Experiencing some problems with my 2001 VW Bora TDi 115bhp.

The traction control light stays on, no glow plug light, no fuel pump priming and engine turns over and won't start. When it did start I had "low oil pressure" alarm come on even though there is enough oil in the engine.

I have tried replacing relay "109" which I believe can cause problems but this has made no change.

The AA have plugged in their diagnostic software and there are no errors stored on the ECU. The AA man said he thinks it could be the fuel pump relay which is a multi functional relay which could explain all the other lights.

Before I take in to be looked at does anyone know the whereabouts of the fuel pump relay? Read more

Hi,

My brother has an 03 Megane which has an interesting fault - the boot opens when the doors are locked.

Basically, to repeat the problem you do the following:

1) Lock the doors using the remote
2) Press the boot release button 4-5 times in rapid succession
3) Bingo! The boot pops open.

It won't close until the car has been unlocked - as you can imagine, this is rather a serious flaw as it means the boot is no longer secure. The trick doesn't seem to work when the car has been deadlocked, however.

Megane dealer says they have never heard of the problem before - could another Megane owner try it out on their own car? I suspect it can be fixed with a software upgrade though, or failing that, I imagine the Daily Mail would pay for such a novel story!! Read more

Modern renaults have the central locking/imobilisor/"lots of other leccy functions" integrated into a central cpu. I suspect it may need to be changed. I suspect they might have a software fault (certainly sounds that way to me )

Hi,

My Passat has developed a droning noise as you go through the gears particully around 2000 rev. Once pasted this all is well have had wheel bearings checked & CV joints replaced along with roll bar links but still no joy. Anyone else has this prob? the only think I can think of is maybe exhaust resenance?

Thanks Read more

I think it will be exhaust resonance. When I had my 1.9 diesel Polo it did the same thing around 2,500 revs. I lived with it for 60,000 miles until the exhaust had to be replaced because it was blowing and then the noise seemed to be still there but a lot quieter...

hi,
i need some advice on bleeding the fuel system on the merc sprinter van, its a 1997 5cyl cdi model with an injection pump. i cant see the normal syhpon type pump you get on some cars for bleeding, so all suggestions most welcome Read more

thanks lads, its supposed to be a self bleeding system so no priming pump. other have mentioned a need for bleeding at times as mentioned by simon and number cruncher. but its turned out that my problem relates to the stop solenoid electrical circuit. its actually registering as earth?? as far as i know its supposed to be live with ignition on. by applying live to it does click. so any info on the electrical circuit of the stop solenoid would be greatly appreciated.

A member of my car club recently reported that they had received a fixed penalty notice for undersize number plate, whilst the car was sitting in a Tesco car park.

Can this be defended because the car was not actually on public roads?
This question could also apply to underbody neons, driving without seatbelts etc, well all manner of things really. All possibly defendable because "the cars part of a photoshoot for a magazine officer, honest"

Obviosusly this sort of thing has overtones of "croozing, innit mate" but I am strictly interested in the legal side of things, not the antisocial behavoiur side, which is a different offence. Read more

Sounds outrageous, almost corrupt, dare I say.
An appeal to the Secretary of State could swiftly reverse a refused application.

Well, maybe not "swiftly".

Just bought my first diesel. 130 TDI. Should it be stalling on me as I coast round corners in third or try to start in second or am I just a lazy petrol driver who should learn new tricks. Read more

Hear hear. I cringe when I see people starting off in second gear. (That said, the MB 123 with a 4-speed auto box only ever uses 1st gear if you use the kickdown.)

Hi,

Two problems with my 2002 VW Passat PD 130 Sport, which has completed 21,000 miles.

After a heavy downpour I've just noticed the carpets on the front passenger side are very wet and there is clearly a lot of water under the carpet. The problem seems worse on the left hand side of the footwell towards the front. Is this a common VW problem and any ideas where it gets in ......... and how to stop it???

Also I've noticed that if I acceletate briskly, usually 2nd gear to 3rd gear, then change gear while in the 1900 to 2500 rev range the car gives a jerk type reaction not too disimilar to an auto gearbox kicking down suddenly. Its almost as if the engine or turbo pauses for about a second before kicking in again then pulling away normally ..... this didn't happen for the first 18 months I had the car so I don't think its my driving! Any ideas??? is there a turbo problem developing???

I didn't spot that, I'm on holiday in USA, well that's my excuse anyway. Regards Peter

I'm finding the plip central locking on the Megane a waste of space - hardly "remote" if you have to be within two feet of the car. Is this, and the extremely short delay between unlocking & starting to stop the immobiliser cutting in, a "feature" of this car, or do I have a problem with the battery for the remote?? Read more

Fantastic bit of advice - has helped me solve my problem with Megane Scenic Plip.

I have a 97 Scenic and frequently irritated by the poor distance of the remote control and the need to lock and unlock having put all the kids into the car. Recently worked intermittently - seemingly temperature / weather related. And assumed it was a receiver fault.

Now knowing how to test to see that the plip is working have found a dry joint on the IR LED on the plip - a bit of solder and now all back in working order - now all I need to do is get a lift to where I left the broken down car earlier today!
Many thanks Dave!!

The thread on electrically operated doors has made me wonder whether there is a limit to the range of toys that can be provided for a car.

In theory, every additional toy that is fitted is something else that can go wrong. Thus, there is a trade-off, in that the car is made more desirable by the toy's presence but less desirable in that it may be less reliable and more expensive to repair.

Long ago when cars were basic, the addition of (say) a radio must have seemed unequivocally good in that the benefit was large, the risk small, and if it broke then you were no worse off. Now, the marginal benefit seems to be getting smaller, and the downside of failure might be worse - vide the electric doors (do they have a mechanical backup?).

Anyway, I wondered what toy the BR thought was most pointless, in that its benefit was minimal and the downside risk too great?

My vote is keyless entry systems. Frankly, the extra effort of having to press the plip button on the keyfob is not going to worry me, even in the rain. The risk of it not working and leaving my pride & joy unlocked or (worse!) resolutely locked would worry me more.

Any other suggestions? Read more

"windscreen washer fluid low signal is an irritating moving graphic"

Probably the same as on mine, which I initially interpreted as overheating! Much embarrassment at the Audi garage when their mechanic patiently explained that it wasn't a picture of steam coming out the top of a radiator...

Whoever was enquiring about SP2, and hopefully not installed it yet, should look at Ceefax p116 where problems are reported, including a long list of programs that don't run properly/at all.

What a surprise! Read more

If you go wireless hxj, make sure you spend a little time looking at security. If you are running XP on the machines it might be worth getting devices that support the WPA system over the older WE P system.

There are plenty of guides on the net that help explain the process and most of the manuals have sections on setting up encryption.

With wireless you always need more than lock on the door so don't forget about locking down access to only your devices - this will normally be descrived as MAC address filtering.

Once you've got wireless installed, you won't know how you lived without it.
