Hi All,
the key fobs for my peugeot for my 306 go through batteries too fast. The problem just started happening to my main set and my spare set at the same time. I\'ve seen other people have the same problems, but not seen a solution except buying a new set from Peugeot for £70.
I\'ve checked the circuit board and it takes 70uA when doing nothing, goes up to 7mA for a few seconds when the key is pressed, falls back to 200uA while the key is still pressed and then back to 70uA when released.
The capacity of a CR2025 battery is 170mAh which gives approximately 100days at 70uA and about 35 days at 200uA if the key is getting stuck. I would guess my PCB is taking too much current.
Does anyone know what the faulty component might be or what the circuit schematic is and I might be able to track down the problem.

Ta very much,

Kind of linked to the thread on the "Now you see him, now you see him" road safety ad that has been running recently, i'd just like to point out another road safety ad inaccuracy that really really annoys me.

Whilst generally i think the vast majority of road safety ad's are brilliantly done and hard hitting (especially the seatbelt ones btw), there is one concerning the importance of sticking to the 30 limit that has a glaring error in it.

"If the car had been travelling at 30mph, it would have stopped...here." Just before the car ploughs into a small child.

HOWEVER

All through the length of the ad, the car has its brakes locked!

When skidding, the car has very little stopping power, and so im sure if the car WAS travelling at 30(or less) and had braked in the manner shown, it would also have hit the child!

Surely the producers shouldn't have used a car with locked wheels to demonstrate this, even if it does look more exciting on tv. If that is how the majority of accidents occur, the ad should have been explaining that for cars without ABS keeping the brake pedal floored whilst skidding is NOT the most efficient way of stopping! It's very difficult to disagree with the vast majority of sentiments
in these posts but surely the point is that they had
a 30 second ad to get a simple message across -
that braking distance (generally) increases with speed and a pedestrian stands
more chance of not being hit/killed if you are travelling more
slowly.

The point is that the message is confused and neither interpretation sensibly promotes safety.
Even the choice of 30 and 35 mph
may just be convenient - the speed is irrelevant - in
this case 20 is "safer" than 25, 40 "safer" than 45
etc in that you are more likely to stop in a
given time at the lower speed than the higher.

By reductio ad absurdum, that argument leads to 0mph being the safest speed. I know you aren't advocating that and I know the ad isn't advocating that.

If the numbers are not chosen purely for convenience, then the significance of 30mph as a speed limit is being dangerously overstated since 30 may well be too fast in a busy high street.

The seatbelt ad and the "don't drink and drive then overtake a cyclist without looking for oncoming traffic" ad are short and hard-hitting without suffering from this sort of flawed reasoning.
Question flooding
John MLA

Hi readers,

My Rover 214 cabrio was at the Rover agents in malta for a minor defect. We had a bad storm resulting in their basement garage getting flooded and my car bogged down upto the roof.
The rover dealers insist that they can get the car back in shape but although I am not a tech. person, common sense tells me that the electrics and electronics will give me problems even after a few months, What about the immob, electric roofs, boxed chassis, well basically all electrics, not to mention the upholstery.
I will haver an appointment with them on Monday and i'd like to have some background. It's a real pity, the car was registered in 1998 and is in mint shape or should I say was....... The insurance has already indicated that I'll lose alot due to current value. So, i'd like to keep options open.
thanks a lot

As the damage is so serious it is a write off.water get`s everywhere and anywhere apart from what has been said.would take a garage better than them to sort out.has to be a write off

Any idea of a website where I can look up the dimensions of any given car? (Doesn't seem to list this info in the car-by-car info).

Thanks,

Don't forget there is no uniformity about whether the width includes mirrors - some do, some don't.

I have a 98 2.0 Nissan Primera which seems to be using a lot of oil. I has gone from max on the dipstick to min in just under 2000 miles. I average about 500 miles of mainly motorway driving a week. The car has a Nissan Approved warranty and when they looked at it they said they could find nothing obvious and filled it up and told me to check it after a 1000 miles.
It dropped slightly after a 1000 miles but seems to have plummetted in the next 1000.

