This has proably been covered elsewhere but I just need to have a rant to get this off my chest!!
Was just driving from Edinbugh to Glasgow on M8 (2 laned motorway) and came across one lorry trying to overtake another. I am not lying if I tell you that the overtaking manoeuvre took exactly 3.5 miles to complete!!! The overtaking one was going a miniscule mph more than the other, they were obviously both on their speed limiters and the inside one would not let up to let the other one pull in.
Why do lorries do this? Surely drivers know that if they are in the slipstream of another lorry they will be able to go a bit faster than they will when they pull out to overtake it? Why does the driver on the inside not realise that there is a huge tailback of traffic and slow down for a split second to let him in? Why does the overtaking one not just give up?
To those that know the area, it started at Junction 4 Bathgate and finished at Junction 5 Shotts, including the hill coming up from the Services!!!
Why why why?
Sorry for rant guys, needed to get that off my chest, thanks for the therapy, just email me the shrink's bill! Read more
The position of the spare wheel on 4X4/SUVs generally seems to be;
a. on the tailgate - Honda CRV, LR Discovery, Toyota LC Colorado, Isuzu Trooper, Mitsu Shogun etc.
b. under the rear - Range Rover, Toyota LC Amazon, Nissan Patrol etc.
However, UK spec Amazons/Patrols have their spare under the rear, but imported ones have them on the tailgate. What's the (manufacturers) reasoning behind this?
Chad.
PS. Yes, before all you Landies start shouting - I do know that you have the choice of mounting the spare in various places on a proper Land Rover.
PPS. I really don't want this thread to go down the "I hate SUVs/What is the point of SUVs" route, thanks. Read more
Often to do with Type Approval, the rear lights have to be seen at different angles and with the door open. That is why early Discos,Shoguns,Vitaras and Troopers have the 'add on' lights in the rear bumper.
Apololgies if this has common ground with a recent thread on a similar subject. This is a quick post without spending time to find the first, and merge the two.
I understand that where I live, what is being called a 'vehicle amnesty' will be running later this year. Residents who report the first 100 vehicles can have old and unwanted cars, caravans and motorbikes collected and disposed of completely free of charge.
At the moment, £62.50 is the normal fee to dispose of a vehicle that has come to the end of its life, but the article I just read said that new legislation being introduced over the next two years will increase disposal costs to £350.
Flippin' eck! Three Hundred and Fifty Quid, to get rid of a ratty old banger worth tuppence ha'penny even if going to the trouble of sellining all the components individually, which most people can't be bothered with.

but there are at least two people in Hull now offering to collect scrap cars for free who stop on the way home, remove the sellable bits and leave the rest at the side of the road??
Can anyone tell me how to disable the 2 stage remote unlocking? The handbook says \'your dealer can do this.\' I asked my dealer, and they had never heard of it? I have looked at the \'mirez website\' and tried the Mondeo instructions\' but they don’t work with the 1999 focus. Appreciate any help. Read more
Goes something like this...
Unlock then hold down - lock and unlock - on the remote for approx. 4 seconds (indicators will flash).
Works to both enable and disable (i think)
Hope this helps
SWMBO has a new Avensis Verso, and has reversed into a small bollard already. Apart from the repair cost this is good as it allows me to have a minor prang in the future. As for solutions I am aware of reversing sensors and the Fresnel stick-on-lens. She would prefer a mirror. We have occasionally seen apparently good quality mirrors attached to the rear roof and even one extending from the factory rails to cover the back of the car. The dealers and accessory shops around here claim no knowledge of such things.
Does anyone know where we can get a decent tailgate mirror for a MPV? Do they interfere much with the tailgate lifting up? Read more
Reversing sensors? check on here for a recent thread for some good ones priced at approx 50 quid
I want to service my fiat but having trouble locating the spark plugs!!. any ideas? Read more
Follow the plug leads to their ends?
I briefly read an advert for a scooter and saw that it had both its front and rear brakes connected (not sure whether to the foot or hand operated "pedal"). It got we wondering why motor bikes have separate brakes for front and rear?
(You may guess that I am not a biker!) Read more
I have linked brakes on my Honda STX 1300,and like Bill they are undoubtably the best brakes that I've ever had on a bike. Apart from their stopping power, the fact that some back brake effort is applied when applying the front brake, the bike squats rather than dives (at the front end). But as it also has ABS and I think that this is the saviour of the system when braking on frosty/snowy roads. It certainly worked for me earlier this year on frost and incidently is a far superior ABS than my BMW 1150 GS.

I\'m told by the company that fitted 2 new front tyres on a citroen saxo that it was not possible to check & adjust the tracking as the necessary tools are not available. The only method is to visit a citroen dealer and have the tracking checked and adjusted, whilst paying main dealer rates!
Contacted another tyre company and told a similiar story.
So you clever chaps, whats the truth? whats different about little saxos? what special tools are required just to get the wheels straight ?
(Moved from Discussion.) DD. Read more
Nah, they're having you on.
I got my 98 Saxo tracked at a couple of places, neither of which were main dealer. They didn't use specialist tools, other than the ones required to do the job.
Then again, they could just have been pretending!
My student daughter runs a 1.1 pop plus to get to college etc. Its the H.C.S.engine weber carb model; and following a fuel leak which was causing uneven running, a problem still persists only at low revs. All the service items have been done and a local ford dealer has set up the mixture [replacing the screw] The breathing function is O.K and they are unable or unwilling to find a cure. I can only describe the tickover as lumpy, and not consistent. It has a manual choke, and cuts out sometimes [hot or cold] when stopping for traffic.
Any ideas to help us keep our sanity?

My 1.3 HCS fell out with me on the idling front a couple of months back. I was stuck in traffic for 45mins going VERY slowly in hot weather. Basically about 20 minutes into the jam the car misfired more and more until it stalled. I'd then restart it, only for it to start misfiring again until it stalled again! The best thing I could do was keep the engine off until I needed to move, the gap between restarts helped it!
Replaced the HT leads, but haven't been in a situation like that since to get the symptoms again. It just seemed very odd and out of character.

My car has started to occassionally stutter/misfire. It is definietely getting worse and is now stalling. It always restarts and gets going again no problem. The problem seems to be worse when the fuel level is say 30% or less in the tank but this could be a red herring. I suspect the EEC engine management system - is there any way I can perform basic diagnostics without going to the dealer? I thought that, as it seems to be related to the fuel tank level, that it might be fuel pump related or maybe even air getting into the system. I know this car does suffer from sticking valves if the wrong oil is used, but I have been careful to use the correct oil.
Any ideas?
Thanks. Read more
Thanks for the reply. Since then I have noticed that the car is nt developing the same power as before. It is definitely hesitant. I have experienced something like this with a 206 diesel and this was diagnosed as an air flow sensor problem. I'll get the HT system checked as well as the air supply
Encountered this the other day on the A38 between Newton Abbot and Exeter, just before Holden Hill and before the A38 runs into the M5. Just before the hill, there is a rather twisty (Well, twisty for a dual carriageway) section which climbs a hill. Just as we entered the section, at 60mph, a truck lunges out from behind another and begins his overtaking manouvure. Up this twisting hill. We one stage, we were doing 25mph, in the outside lane of a dual carriageway.
Fantastic.
