking at the 2 photos it is an S Cargo, compare the front side windows and the door handles, weird looking thing!
|
|
Looks somewhat familiar but can't place it.
Like the idea of having its own built-in lamp post for when its parked at night...
|
..but watch out for low bridges.....

I can now confirm that the car is not a cut and shut involving my pride & joy!

Apparently the team got distracted after a few drinks, but I'm sure they'll make their way soon to PatentlyVille. Current plan is to patch the rear of your car with the front of a Perodua Nipper, to create a 4WD budget supercar ...
|
Wouldn't work. Every fibre of the 911 wants to overtake a Perodua whenever one appears ahead, so the oversteer would be horrific.
|
Top marks to whoever designed it. Great looking vehicle, if I was after a van I would be seriously interested. I bet the guy who drives it is a considerate road user at peace with himself.
Cars and vans are like town centres nowdays, they all look alike. A bit more inspired originality would make the world a nicer place.

Don't worry, they've thought of that. They are going to alter the transmisions so that the forward gears send you backwards.
Since normal progress will be in reverse, the Porsche bit will be in front of the Nipper when you're on the open road
|
Set off .... wheee ... going well .... CRUNCH. Sorry mate, didn't see you. Seats face the other way, you see...
Is it about time we continued this in the silly thread?

Definitely a Nissan S-Cargo van built in the late 8o's by the yokahama company using nissan sunny parts. I think someone did an electric version of it too.
|
I always thought the S-cargo extremely neat, and not just because of the name. I love the big centre speedo, daft headlights and 1950's oval rear windows - how can anyone not be amused?

>>Definitely a Nissan S-Cargo van>>
I'd been searching for this under Nissan (plus Japanese) concept retro vans without any success.
However, here's one link to a blue, grey and white one:

Here's another (missed out on built-in street lamp though):
www.spmotor.co.uk/1901.htm
UK firm that specialises in bringing in unusual Japanese models such as the Figaro (named my first cat that name after seeing Pinnochio at the cinema) is:
www.autosupplyuk.com/nissan_figaro.html
The Figaro was apparently part of the "Pike" series of retro styled cars produced by Nissan between 1987 and 1991. The "Pike" series also included the Be-1, Pao, and S-Cargo van.
|
I have to say it's growing on me, which is worrying!
I definitely like the idea of replacing Polo with something a bit retro!
|
I've just realised....
A major car manufacturer must have seen the S-Cargo in the early 1990s and decided to adopt the basic shape; mods to stretch the front bodywork section to incorporate the headlamps, provide additional doors and more seats were adopted.
The concept went on its stand at the 1995(?) UK Motor Show to warm approval.
Voila!
Hail the Picasso.

it is called the scargo for a good reason - its likeness to a snail ?? (escargot - geddit ?)

Presumably the S-Cargo runs on Shell.
PoloGirl - will you soon be in a MINI and have to re-christen yourself?
Retro and fun sound like a good combination.

God no!!
MINIs scream of two things:
1. Everyone says these are cool so I'll buy one and it will make me trendy too. Trying way too hard!
or
2. Daddy bought me this.
The MINI will eventually go the same way as the new VW Beetle unfortunately has - really funky when it first came out, but now everyone has one.
Don't know what my next car will be, but I saw a really cool old, white Porsche yesterday! (Maybe when my no claims is up to the maximum!)
|
PG - you beat me to it!
I was sat in a carpark overlooking a road today for about an hour. I saw 3 different Minis. I only saw 2 Foci though. In all 3 cases, the Minis were driven by 3 young (reasoably attractive ;-) young girls with pink caps on.
As PG says, when it came out, great! Now I find I'm stuck behind a lot of them which gets annoying.

How many Skoda Fabia vRS did you see Adski?
I really wanted one of those until I went for a look and found out that the driver's visor thing doesn't have a mirror in it, and the inside looks a bit 1997, but think of the fun I could have driving it past all those MINIs! ;)
I also emailed Skoda to find out what the facelift on the Fabia was going to be, and they replied to say they were changing the grill and lights to make all Fabias look more like the vRS. But I thought the whole point was that the vRS looked different. Ah well. Looking increasingly more like a Polo again for me!