I have checked the obvious things myself - no visible leaks, spark plugs look OK, air filter fairly clean. The only thing I can see is black dry soot on the inside of the tailpipe- I don't know how significant it is - my wife's Clio is less than 6 months old and it has soot inside the tailpipe as well.

When I first spoke to the dealer - they said it was unheard of for Nissans to use this much oil. The only other thing is that after I bought the car - I discovered a receipt for a head gasket replacement in the documentation (My fault for not checking thoroughly enough). I am wondering if the overheating damaged or scored the cylinders which is now causing the oil loss. Does this sound reasonable ?

Run out of ideas

My 1999 VW Sharan 110 bhp TDi (red i) has a misfire ('coughs' on acceleration). So far I have replaced/had tested the airmass meter; new injectors; new fuel filter; new battery; have had dismantled and tested the diesel fuel pump and as a last resort changed the fuel provider and used a fuel additive (the last being a suggestion of Honest John's).

I am loathe to part with the car as it goes well otherwise - is there anything left for me to try or will I be coughing all the way to the dealer via the bank for a replacement? Read more

hi i would have a real time test on the air flow meter with a vag 1551/1552 or equivelent as these kind of faults are usually very had to replecate in the workshop. try check for any loose hoses in the engine bay. also check ecu under scuttle hasnt got wet.

My Vectra (1997 'P' GLS Saloon) has a misfire which is most noticeable at about 1200-1500 RPM and I think is also higher in the rev range too. This car has been to a tuning centre where It was diagnosed that the HT leads were breaking down, these have been replaced as were the plugs and it still has the same miss-fire.
Taking advise from others I have just fitted a new Bosch DIS pack and the problem is still there.

Has anyone had previous experience of this & how to resolve?

I'm not sure if this is relevant but the rear exhaust manifold is cracked and blowing slightly, do you know of anyone who would be interested in replacing it (I live in Eastcote W.London)?

Thanks in advance

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)

Hi Mike, I think the cracked manifold is most significant as an air leak here will allow oxygen into the manifold and upset the response from the O2 (lambda) sensor for that bank. A professional quality diagnostic tool will be able to read the live data from all of the sensors and allow a comparison between the front and rear (Banks 1 + 2). In any case fix the leak!

Just bought an Ibiza GTI, has no book pack. Wanted to know if the timing belt has been done as the car is a 98R with 72k. Do seat have a central servicing database like VW do? Also where could I get a note of what should be done at each service I would guess the haynes manual for the car. Read more

Can you contact the previous owner, to see if they know about the cambelt change? No idea about the database, but a call to your local Seat dealer would probably provide the answer.

Before I begin, let it be known that I am *not* a motorcycle-hating lunatic and it is not my intention to enrage or provoke anyone or say anything negative about motorcyclists, I am simply asking a question and would like people's views on it. So here goes..

I'm sure you've all seen the advert about looking out for motorbikes ("Now you see him, now you see him...", etc) but my question is this:

I've watched the advert several times and as far as I can see, the accident was entirely the fault of the motorcyclist, not the driver. It appears the bike rider didn't see that the car was turning right and drove straight into the side of it. But the driver of the car indicated his intention to turn right in plenty of time, so surely it is the responsibility of the motorcyclist to notice this and slow down (i.e. not drive into the car). Yet the advert is aimed at car drivers and the message is to watch out for motorbikes... am I missing something? Read more

spottydog

What happens in this advert is exactly what happened to my partner (but luckily he wasn't hurt too seriously).

He was filtering past a line of stationary traffic when a woman decided to do a 3 point turn in the road. She pulled out without looking or indicating when he was very close to her and him and his bike ended up doing a superman impression over her car until being stopped by a shop window. Her first comment was I didn't see him, his reply was you didn't look either!

As money is always a problem for this site, and has been discussed to death, how about some ideas for items you would be prepared to buy? I for one would buy a car sticker with "Meet me in the Backroom" or some such double entendre on it. Or a mug with a mugshot of HJ on it. Any others? Read more

I do appreciate the thinking behind this, and its the kind of suggestions we are always ready to hear;

But please can we keep such discussions/thoughts to e-mail.
