Hi,
My Passat has developed a droning noise as you go through the gears particully around 2000 rev. Once pasted this all is well have had wheel bearings checked & CV joints replaced along with roll bar links but still no joy. Anyone else has this prob? the only think I can think of is maybe exhaust resenance?
Thanks

How many cars do you drive exhibiting a droning noise?
|
Passat TDi Man,
I drive a 97 Passat TDi and have exactly the same, at about the same revs. It's more noticeable in 4th and 5th as the engine noise is less. 4th is at 40mph and 5th at 50mph.
I had my 'Dodgy Dave' (everyone has to have one!) look at it and he dismissed it as nothing to worry about.
I wouldn't worry about it - mines been doing it for at least 10k and nothing has fallen off, yet.
Cheers,
DB

Hi,
Thanks for that only had the car a month still getting used to all the strange noises this one just irritates thats all, by the way have you ever thought of having your TDI chipped?
Cheers

I did look at it, but I'm a bit dubious of longevity as it's just passed 143,000 miles. I wouldn't mind a bit more oomph though.
If you're looking for a decent company, try upsolute.com. Here's the details for the 110bhp Passat.
Original bhp 110 to bhp 143
Torque 173ft/lb to 214ft/lb
All for around £300.
They did my previous car, a 406, and Simon Coe (the sole distributor for the UK) was excellent.

Hi DB,
Thanks for the info and the link just spoke to Simon and booked car in to be done mine has done 120,000 but mileage is not a problem..... can't wait...glad I bought a road angel!!(Excellent piece of kit well worth the money)
Thanks again

Hi,
Please could you let me know how you go with your chip? I'm still umming and aahing over whether to get mine done and a first hand review could swing it for me!
Cheers,

Hi,
Does the noise stop if you dip the clutch?
number_cruncher
|
Hi,
Yes it does so I guess that rules out wheel bearings etc then but it does not do it when you are standing still clutch in or out only at around 40mph
Thanks
|
Hi,
Yes, that is where I was going with the clutch question. As you can't replicate the problem without being in motion, that makes finding the problem more difficult.
Although I don't know about Passats in any detail, on other cars, I have seen both exhausts and gear linkages giving resonant vibration problems at different speeds.
Does the noise vary if you grip the gear lever? If not, then that makes the gear linkage a less likely culprit. If the gear linkage is transmitting the noise - check the bushings and bearings, if they are ok, check to see if there have been any VW bulletins or mods on the linkage.
To check out your exhaust vibration idea, first check all of the mountings for security - if ok, consider changing the mounting arrangement in some way - stiffen or move the mountings. If that changes the noise, then you are onto something.
I know this won't help you,, but vibration problems are notoriously difficult to deal with. I have been involved in industrial projects where six figure sums are spent to develop and improve vibration isolation!

Hi number_cruncher,
Thanks for your help sounds more like the exhaust so in the end I think I will just have to accept it and turn up the radio! just wanted to make sure that it was nothing serious.
Thanks

Well I had this on my diesel Omega, it didn't do it when stood on the drive and revving to 2000rpm, but it did while driving, either passing 2000rpm, or (as it always seemed to do) the auto changed gear so it always seemed to be at or around 2000rpm, it was annoying as the car was lovely and quiet otherwise, after much burned hands, I found it was an insecure metal coolant pipe which ran down the length of the engine, the dealer had bent a bracket while the pipe was off to do some work, put it back on and found the hole no longer lined up, so left it to buzz. - idiots.

I have had the same problem on a 2002 tdi, it was the air intake ducting and was replaced under warranty, same problem occured again after 3 months as the joint is only a push fit, solved with a piece of cardboard wedged underneath the joint in the ducting. Hope this info helps.
|
Thanks thats great can you tell me exactly where to put the cardboard is it near the airflow meter under the bonnet?
Thanks
|
Where the air intake duct goes under the plastic cover(which is held in place with 2 screws which have snap on covers) and the duct changes direction from horizontal to vertical I placed a piece of cardboard which is a tight fit in the gap. Too thick and the plastic cover moves.
The original problem is caused because the joints in the plastic ducting are push fits but are too loose and the section from behind the radiator to the joint vibrates when the engine speed is between 1800 to 2200 rpm. I originally thought the problem was the sump protection panel vibrating as it was that noisy!
Hope the advice cures the problem.

I think it will be exhaust resonance. When I had my 1.9 diesel Polo it did the same thing around 2,500 revs. I lived with it for 60,000 miles until the exhaust had to be replaced because it was blowing and then the noise seemed to be still there but a lot quieter...
